Dear Central High Supporters,
Return Service Requested
It's been eight years since the Central
High School Foundation started, and
five-and-a-half since our office opened
in a private residence. We began as a
grass roots organization, composed of
people who have been touched by
Central High School and want the fine
education it offers to be part of the
Dr. Rusty Crossman '66 with daughters
lives of future generations.
Liz '95 and Ally '98 at the 5th Hall of
Fame Event, October 2, 2003.
In our short history, the Foundation
has grown tremendously, in both the number of organizations it supports and
the services it offers, and in the financial support it provides to the students,
teachers and programs of Central High School. We have been extremely
successful in keeping Central High School alive in the hearts and minds of our
constituents.

Central Hosts News Conference to
Kick-off the 150! Omaha Birthday
Festival
On July 2, 2004, Bruce R. Lauritzen (at
the podium), chairman and CEO of
First National Bank, and Omaha
Mayor Mike Fahey (standing), held a
news conference on the east steps of
Central to announce the activities of
Omaha’s 150! Birthday Festival
weekend, July 16-18.
We support the groups under our umbrella with events such as the annual PEP
Auction, and answer calls from people asking for help in genealogy research.
We continue to increase the Scholarship Endowment Fund, and to assist donors
in establishing named scholarships to honor friends and family members.
Our Foundation is Growing...
(We’re outgrowing our space!)

The restricted funds (see graph on page 2) raised by the Foundation make a huge
difference for Central students, he said.
"For example, there's a donor who has provided $10,000 a year to the Science
Department, and has done so for several years," Mr. Bexten explained. "This has
allowed the instructors to purchase the supplies needed to offer the students some
incredible scientific experiences."
Mr. Bexten said donations that go through the Foundation often impact students for
many years, citing a donation by the Gates Foundation a few years ago for technology
in the school.
"The Foundation's activities complement and enhance our core mission, which is
making sure our students get a great education," he said.
To address these concerns, the Foundation has begun a strategic planning
process to help create a unified vision and direction for all of those who care
deeply about Central High School. Building on the rich traditions of
generations, this process will insure that the outstanding education Central
offers will continue.
Please join us in supporting the tradition of excellence at Central High School.
We anticipate moving into a larger office space as soon as possible, and
would deeply appreciate the donation of the following new or gently used
items:

history.
"Besides raising funds, maintaining our Scholarship Endowment Fund, and helping
many of our organizations, Terry Price does tremendous work in alumni relations," he
said. "When we have people contact us with questions, we can send them to the
Foundation for up-to-date information."
I couldn't be prouder of our growth and accomplishments. However, the
Foundation is at a critical juncture in its development. As we continue to
increase our day-to-day services, more staff and space are required to continue
our efforts. More financial support is also needed for the Foundation itself, to
keep our lights on and doors open to help all who love Central.
Founded in 1996, the CHS Foundation's role of supporting Central and a
number of its organizations has grown significantly in scope over the years.
Today, the Foundation is providing more services than ever before, and
involving larger number of alumni, parents and educators in its work.

According to Central Principal Jerry Bexten, the CHS Foundation is truly an asset to
Central.
We assist alumni in planning class reunions.
The CHS Foundation office has operated from a private residence since
December 1998. With our growth and increased responsibilities, it is not
surprising that we are in need of additional space to keep functioning
effectively.
Central was selected as the venue for
the announcement to commemorate
Omaha’s first picnic, which was held
July 4, 1854 on Capital Hill (the site of
CHS), to celebrate the founding of the
new city.

Campus Update
• The $16 million renovation to Central as a result of the bond issue passed several
years ago is in full swing, and should be completed by December as scheduled. The
building renovation includes upgrading the electrical and network capabilities
throughout the school, and installing air conditioning. The gym has also been enlarged
significantly.
Pat Salerno '58, president of Central's Alumni Association, noted that the
organization relies heavily on the Foundation office to support its activities
"This office is significant because Terry Price, our administrative secretary
and treasurer, supplies needed support services not only to the Foundation,
but also to all the other groups which fall under the Foundation's umbrella,"
he said. "The office needs additional personnel, space and funding to
operate effectively."
• A generous donation from Susie Buffett '71 will provide funding for a lobby adjacent
to the gym on the north side of the school. This will provide Central the space and
services necessary to host home basketball games. The Foundation paid for the initial
designs for this project.
12
• Work is also underway on Central's new stadium and multi-purpose field, just north
of the school. The facility will be used extensively for band, flag corps and
cheerleading practices, physical education and ROTC classes and track, soccer and
football activities. It will allow Central to continue its heritage of excellence in sports,
and to host home games at the school.

Ruth Pilling Remembered CentralWe Remember Miss Pilling
Miss Ruth Helene Pilling '26 was a teacher at Central from 1936 to 1973. She was a
chairman of the foreign language department and one of Central's first counselors. Ruth
contributed heavily to the curriculum at Central. She mainly taught Latin, but also
taught English, French and Greek, and helped develop Central's language laboratory.
Peggy Wheeler Scholarship Established
Peggy Aufencamp Wheeler '84 was closely connected to Central High School
throughout her life. In addition to being an alum, she also taught at Central from 1989
to 2002. When she passed away from cancer in November 2003, her family chose to
ask for memorials to come to the CHS Foundation for scholarships in Peggy's memory.
"It was what she wanted," said her mother, Betty Aufencamp. "She wanted her students
to do well and to become contributing members of society."
Her interests in language and biology served her well in her passion for travel, which
led her throughout the world to every continent with the exception of Antarctica. Ruth
often traveled with fellow female teachers, and created a large collection of picture
slides of her adventures. Her nephew, John Pilling '64, said one of the favorite things
she did was have Christmas dinner at Ayer's Rock in Australia.
Peggy began her teaching career as an English instructor, but developed an interest in
computers. She earned a master's degree in computer science, and eventually taught
computer graphics courses at Central. She worked with a group of instructors to
develop curriculum, a program called "Pathways," for the department. Peggy was
married to Dan Wheeler, and they had a daughter, Phoebe.
"She often would stay up late grading papers before her deadline at the end of the
school year and leave the next day for the summer, only to return three or four days
before the school year began," said John.
The Peggy Wheeler Scholarship is to be given to students who have tried to achieve.
Her travels included a visit to Iraq and Iran during a conflict period, a road trip to PreColumbian ruins, visits through most of Europe, and stays in Egypt, Hong Kong, China,
and Yucatan.
Among Ruth's accomplishments were serving as Nebraska's state representative for the
Classical Association of the Middle West and South, being selected for Phi Delta
Gamma and Mu Sigma Honoraries, and receiving a John Hay Fellowship to Bennington
College in Vermont. She was a life member of the American Association of University
Women and a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution organization for 75
years. In 2000 Ruth was
inducted into the CHS Hall of
Fame as a distinctive alumni
and teacher.
Ruth Pilling died September 11,
2003. Through her will, she left
money to the CHS Foundation
to be used for scholarships.
According to another nephew,
Bob Pilling, Ruth loved life,
teaching, travel, cars, and she
loved her students. Bob also
added that if it weren't for her
hearing she would have taught
longer, saying that she was the
type of teacher you would work
hard for and remember.
"They don't have to be the very best students, simply young people who are sincere
about furthering their education," said Betty.
This year, two Central students, Michael Alfaro '04 and Ashley Myers '04, received
Peggy Wheeler Scholarships.
Instructor’s Donation Provides for
“Best French Award”
When French instructor Beverly Fellman '59 won a Buffett Award in 2003, she
generously donated the money to the Central High School Foundation to provide for the
"Best French Award."
This award, based solely on merit, is given annually to a junior that has completed four
years of French classes, and is enrolled for a fifth year of study, usually at the Advanced
Placement (AP) level. The "Best French Award" provides funds for an outstanding
student to travel to a French-speaking country for an extended home stay. In 2003,
Vanessa Brutsche '04 was the honorary winner, but was unable to go due to concerns
about foreign travel. This summer, Caitlin Monaghan will spend three weeks with a
French family, and another week touring the country.
Miss Ruth Pilling '26 attended the 100th
anniversary of the founding of Central's Latin
Club with her nephew, John Pilling '64, in spring
2003.
"As a language instructor, I know that immersion vastly increases a person's ability as
well as their understanding of a different culture," said Fellman. "It gives me great
pleasure knowing that I am able to give this type of experience to one very deserving
student each year."
Family Honors Alum with Scholarship
Central alum Yale Trustin '42 received a memorable surprise at his family birthday
dinner this April. Yale’s children, Bonnie, Mark and Lisa Trustin, and daughter-in-law,
Marcia Angle, had established an annual scholarship in his name through the CHS
Foundation in honor of his 80th birthday. A $3,000 Yale Trustin Scholarship will be
presented each year to a deserving Central senior.
"This was a very nice thing for my family to do," said Yale. "It was a meaningful gift to
me, and it will be meaningful for the students who receive the scholarship as well. I felt
honored."
Yale says his years at Central were an important part of his life and have contributed
much to what he has strived for over the years. While at Central, Yale participated in
ROTC and played on the baseball team. He has fond memories of his teachers, and
remembers their cooperation in helping him to prepare his application for the West Point
Academy.
"When I attended Central, the wonderful thing about it was that it was in the center of
town and represented students of every racial, ethnic and religious group, yet everyone
got along," he said. "I remember a real harmony."
The scholarship is based on financial need, academics and citizenship. It is to be
awarded to a student who is serious about continuing his or her education, but is not
limited to students attending four-year colleges. Tamara Cooks '04 received the first
Yale Trustin scholarship this May.
Paul Jepsen Scholarships Provide College Opportunity for Deserving Students
Initiated in 2002, the Paul Jepsen (`29) Scholarship, has thus far awarded six Central
students with four-year college scholarships. Each year, the Jepsen family, including Ed
Jepsen `61, Jackie Jepsen McLellan `58, and Holly Jepsen Hoberman `65, select two
Central seniors to receive the $10,000 per year scholarship through an interview process.
Ryan Melton ‘02, one of the 2002 recipients, will be
returning to Iowa State this fall for his third year of
school. Originally entering college with aspirations of
becoming a meteorologist, Ryan has since changed his
majors to Political Science, Journalism, and History.
"It was a dream come true for my family," he said of
winning the scholarship.
Ryan said that his college experience has taught him
that it is okay to struggle as long as you learn from it.
He also said he has become more mature and has
learned to interact more with other people.
Ryan Melton '02, one of the
first Paul Jepsen Scholarship
recipients.
"There are a lot of diverse opinions in college, and
discussing opinions with others about things at school or in the world has been helpful
to me intellectually," he explained.
Two other students who have benefited from the Jepsen scholarship are Larry Coleman
'03 and Van Do '04.
"The interview process with the Jepsen family was a remarkable experience," Larry
commented. "They were very easy, receptive, and open."
Larry is attending Oral Roberts University where he is pursuing majors in Business
Finance and Pastoral Christian Youth Ministries, and a minor in Spanish. Van Do will
be attending Creighton this fall, majoring in computer science. He said the scholarship
made his college decision much easier.
Ed Jepsen has established a
trust with the CHS
Foundation as a beneficiary
to insure the continued
funding of the scholarship.
Ed Jepsen said the
scholarship is based on
academic achievement and
extracurricular involvement
as well as need.
"My parents recognized the
importance of education and

Organizations under our umbrella enjoy our 501 (c) 3 nonprofit status and assistance in raising and managing funds. To learn more about the CHS
Foundation or any of these organizations, please visit the Foundation web site at www.centralhighomaha.org.
Central High School Alumni Association (CHSAA)
• "Keeping Central Central"
The CHSAA works to preserve Central's heritage and future by
keeping its alumni connected to the school. With database and
mailing assistance from the CHS Foundation, the Alumni Association's Alumni Register
Newsletter helps Central maintain contact with more than 21,000 graduates.
The Alumni Association also selects the inductees for the CHS Hall of Fame, and
sponsors the event each fall. At the Hall of Fame ceremony, inductees are encouraged to
visit with current CHS students, giving the students a chance to interact with successful
graduates in many fields. Pat Salerno '58 (also a former Central English teacher and
CHSAA's current President), said the interaction between generations has been well-received.
V.O.I.C.E. (Volunteer Organization
Investing in Choral Excellence)
• Advancing Central's vocal music and fine arts program
Central's V.O.I.C.E. organization promotes Central's Vocal
Music Department performances and provides assistance for the
department through volunteers and financial support, while also
supporting Central High School as a whole. It does this in part
by paying for all A Cappella and CHS Singers uniforms, and by sponsoring vocal music
students' participation in competitions.
Former CHS Singers '98 Corey
McCallan, Luke White and
Jenny Kniewel enjoying the
Madrigal Feaste in March 2004.
"Both students and inductees have enjoyed this special opportunity to converse with one
another," he said.
Other Alumni Association activities include retaining CHS memorabilia and historical
documents; maintaining display cases in the school; keeping record of materials written
by CHS graduates; and helping alumni plan events and organize class reunions.
PEP (Parents, Educators, and Pupils)
• Benefiting Central's teachers and students
Since it was established in 1979, PEP has functioned as
Central's parent-teacher organization.
PEP raises funds to benefit Central and its students
through the sale of the school's directory, refreshments at fine art events, and CHS
specialty items such as t-shirts and sweatshirts.
The organization also holds an annual auction to provide funds for student scholarships
and teacher grants. These funds are awarded to Central teachers for classroom materials
and special projects.
Last March, the 24th annual PEP Auction raised $60,000 for scholarships and teacher
grants. According to Kendra Quinlan, one of the organization's co-presidents,
assistance from the CHS Foundation was essential to its execution and success.
"The Foundation is absolutely instrumental
to the PEP fundraiser. Without the
Foundation's database of alumni, parents,
and staff, I don't know if we would be able
to do it," she explained.
PEP Auction 2004 Co-Chairs (and 2004
Co-Presidents) Mo Anderl '72 and
Kendra Quinlan.
In addition to raising funds, PEP helps plan
and provides assistance for many of
Central's annual events, including the PostProm Party; the Holiday Tea event for
faculty; freshmen orientation; Purple
Feather Day (for students with a
cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or
higher); and the Senior Recognition event.
CHS Band Parents
• Supporting Central's band program
The CHS Band Parents is an organization of parents and
students that assists with band activities. This dedicated
group helps to transport instruments, organizes volunteers
and assists with a variety of band events such as parades.
"The Central High Band Parent organization makes a great impact on the school. We
support the band both financially and physically," said Cindy Coldwell Serfass '78,
who, along with husband Bob Serfass, were co-presidents of the organization during the
2003-2004 school year. "It is the support of the parents that helps keep the band
running. We help load and unload equipment, provide needed refreshments, and assist
the band at football games."
The organization meets monthly and puts out a periodical newsletter as well.
"We keep information flowing and we have even completed a renovation of the band
room," said Cindy.
Band Parents is also involved in the Swing Dance. Held each spring, the event includes
an alumni/parent band that Band Parents helps to organize. Cindy indicated that this
program has been very successful with alumni, and that next year they anticipate
forming two bands.

Matt Hovde '92, a former member of A Cappella
and CHS Singers, is currently working in Chicago's
elite "Second City" acting school. He has fond
memories of his music program experiences.
"The CHS Singers in particular have always been
ideal ambassadors for the program and for Central
itself. Memories of caroling at the Joslyn Art
Museum, tackling challenging choral works for
competition, and celebrating music and friendship
with my fellow singers are worth preserving
indeed," he said. "I am still inspired to this day by
all the arts and theatre I learned while at Central."
Longtime Central vocal music
instructors Patricia Allender
(taught 1964-97) and
Bob Mc Meen (taught 1967-95)
were honored at CHS Singers 30year celebration.
This past March, V.O.I.C.E. and Central's music
department celebrated 30 years of CHS Singers.
During its annual banquet, the Madrigal Feaste, CHS invited former members of the
CHS Singers to perform alongside with alumni and students. The CHS Foundation's
database was utilized to extract names of all former CHS Singers, so they could be
invited to attend the anniversary event. The event drew 280 people, about 100 more
than would usually attend.
"With the help of the Foundation, we were able to produce a targeted mailing and
contact alumni who participated in CHS Singers during the last 30 years," said Shelley
Erikson, V.O.I.C.E. co-president. "We were able to raise money for five $400
scholarships which we wouldn't have been able to provide otherwise. The Foundation's
database is a great thing to keep people in the loop."
Athletic Booster Club
• Assisting Central's athletic teams, cheerleaders
and pom squad
The Athletic Booster Club was established to help
improve and support Central's athletic teams, cheerleaders, and pom squad. The group
reviews athletic spending budgets, finances each season's sports banquets, works to
promote memberships to the Club, and organizes fundraisers.
One such fundraiser is the annual Golf Outing, which began in 2003. Approximately
220 golfers have participated in the first two golf events, which raised a total of $27,500.
These proceeds have been earmarked for the purchase of equipment for the Athletic
Department, which will likely include items associated with the new multi-purpose
stadium and field: press box chairs, concession stand equipment, a vehicle to transport
track and football equipment, etc. Next year's Golf Outing is scheduled for June 6, 2005
at Ironwood Golf Course.
Dr. Dan Blanke, who with his wife Kathy, has led the club the last three years, said the
Athletic Booster Club has visited with many of the school's coaches to offer assistance.
"In the last couple of years, we have provided the opportunity for coaches to make
requests of the Booster Club. As a result, we have recently furnished the girl's soccer
team with a camcorder, provided uniform assistance for the men's wrestling team, and
purchased goals for the indoor soccer team and a batting cage net for the baseball team,
among other things," he said.
In the past year, Band Parents has switched their finances over to the CHS Foundation.
This has helped the organization function better financially. Cindy said she is thankful
for the Foundation's help.
The Foundation has supported the Booster Club in its work by providing a web master
to post all of the group's information on the Foundation website. According to Dan, this
has become the organization's primary communication tool and a mechanism to
highlight all athletes, coaches and teams. He said he is thankful to the Foundation for its
help in furthering the Booster Club's achievements and is optimistic about the club's
future.
"Thanks and double thanks to Terry Price who I know made more than one trip to
Central with a needed check," she said. "We were much more able to create a budget
and plan for the future with the help of the Foundation."
Dan also added, "If Rusty (Crossman) had not taken the initiative and told me about the
status of the Booster Club and its importance to CHS I may not have become as
involved as I did.”

Since 1999, the CHS Foundation has sponsored the annual Senior Recognition Event
and honored a Teacher and a Student of the Year with a special award.
winner gets a $1,000 scholarship and a marble paperweight inscribed with their name as
"Student of the Year."
The Foundation's Board of Directors selects the Teacher of the Year award from the
talented educators who have been nominated. Anyone can nominate a deserving teacher
to be recognized. One of the Foundation's endowment scholarships is named for the
winning instructor that year, and the winner receives a crystal paperweight inscribed
with their name as "Teacher of the Year."
The winners' names are added to the recognition plaques in Central's courtyard, one to
honor the Teacher of the Year, one for the Student of the Year. Below is a list of our
fabulous award recipients:
Students nominate themselves for the Student of the Year award by completing the
Foundation's nomination form. They list their accomplishments, activities inside and
outside of school, and also submit an essay. All personal information is removed from
the forms, and they are distributed to the Foundation's Board of Directors, who vote for
their top six choices. The six nominations receiving the most votes are then passed
along to the Foundation's Board of Counselors, who make the final decision. The

Alums Create Appeal for Marian
Mortensen Speech & Debate Fund
In Honor of a Life Well-Lived
The idea for a special appeal honoring Central speech and debate instructor Marian
Mortensen was conceived by alum Peter Weil '51.
Mona, as she was known, was a caring mother and a great friend to anyone in need.
Ramona was involved with drama at Central and graduated in 1965. She later attended
the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. Ramona often reminisced about the wonderful
years she spent at Central High, and her friendships that lasted long after graduation.
She loved visiting with old friends, and returned to Omaha often. She was especially
close to her older sister Catherine, aka Bobbie Byers '59.
"A couple of years ago I was reviewing the CHS Foundation annual report, which listed
various departments at Central and the dollars needed to run their programs," he said.
"After Speech & Debate it said only 'all contributions will help.'"
Weil had enjoyed participating in speech and debate activities throughout high school,
and had especially appreciated the coaching efforts of a young teacher named Marian
Mortensen.
"She was a great teacher, and there was a real camaraderie in our debate squad circle. I
made good friends," he said. "The idea of the fundraising letter seemed like a way to
remember Marian Mortensen, help the school, and get in contact with people again."
With his friend Karen McKie Prevetti Kersten '52, Weil scoured O Books and
contacted the CHS Foundation to establish a mailing list for the appeal. In March 2003,
the two co-signed a letter that generated a 40 percent response rate - and $7,350 to
benefit Central's Speech & Debate Department. The funds have been used this past year
to help send Central students to
national competitions in Boston
and Washington, D.C.
Due to its success, a second
Marian Mortensen Speech &
Debate Fund letter has been sent
this summer. Funds raised through
this appeal will help send students
to state and national events during
the 2004-05 school year.
The Ramona Byers Sanders (‘65) Memorial Scholarship is in honor of a woman who
possessed spirit and personality, and dedicated her life to the service of others.
Ramona married Rob Sanders in Omaha in 1967. She and her husband spent several
years living in Guatemala and Honduras. After their return to the United States,
Ramona earned a Masters Degree in counseling from Kansas State University. While in
Kansas, she served as secretary of the local NAACP. Ramona and Rob had two
daughters, Sarah Katherine and Elizabeth Rudbeck. The family moved to Jacksonville,
Florida, in 2001.
Ramona died somewhat unexpectedly, on October 15, 2003, after a brief illness. She
possessed the rare combination of great physical beauty along with a unique and radiant
personality. She will be long remembered by those whose lives she touched.
Remembering Ramona’s love of drama while at Central, and recognizing that her sister
is an actress and her brother is a theatrical sound engineer, the anonymous donor of the
Ramona Byers Sanders Memorial Scholarship has stipulated that the scholarship go to a
CHS senior involved with drama, whether on stage or on the stage crew. The
Scholarship was established this last year, and the first recipient was Jason Nehrig ‘04.
On July 10, 2004, three members of the 1950-51 CHS debate team met in Ann
Arbor, Michigan, for a picnic. They recounted old triumphs as well as a few of
their narrow defeats and "resolved" to meet again next year with a larger group of
the team. There was no debate on that subject. Pictured at the left, from left to
right are Jerry Brodkey '51, Karen McKie Kersten '52, and Joe Armstrong '51.
Planning Ahead for Central’s Future
There are many ways to give to the Central High School Foundation, now or in your estate plan. You may wish to consider one of the following options:
Bequests: For many donors, making a gift through your estate is the most
realistic way to provide a substantial contribution to the CHS Foundation.
Gifts of Real Estate: You can make a gift of commercial or residential real estate
to the CHS Foundation and receive substantial financial benefits.
Gifts of Insurance/Retirement: You can amend an existing insurance policy or
retirement plan to name the CHS Foundation as one of your beneficiaries.
Charitable Gift Annuity: A gift annuity is a contract between the donor and the
CHS Foundation that provides the donor a guaranteed payment for life and a
charitable income tax deduction. Deferred gift annuities are also available.
Appreciated Securities: Your outright gift of long-term, appreciated securities
(stocks, mutual funds and bonds) is exempt from capital gains taxes.
8
Charitable Remainder Trust: A charitable remainder trust provides a lifetime
income and a charitable income tax deduction.
For more information, please contact your financial planner, lawyer or the Central High School Foundation office at 402.556.2828.
