Superfood
Kiwifruit is an oblong, plum-sized
fruit. It is most commonly known
by its fuzzy, brown skin and
emerald green interior. It is most
commonly eaten raw or served in
a fruit salad. A one-cup serving of
kiwifruit contains about 108 calories and
can provide you with more than 250 percent
of the recommended daily value of Vitamin C. Kiwifruit is an optimal
way to consume Vitamin E and folic acid. It is fairly low in sodium and packs
an abundance of potassium and copper. Although many people believe that
the orange provides you with the most amount of Vitamin C per serving, it
is in actuality the kiwifruit that provides the most. It contains about twice the
amount of Vitamin C and even trumps bananas when it comes to potassium
provided per serving.
Nutrition notes
One cup of sliced kiwifruit provides five grams of fiber, which aids in weight loss
by making you feel fuller. It also helps to lower cholesterol. In that same serving
you obtain more than 250 percent of the recommended daily amount of Vitamin C,
which aids in the prevention of various diseases. Kiwifruit also provides 89 percent
of the recommended daily amount of Vitamin K which helps with blood clotting and
absorption of Vitamin D. Other nutrients contained in kiwifruit are Vitamin E and
folate. Kiwifruit provides 13 percent of the recommended daily amount of Vitamin
E and 11 percent of folate. One cup of kiwifruit contains 552mg of potassium, more
than what is found in one banana. It helps control blood pressure and is an allaround, nutritious and low-calorie snack. One medium-sized kiwifruit contains about
46 calories, while a cup full of kiwifruit slices has about 108 calories.

Kiwifruit’s origin can be traced to ancient China
where it was discovered in the Chang Kiang Valley
of China. The kiwifruit was found to be a delicacy
among royalty and was most cherished for its emerald
glow and abundance of flavor. The kiwifruit began to
make its way to other countries around the mid-1800s
and started to be called the Chinese gooseberry.
Not long after, New Zealanders began growing the
fruit and exporting it throughout the world. Shortly
thereafter, the small fruit with a fuzzy skin made its
way to the United States. In 1962, a Safeway shopper
in California requested the local produce supplier
begin importing New Zealand gooseberries. It was
around this same time that the produce supplier began
referring to the fruit as kiwifruit. He decided on this
name because of the fruit’s strong resemblance to
the kiwi, the brown, fuzzy, flightless bird native to New
Zealand. California began producing kiwifruit in the
1960s, primarily in the Delano and Gridley areas.
