Use examples from the selection. Tony Hawk is an excellent athlete. He practiced hard as a child, and became a successful skateboarder at an early age. He also has the best record of any skateboarder in history. 2. What can you infer about the goals Tony set for himself as a child? Tony set goals for himself that were hard to reach. He worked very hard to reach them. He was disappointed if he didn’t do his best. 3. Read this quote from the selection: “Tony started playing on the bright blue board. Crash! Bang! Slam!” The words crash, bang, and slam are examples of onomatopoeia. Explain the effect this type of word has on the reader. Using words like crash crash, bang bang, and slam helps the reader imagine Tony Hawk riding on his skateboard. Using words like these makes the text come alive. Select two of Hawk’s accomplishments that you think are the most amazing. Explain why. The two accomplishments of Tony Hawk that I think are the most amazing are his skateboarding record and his foundation. Tony Hawk must be an incredible athlete to have such a great skateboarding record. I also think it is great that he decided to do something nice by using his foundation to help build skate parks. 5. The sport of skateboarding and Tony Hawk’s career declined but later became successful again. The author describes Hawk’s rising success with the statement “And the Hawk became the ‘Phoenix.’” Explain what the author meant by this statement. The author meant that Tony Hawk rebuilt his career after he had lost almost everything.
