Presidents Report 2015
Scott Fergusson
2015 has been my third year as President and once it’s been a very enjoyable year and still very
much a learning curve.
As with last year I feel that our club is really humming along nicely, there’s a good vibe in and around
the club and I hope everyone is looking forward to next year. 2016 will most likely be my final year in
this role and it will most likely be one of the busiest years in recent times at the club with some
exciting things planned.
I think it’s important to carry this comment forward from last year’s report and in that this club is
owned by it’s members. Yes we lease the land from the Hastings District Council but the club is ours.
We all take pride in the club and present ourselves in a good light within the local community. The
yearly subs pay for the majority of things but not to run the club. The club is run by the committee all
on a voluntary basis and we do our very best to keep everyone happy and run the best club in
Hawkes Bay.
One thing I think that sets our club and its committee apart is that we don’t have committee
members with their own agenda, we’re all on the committee because we want to be the best club in
Hawkes Bay and don’t do this job for personal gain. We’ve got a great committee with a good mix of
long standing members and new blood coming through.
Our website in the latter part of this year has taken a bit of a holiday, we are looking at
integrating a new website with pay2play and it’s new booking system in 2016. More on this later.

A highlight for me this year has been the huge success of our juniors, we have a large number
of kids playing our sport which can only be a positive for the club in the years to come.
Julie’s Juniors nights Friday nights.
HAVELOCK NORTH SQUASH CLUB JUNIOR REPORT
JUNIOR SQUASH REPORT 2015
Scottie has asked me to write a report on the juniors for this AGM, he said make sure it is not a
novel, which is really hard not to do as it has been such a fantastic year for junior squash at HNSC.
Our HB Seafoods Junior Club Night held on Friday evenings is attracting 30 – 40 kids per
night. Which is a fantastic amount of kids all wanting to come along and learn the game on a casual
basis. From this night we are attracting a lot of new junior members as well as families wanting to
join. A huge thanks to our helpers on this night Murray Sutherland and Steve Rickman. Also a big
thank you to HB Seafoods whose continued support of this night by providing discounted fish and
chips helps to make this night such a success.
We have had an amazing number of juniors playing tournaments this year. At the HBSRC
Open they had 20 entries from HNSC juniors. We have had some brilliant results in tournaments all
over NZ from our juniors. Zara Evans and Jena Gregory won the teams event at the AIMS games in
Tuaranga. Over the year we have had 6 juniors appear in the top ten rankings of their age group in
NZ. Rhiarne Taiapa and Winona-Jo Joyce have both been selected to represent NZ this year.
As our juniors go up the grades we are seeing an increasing number of juniors in our interclub
and elimination teams. HNSC sent three teams to Nationals with E grade coming home as winners.
Contributing to these team were junior players!
HNSC has the most junior members of the squash clubs in the Eastern District with 48. This is
increasing steadily all the time.
We are very fortunate at our club to have two main coaches, Joel le Comte and Murray
Sutherland who are both extremely experienced and producing fantastic results from those juniors
who choose to have coaching. Joel currently has a group of around 8 juniors he is coaching and
goes above and beyond his job as a coach, these kids have been bike riding up hills, rock climbing

and soon to walk up Kaweka J as part of his coaching. Murray coaches groups of juniors as well as
individuals and he too goes above and beyond the expectations of a coach, often travelling to watch
juniors play away and has a huge passion as well as knowledge of the game. These two compliment
each other very well as you can see from the results our juniors are achieving.
Overall , it is great to see so many juniors enjoying the game of squash, both socially and
competitively at the HNSC and being a part of our club. It has certainly been an amazing year for
junior squash at our club.

Ladies nights Tuesday continues to grow, we are very lucky to have Megan and Rewi Joyce
as the driving force behind this. And I must also thank those coaches that have come down and
helped out. The Joyce family on the whole are great to have in the club and I think we can count
ourselves very lucky to have them as part of our success.
Pay2play continues to be an ever growing beast, both locally and nationally. For us here as the
pilot club for the system we see more and more people picking up a racket and having a go for the
first time which is great. In 2016 we will be using the new pay2play booking system, replacing the
isquash system, we will also be looking at using the pay2play website platform which should be an
improvement on the current sportsground site.
Business house continues as strong as ever. Kent has taken over from Bryan this year and
has continued off from where BP left it doing an awesome job. We have a great core group that play
every year and each time business house rolls around there is a few new faces that have been roped
into playing and it’s clear from their first few weeks playing that win or lose they enjoy the fun and
social aspect of business house which is exactly what it’s all about. So again from the club we thank
Kent. I must thank the business house sponsors and the Village Butcher who supplies the sausages
and also the raffle vouchers each week.

In 2016 we host the North Island Championships and before that we intend to make some
much needed changes and updates to the club. A new kitchen and accessway to Court 4 is first on
the list. The kitchen really needs updating, removing the stairwell and freeing up the access steps on
court 4 will allow us to open up the viewing area to court 3 and 4 and also allow us to have a much
larger dedicated storeroom downstairs instead dumping stuff in the kitchen or bar areas.
Thank you to the club's numerous sponsors big and small, your support is invaluable and will
again be important to us in 2016 in particular for the North Island Champs.
As I did last year, I’d like to highlight certain events from 2015. As it did in 2014 it really
highlights what a busy and successful year we have had again. There is certainly not everything
mentioned in here, there a number of notable individual player performances and things the club has
done this year and I’ve just picked most of them.

And that’s about it.
Thanks to the 2015 Committee:
Andrew Coyle: our long suffering Treasurer who does a magic job keeping the books tidy ensuring we
once again turn a healthy profit in 2015.
Bryan Powlesland: Secretary. BP is a very big part of our successful club and does a hell of a lot
more than people would ever guess.
Along with myself, 2016 will be BP and Coylee’s last years in their roles…...the search for their
successors begins with big shoes to fill.

And the rest in no particular order:
Julie Evans: Junior Nights Fridays, Julie is certainly a machine when it comes to running the Juniors
and this is very important for the future strength of our club.
Gay Monteith: Resident physio and also keeps business house nibbles stocked each week.
Grant Brodie: Grant is stepping down from the committee and will be missed as he’s great to have on
the team. I do know he’ll be one of the first people to put his hand up to help when we need him next
year.
Kent Maynard: Business House, Club Champs and general tech geek. The club is almost solely
paperless now with its documents stored online and Kent is the reason for that. It’s made a huge
difference to everyone that uses it regularly being able to access whatever we need online and on our
phones. Kent keeps everything up to date and for me has been a great sounding board for most of
my stupid ideas. Not to single any one person out but for me Kent has been an absolute star this
year.
Mike Hinton: Mike continues to be into pretty much every aspect at the club and a very important
committee member.
Ray Ching: The most important man at the club by far…Ray scours the bay for the best bar prices,
buys , loads , transports unloads, stock rotates, and fills our fridges - a very large part of the reason
that we continue to show a profit year in and year out.
Alan Rigby This was Rigger’s first year on the committee and when we wasn’t swaning around in the
UK for the World Cup he’s really good have on the committee.
Rewi Joyce Again someone who continues to grow as a personality at the club and along with wife
Megan runs Ladies Night. A top man from a great family that we are lucky to have.
Next year we welcome Liz Hay, Jacqui Mattsen and Murray Sutherland to the committee. Liz and
Jacqui are going to bring a lot of enthusiasm and Murray’s experience will be great into the busy year
next year.

Key dates for the 2016 season.
May will see our Open played again. This Tournament will be smaller than this year’s with our
focus on the North Island Champs. Look for our Open to be back bigger and better in 2017.
North Island Champs - Friday 8th July 2016 to Sunday 10th
29th July is the weekend for Regional Superchamps to be held in Gisborne
21st September for Nationals Superchamps
So to sum up and finish, thank you to everyone this year. As I said at the start we’ve got a
great close committee and I look forward to us all working together again in what will be a very busy
2016. To our members, we’ve got a great committed group of members and I can see the club having
another strong year in 2016.
Thanks again and I wish you all a good end to the year, a good Christmas and relaxing break
over New Year and we will see you in 2016.
Cheers,
Scott Fergusson
