HYMNS: 371, 401, 236
The Bible
Ps. 71:1, 2
In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion. Deliver
me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me,
and save me.
Prov. 6:1-3
My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a
stranger, Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with
the words of thy mouth. Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou
art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy
friend.
Isa. 50:4, 5, 7 (to :)
The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know
how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning
by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned. …The Lord God
hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.
…For the Lord God will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded:
Gen. 13:1, 2, 5-7 (to :), 8-10 (to 3rd ,), 11, 12 (to 2nd ,), 14, 15
And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and
Lot with him, into the south. And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and
in gold.
And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents. And
the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their
substance was great, so that they could not dwell together. And there was a
strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s
cattle: … And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee,
between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we
be brethren. Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee,
from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou
depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left. And Lot lifted up his eyes,
and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where,…
Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they
separated themselves the one from the other. Abram dwelled in the land of
Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain,
And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up
now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and
southward, and eastward, and westward: For all the land which thou seest,
to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.
Prov. 15:1, 2, 18, 21, 23
A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. The
tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth
out foolishness. …A wrathful man stirreth up strife: but he that is slow to
anger appeaseth strife. …Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom: but a
man of understanding walketh uprightly. … A man hath joy by the answer of
his mouth: and a word spoken in due season, how good is it!
Prov. 10:11 (to :), 12, 13 (to :)
The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: … Hatred stirreth up strifes:
but love covereth all sins. In the lips of him that hath understanding wisdom
is found:
Prov. 11:1, 3 (to :)
A false balance is abomination to the Lord: but a just weight is his delight. …
The integrity of the upright shall guide them:
Mark 1:14 Jesus
Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,
Mark 5:1-4, 6-15 (to :)
And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the
Gadarenes. And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met
him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, Who had his dwelling
among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains: Because
that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had
been plucked asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces: neither
could any man tame him. … But when he saw Jesus afar off, he ran and
worshipped him, And cried with a loud voice, and said, What have I to do
with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God? I adjure thee by God, that
thou torment me not. For he said unto him, Come out of the man, thou
unclean spirit. And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered,
saying, My name is Legion: for we are many. And he besought him much
that he would not send them away out of the country. Now there was there
nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils
besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them.
And forthwith Jesus gave them leave. And the unclean spirits went out, and
entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into
the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea. And
they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And
they went out to see what it was that was done. And they come to Jesus,
and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting,
and clothed, and in his right mind:
Ps. 64:1, 10
Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the
enemy. …The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and shall trust in him; and
all the upright in heart shall glory.
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy
SH 444:27
Immortals, or God’s children in divine Science, are one harmonious family;
but mortals, or the “children of men” in material sense, are discordant and
ofttimes false brethren.
SH 122:1-7
The evidence of the physical senses often reverses the real Science of being,
and so creates a reign of discord, — assigning seeming power to sin,
sickness, and death; but the great facts of Life, rightly understood, defeat
this triad of errors, contradict their false witnesses, and reveal the kingdom
of heaven, — the actual reign of harmony on earth.
SH 58:5
Ill-arranged notes produce discord. Tones of the human mind may be
different, but they should be concordant in order to blend properly.
Unselfish ambition, noble life-motives, and purity, — these constituents of
thought, mingling, constitute individually and collectively true happiness,
strength, and permanence.
SH 60:24
An ill-attuned ear calls discord harmony, not appreciating concord. So
physical sense, not discerning the true happiness of being, places it on a
false basis. Science will correct the discord, and teach us life’s sweeter
harmonies.
SH 213:24
Mental melodies and strains of sweetest music supersede conscious sound.
Music is the rhythm of head and heart. Mortal mind is the harp of many
strings, discoursing either discord or harmony according as the hand, which
sweeps over it, is human or divine.
SH 541:16
The erroneous belief that life, substance, and intelligence can be material
ruptures the life and brotherhood of man at the very outset.
SH 335:25 Mind
Mind is the divine Principle, Love, and can produce nothing unlike the
eternal Father-Mother, God. Reality is spiritual, harmonious, immutable,
immortal, divine, eternal. Nothing unspiritual can be real, harmonious, or
eternal. Sin, sickness, and mortality are the suppositional antipodes of Spirit,
and must be contradictions of reality.
SH 356:7 (only, to 2nd .)
Discord can never establish the facts of harmony.
SH 368:1-5
The greatest wrong is but a supposititious opposite of the highest right. The
confidence inspired by Science lies in the fact that Truth is real and error is
unreal. Error is a coward before Truth.
SH 276:12-28
The realization that all inharmony is unreal brings objects and thoughts into
human view in their true light, and presents them as beautiful and immortal.
Harmony in man is as real and immortal as in music. Discord is unreal and
mortal.
If God is admitted to be the only Mind and Life, there ceases to be any
opportunity for sin and death. When we learn in Science how to be perfect
even as our Father in heaven is perfect, thought is turned into new and
healthy channels, — towards the contemplation of things immortal and away
from materiality to the Principle of the universe, including harmonious man.
Material beliefs and spiritual understanding never mingle. The latter
destroys the former. Discord is the nothingness named error. Harmony is the
somethingness named Truth.
SH 452:14-15
Never breathe an immoral atmosphere, unless in the attempt to purify it.
SH 453:6-8
Right and wrong, truth and error, will be at strife in the minds of students,
until victory rests on the side of invincible truth.
SH 186:17-24
Evil is self-assertive. It says: “I am a real entity, overmastering good.” This
falsehood should strip evil of all pretensions. The only power of evil is to
destroy itself. It can never destroy one iota of good. Every attempt of evil to
destroy good is a failure, and only aids in peremptorily punishing the evildoer. If we concede the same reality to discord as to harmony, discord has
as lasting a claim upon us as has harmony.
SH 390:4-9, 12-18
We cannot deny that Life is self-sustained, and we should never deny the
everlasting harmony of Soul, simply because, to the mortal senses, there is
seeming discord. It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which
produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores
harmony.
When the first symptoms of disease appear, dispute the testimony of the
material senses with divine Science. Let your higher sense of justice destroy
the false process of mortal opinions which you name law, and then you will
not be confined to a sick-room nor laid upon a bed of suffering in payment
of the last farthing, the last penalty demanded by error.
SH 493:17-24
Mind must be found superior to all the beliefs of the five corporeal senses,
and able to destroy all ills. Sickness is a belief, which must be annihilated by
the divine Mind. Disease is an experience of so-called mortal mind. It is fear
made manifest on the body. Christian Science takes away this physical sense
of discord, just as it removes any other sense of moral or mental inharmony.
SH 563:1-2
Human sense may well marvel at discord, while, to a diviner sense, harmony
is the real and discord the unreal.
SH 400:26
The action of so-called mortal mind must be destroyed by the divine Mind to
bring out the harmony of being. Without divine control there is discord,
manifest as sin, sickness, and death.
SH 304:16-17, 19, 28
Harmony is produced by its Principle, is controlled by it and abides with it. …
Truth is not contaminated by error. Harmony in man is as beautiful as in
music, and discord is unnatural, unreal.
Controlled by belief, instead of understanding, music is, must be, imperfectly
expressed. So man, not understanding the Science of being, — thrusting
aside his divine Principle as incomprehensible, — is abandoned to
conjectures, left in the hands of ignorance, placed at the disposal of illusions,
subjected to material sense which is discord. A discontented, discordant
mortal is no more a man than discord is music.
SH 255:1-6
Eternal Truth is changing the universe. As mortals drop off their mental
swaddling-clothes, thought expands into expression. “Let there be light,” is
the perpetual demand of Truth and Love, changing chaos into order and
discord into the music of the spheres.
SH 519:7
Genesis ii. 1. Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host
of them.
SH 521:5-12
All that is made is the work of God, and all is good. We leave this brief,
glorious history of spiritual creation (as stated in the first chapter of Genesis)
in the hands of God, not of man, in the keeping of Spirit, not matter, —
joyfully acknowledging now and forever God’s supremacy, omnipotence,
and omnipresence.
The harmony and immortality of man are intact.
