Course Description
Medical terms can be complex, confusing and difficult to memorize. By understanding the origins of the words and their
building blocks - such as roots, prefixes and suffixes, the terminology will make sense and be easier to use in everyday
settings such as doctor’s offices, labs, pharmacies, hospitals and clinics. This course is structured to help you break down
commonly used terms and understand how medical terminology relates to body parts, diseases and procedures.

After completing this course, students should be able to:

Identify basic body anatomy
Recall the history of medical terminology
Recognise medical acronyms, eponyms, homonyms, multiples and plurals
Utilise a wide range of medical vocabulary
Identify physiology terminology

Medical Terminology: An Overview Module 1 Chapters 1-11
Prefixes, Roots, and Suffixes
Module one will take a look at the basics of body anatomy and organisation, the foundation of medical terminology and
why words are structured the way they are. We will look at the relationship between Greek and Latin roots, prefixes,
suffixes and everyday pronunciation.






Medical Terminology: An Overview Module 2 Chapters 12-15
Bones, Muscles, Skin and Sensory
Module two discusses the major body systems such as skeletal, muscular and sensory and their root terminology. We
will cover how systems function together and how they correlate to the overall health of the human body, as well as
pathology, diseases and conditions that affect these systems.






Medical Terminology: An Overview Module 3 Chapters 16-18
Heart, Lungs and Gastrointestinal
Module three covers how your blood vessels, lymph nodes and heart all work together, as well as how the respiratory
system and organs of the digestive system function. We will also recognise the proper way to diagnose gastrointestinal
and respiratory conditions according to the specific body part.






Module four discusses the fundamentals of the body’s endocrine system, the central nervous system and the male and
female reproductive systems. We will also cover easy methods and simple phrases for memorising medical terms
through study guides and tips and tricks.






Method of Instruction
Included with this course are two (2) hours of online tutoring through NetTutor! In addition to your course mentor, a
dedicated NetTutor staff member is available to assist you with questions you have about the materials, ensuring you
have the know-how to successfully complete your course.
Course Certification
Participants who complete the course will be provided a Certificate of Completion issued by HLSCC.
Registration Procedures
To register for the course, persons must submit the registration form and pay the requisite fees at HLSCC’s Fiscal Services.
A payment receipt will be provided and registration form will be stamped with a receipt number. A copy of the stamped
registration form will be provided to the participant, for their personal records.

The total fee for the course is $250.00. This must be paid before the course registration deadline.
