Volcano Activity You’ll need: Paper Plate, Small cup, tape, foil, baking soda, water, vinegar 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Tape the cup to the plate by rolling a piece of tape onto the bottom of the cup and sticking it on the plate. Cover the plate/cup structure with aluminum foil. Poke a hole in the foil at the center and cut strips out to the circumference of the cup. Fold the foil down and tape it to the inside of the cup. Pour 2 T of water into the cup and stir in 1 T baking soda. Stir it until it dissolves. Measure 2 T of vinegar into a separate cup. Pour the vinegar into the baking soda and water solution and observe your “lava” bubbling up. Carbon Dioxide is a gas that forms when the vinegar reacts with the baking soda. The gas builds up and causes the solution to bubble up and over the cup. This is similar to a volcano. Sometimes a gases build up inside a volcano and cause it to explode violently. Other times the lava of an erupting volcano oozes over the sides slowly intead.
