The parallels between young, feisty Antig
one and
women all over the world today who are
silenced from
speaking their truth and beliefs, are distu
rbing and
astounding. And this is where theatre
comes in. Since
the Ancient Greeks, people have watc
hed plays for
a variety of reasons- sometimes for lighthearted or
spectacular entertainment, often for a
mirror of real
life, for audiences to be moved, provo
ked, challenged
to think and question their lives, socie
ty and personal
choices. ANTIGONE certainly entertains
our need for a
fascinating story and prompts us to think
what we would
do in her shoes.
The other aspect we end with is cons
idering the power
of social media in our world today- and
how we all have
a choice to use it in a productive and
powerful way.
The girls at Durban Girls’ College inspi
re me with their
enquiring minds, always willing to learn
and grow. They
rise to challenges with the courage of
their convictions,
and are one of the main reasons I chos
e this play. It
is an exciting vehicle for their incredible
talents and
passionate spirits that embrace new ways
of thinking
and expressing themselves with verve
and sensitivity.
