Wednesday Letter Dixie Elementary P: (502) 485-8238 F: (502) 485-8448 5th Grade Writing Prompt Writing Situation: The first 10 amendments to the Constitution are known as the Bill of Rights. These amendments guarantee “the people” certain freedoms by placing specific limits on our government. The first Amendment to our Constitution reads: *Protects freedom of religion *Protects freedom of speech *Protects freedom of the press *Gives the right to assemble peacefully *Gives the right to voice complaints to the government Writing Directions: Choose one of the protections or rights above and write a blog to explain why “this” protection or right is of importance to you, your family, your community, or your school. Congratulations to Elainah McDougal in Mrs. Koppel’s 5th grade class! I feel freedom of speech is important because we should be allowed to speak freely. Freedom of speech allows us to voice our opinions and allows us to stand up for ourselves, if necessary. It also gives us the liberty to be ourselves. I would not want to live anywhere where freedom of speech is not allowed. Is it important to you too? Congratulations to Merceylees Watson in Mrs. Koppel’s 5th grade class! I choose freedom to assemble peacefully, because we should be able to express our feelings as long as we do it in peace. Another reason is, it answers the need to come together, share common beliefs and to act upon those beliefs. It’s important because we have the freedom to stand up for what we believe. If you can’t freely associate with others, then you can’t form a group that has political power. Those groups are the cornerstone of what makes up an open and Democratic society.
