ETSO 2017-2018 SEASON
2017-2018 season
welcome!
Programming a season is always a joy and a struggle, but this season was
well worth it. What a season! As usual, there is something for every taste,
I promise! There are soloists of international caliber: Dame Evelyn Glennie,
percussion, Jon Kimura Parker, piano, and the return of the simply amazing
Time for Three. And I'd be crazy not to mention whom we're presenting in
collaboration with the UT Tyler Cowan Center: Yo-Yo Ma!
As for repertoire, I'm looking forward to Beethoven's monumental 9th
Symphony - the Choral Symphony, Bruckner's magisterial 7th, and a
percussion concerto by American composer Jennifer Higdon. Our Veterans
Day concert features both patriotic and contemplative music, inspired by or
written during times of war.
The ETSO concludes its Brahms cycle this season, and you'll once again
hear very new, very old and very "American" music. But I'm even more
excited about the number of works that will be performed
for the first time ever by the ETSO. These pieces are
indicated in the brochure ̵ I invite you to count them
for yourself!
Please order your subscription soon, so that
you can get the best seats in the house for all
concerts, including Yo-Yo Ma!

Considered the preeminent percussionist in the
world, Dame Evelyn Glennie brings her prodigious
talent to Tyler. She is the master of over 1,000
percussion instruments, usually playing at least
50 on every performance. Profoundly deaf, Dame
Glennie feels the vibrations of her instruments
through her entire body. She engages audiences
through her immersive performances, often
with sets, costumes, and lighting. For her Tyler
appearance, Glennie performs the ETSO premiere

of Jennifer Higdon’s Percussion Concerto.

Education is also a primary mission of the East
Texas Symphony Orchestra. The annual ETSO
School Concerts reach fourth and fifth grade
students throughout the East Texas region
providing a unique music experience that is often
a first for these children. In 2017-2018, ETSO
continues as a partner orchestra with Carnegie
Hall in their Link Up series. This year-long program
includes classroom curriculum provided by the
education experts at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music
Institute. Preparation culminates in a participatory
concert for the students. ETSO also encourages
learning opportunities for patrons of all ages
through pre-subscription series concert programs
such as the Opening Notes lectures, community
appearances by Music Director Richard Lee, and
other unique offerings throughout the year.
