ANNOTATIONS
1. Clear and interesting introduction demonstrates that the candidate has understood
the details of the listening text and the question asked. Produces a clear focus on
the theme of the writing. Candidate captivates the reader’s interest through a
creative personal reference at the outset. Direct reference to the question.
2. Throughout the writing, the candidate blends clear references to the original text
with an exploration of his/her own reaction to the ideas presented. The synthesis
of material is carried out smoothly and confidently.
3. Interpretation/application of information from listening text, but goes beyond this
to introduce new ideas.
4. Although the language is not overly formal, the candidate demonstrates mastery
of complex language structures, always used with a clear intent to communicate
with clarity. The language is not error-free, but communication is always achieved
clearly and efficiently.
The logic and flow of the text are maintained through use of structural elements
(paragraphing, topic sentences, examples, connectors).
5. The candidate goes significantly beyond the ideas of the text by developing the
idea that personality has a role to play, including a personal example.
6. The student begins with a generic comment, leading seamlessly into an explicit
identification of the issues raised in the reading text. This seamlessness is
maintained throughout the response, weaving together evidence from the text,
exploration of the ideas presented and extrapolation.
7. The student demonstrates independence of thinking, presented in a humorous
manner. Frequently the student takes a point made in the text and develops if
further, demonstating independent reflection.
8. This was one of the few students who went well beyond the text, by exploring and
exemplifying related ideas and introducing personal examples which were relevant
and well-connected.
