Weighing Success
Pick up something heavy.
Congratulations, you swim! You must be so healthy! Unfortunately, that’s only partially true. One of the other key facets
to healthy living is strength training. I’m sure most of you, like
myself, shake your heads and say, I know its good for me,
BUT…. These buts usually come in the form of “I don’t have time”, “I
detest going to the gym” or “I’m afraid I’ll get bulky”. The bottom line is,
weight training is important for not only muscle maintenance and stability but also bone strength and weight management. It can help you
sharpen your focus, reduce stress, and as we (cough, cough) AGE, it becomes even more important to keep your muscles from atrophying.
Muscle mass literally diminishes with age.
As you read through this edition of the SPM Newsletter, consider that a
good portion of the SPM members who compete in the various competitions throughout the year don’t just swim. Many use Crossfit, personal
training, or cross-training with running & biking to help give them the
competitive edge. You too can experience a steady or even increased
measure of success by adding in a strength workout to your daily regimen. So go throw some weights around!

St. Pete Masters LCM Meet Results
A beautiful summer weekend at gorgeous North Shore Aquatic Center yielded
some fast swimming from quite a few of our SPM members. Welcome and
congrats to newbie members, Andrew Glenn, Lenny Hughes, Ryan Brady and
Tom Leonard for joining us and participating in the meet. Also welcome back
to Tiffany Weidner as she made her return debut after two babies, with some
very nice swimming and winning a high point towel. Also taking home a high
point towel from our team were: Andrew Glenn (18-24), Ryan Brady (30-34),
Livia Zien (45-49), Tom Leonard (45-49), Kern Davis (60-64) and Anne Page
(65-69). Many, many thanks to the incredible SPM volunteers: Brooke Bowman, Colleen Schweitzer, Paula Texel, Miles Williams, Alex Woodworth, Katy
Kline, Gary Bastie, Anne Archer and Melissa Harasz. Spouses that gave a hand
were Kurt Steinmann (Sharon) and Greg Carlin (Livia Zien). We always have
an excellent officiating staff and thank you to some of the best officials in the
state: Dan Nardozzi, Kevin Mooren, Charlotte Petersen, Charlie Kohnken and
Joanne Gauzens !
Spring Nationals
Judge Bob Beach was our lone team member at the USMS Spring Nationals
out in California. Although no gold’s were collected in the ‘Golden’ State Bob
did not disappoint with fantastic swims in the 200, 500 and 1650 Free events
and his 200 Back. Bob also took a recent road trip north to Chattanooga, TN
to swim in the USMS Open Water 2.4 mile Championship event where he
took 1st place in the 80-84 age group with a time of 1hr 29min.
In late April, thirty plus SPM
team mates took the bay
and the streets of St. Pete
in the annual St. Anthony’s
Triathlon. This year’s race
featured an Olympic distance course and a Sprint
course. Fifteen competed
in the Olympic distance as
individual races, led by Nat
Glackin. There were at least
10 participating on relays
with both Ted Bradley and
Colleen Schweitzer leading
relay swimmers out of the
water. In the sprint race I
spotted SPM club president
Melissa Harasz , Davenia
Navaroli and Patty Connolly
at the run turn around. To
all of you, fantastic job!
Ironman Austria
On June 29th, Dawn Clark,
Carolyn Kiper and Timothy
Kennedy competed in Ironman Austria. Dawn was the
first to finish of the three in
15hr 14min, followed by
Tim 6 ½ minutes later and
finally Carolyn at 16hr
31min. You all are amazing!
Hurricane Man
It was a stormy morning
and the God Thor flung his
lightning bolt in the direction of St. Pete and Pass-agrille Beaches causing the
cancellation of the 2.4 distance for 2014. Thank you
for understanding, as our
concern is always the safety
of the swimmers, officials,
race workers and spectators. Until next year…!!!

A Heartfelt Thank You
This was sent to Sandy Steer, after the pool was dedicated to former
coach,George Bole, from his daughter:
“Thank you so much for the photos, programme, and the wonderful city flag.
My grandchildren think it is amazing and can’t believe how big it is. We so
enjoyed looking at everything and we are all extremely grateful for everything that the city and St. Pete Masters did to make this happen. Long may
you continue to proudly wear the St. Pete Masters t-shirt!

“If the Sky’s the Limit, then Why are there Footprints on the Moon?” (Logic)
Some say after only a few years of swimming with a team, you have learned everything the sport has to offer. I believe
it is much deeper than that. Alongside teamwork, swimming has taught me to embrace aptitudes in leadership, dedication, sacrifice, time management and the concept that I mostly highly regard-mental tenacity. With mental tenacity,
elite athletes will agree, it is possible to achieve peak performance and maximize physical potential.
Setting my standards high has forced to me to challenge myself and has helped me achieve goals over the years. This
has ranged from achieving a time standard at a swim meet, achieving a higher grade on a calculus test or closing on a
business deal. I can take the road less traveled with more confidence and direction because of swimming.
I modeled a “Baby Gator” homecoming outfit for my first photograph taken in the delivery unit at St. Anthony’s hospital. I believe it was my destiny to become a Florida Gator and, by middle school, my desire to achieve the status of a
collegiate swimmer. When my club coach, Fred, received a letter of interest in me from the University of Florida (UF)
Head Coach Troy, I continued to work hard to prove that I could meet the standards of hard work athletically and academically that were required of me. With mental tenacity, as my swim coach has taught me: “It’s up to you, all upstairs, in between the ears.”
A memorable moment with Coach Fred, one frosty December morning, was when I was in a slump and was having
difficulty staying motivated he had me read, instead of swim, a book titled “Iron Will: Inside the Mind of a Navy Seal”.
He said, “Mr. Farese, go read the chapters I have marked. Come talk to me when you’re done.” My realization was
that my previous weeks’ training had me simply going through the motions versus making progress in my craft due to
my lack of “Iron Will”.
“Test sets or lactate sets” are the ultimate test of perseverance. They are the furthest from easy but the best test of
your mental game. Those who can push through the barrier of pain can get to a place that I like to call the “danger
zone”, similar to the song. This is the area where one, due to physical exhaustion, redlines, to a degree, but also the
area where improvement is made and, thus, allowing progress forward with their craft.
At the University of Florida, there is a lot of competition both academically and athletically as well as endless opportunities to make me the best I can be. As with any road you take there will be distractions and detours but with the end
in sight it is my duty not to veer off the selected path. The ability to keep pushing forward and facing hardships with
the “danger zone” mentality is crucial, I believe, for headway in life. Upon graduation, I know that many business connections and networking opportunities will be present with my fellow masters’ swim teammates.
It begs the question, “ If the sky’s the limit, then why are there footprints on the moon?” (Logic)
Thank you for your consideration of me as a candidate for the George Bole Memorial Scholarship 2014.

Open Water - Feats of Strength!
Several weeks after completing the TB Marathon Swim Carl ventured south of
the border so he could compete in the 10k swim of El Cruce ~ Cancun to Isla
Mujeres. Unfortunately weather interfered with the planned 10k; it was
shortened to 6K. Carl was 1st in his age group and 17th overall with an outstanding time of 1hr 25min. Way to go Carl!
Not to be outdone, Chris Burke headed north to NYC and competed in the
Manhattan Island Marathon Swim on Saturday, June 14th. Chris was blessed
with a great day and his navigation of the Island of Manhattan was completed
in 7hr 42min. Chris was the 6th swimmer out of the water and 4th male finisher overall. How great was it that Tim Kennedy made the trip up to NYC to
surprise Chris at the race? Cannot say enough about our supportive, fabulous
team members!
Bumpy Jones Invitational Results
Venturing south across the Skyway Bridge, Cheryl Kupan, Jodi Schwartz, Barbara McNulty and Kern Davis proudly represented the club at the annual
Bumpy Jones LMC Meet in Sarasota. Jodi led the way with eight first place
finishes in her 45-49 age group; Cheryl made a great showing with three 1st
and five 2nd’s in her new age group. Barbara was her ever consistent self with
a great 800 Free and 200 Fly (2 of her many events) and finally Kern (also
aged up) and dominated the distance Free and IM events.
Coaches Corner
After spending many years coaching, I have come to the conclusion that in
most cases there is really no substitute for hard work, particularly in the case
of the “late to the sport” swimmers. Stroke technique is important and is
always going to be a large part of making someone a better swimmer, but the
bottom line is that you have to swim, and swim A LOT, to get better. With
that being said, SPM has a relatively new member, Andrea DeTomasi, who
recently shared his success. Andrea began swimming last November in the
Tuesday/Thursday triathlon training group that meets at North Shore, in anticipation of competing in the Hurricane Man Swim. He quickly realized that
he needed to join St. Pete Masters and did so earlier this year. He dutifully
practiced six days a week and took advice from myself and some other swimmers in the afternoon practices. Unfortunately the Hurricane Man event was
cancelled, so instead, to gauge his progress, he re-did one of his first timed
workouts he completed with the triathlon group. Here are the results:

too. Set goals for your swimming – enter Go the Distance on USMS, enter a
meet, enter a triathlon, swim in a postal event or just make a vow to show
up more often and see what you can do!
