“I AM THE LIVING BREAD THAT CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN”
In the past, we have talked about the rich symbolism of this day, manifested
with two signs: the blood and the covenant. Now I want to share with you the
twofold intention of this Solemnity. First, it was intended to bring focus on the
Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Second, it was to focus on the Real
Presence of Jesus in the world. When we track the history of this devotion to the Blessed
Sacrament we can clearly see that the real bread from heaven has received love and honor.
For several centuries, the early Church understood that the Real Presence was in the People
of God, in their brothers and sisters. It was for this reason that St. Paul urged the early
Christians to leave behind their former ways of life and
enter into an entirely new life style. We must not forget
that the unleavened bread of the Eucharist is a
powerful sign of poor man’s food and through our
breaking and sharing of it there is a call to us to be on
the side of those who are in need. The Eucharistic
gathering is a mirror of the solidarity, compassion, and
common effort that is intended in God’s call to us to be
a person at the service of others.
Just as God is on the side of the poor and oppressed, so
too must we be on their side. Full communion with God and others is incompatible with any
sort of injustice, exploitation, and prejudice or bullying. So, having received the and renew
the transformation of the world we live in. Sometimes, political standards raise the bar above
our own moral or Christian values. Professional, wealthy, cultural or social background
determine our relationships, but it should not be this way for Christians…the stranger and
the poor, the sick and the wise, the religious and the worker, all must overcome our differences
to become one at the Lord’s Table.
Many of us, when we think about the Body and Blood of Christ, we only think about the
consecrated bread and wine. And on one level, our thought is true; however, if our experience
stops with this understanding and goes no further, then we miss something that is most
significant; the need to love our neighbor. It is true, that the consecrated bread and wine are
the Body and Blood of Jesus, but equally important, so are we and our neighbors.

have been working on the Diocese
of Trenton's "Faith to Move
Mountains" campaign. There have been some
changes since the last report. With your help, as of
May 31, 2017 we have received $75,096.70 to bring
the total in pledges to $458,973.30.

118. Remember that this is a sacrificial offering and
we look forward for your help. If you have already

you that God will multiply it.

YO SOY EL PAN VIVO QUE NACIÓ DESDE EL CIELO"
En los últimos años, les hablé sobre lo que simboliza este día, manifestado con
dos signos: la sangre y el pacto. Ahora quiero compartir con ustedes el doble
propósito de esta solemnidad. En primer lugar, se pretendía centrarse en la
Presencia Real de Jesús en la Eucaristía, y segundo, se centra en la Presencia
Real de Jesús en el mundo. Cuando trazamos la historia de la devoción al
Santísimo Sacramento podemos percibir el amor y devoción que el verdadero pan del cielo
ha recibido.
Durante varios siglos, la Iglesia primitiva comprendió que la Presencia Real estaba en el
Pueblo de Dios, en sus hermanos y hermanas. Fue por esta razón que San Pablo le instó a los
primeros cristianos a dejar atrás su antigua forma de vida y entrar en una vida
completamente nueva.
No debemos olvidar que el pan sin levadura en la Eucaristía es un signo poderoso de la
comida del pobre, y al partirlo y compartirlo estamos simbolizando el llamado a estar al lado
de los necesitados. La Eucaristía es un espejo de la solidaridad, la compasión y el esfuerzo en
común a entender el llamado de Dios para ser una persona al
servicio de los demás.
Así como Dios está del lado de los pobres y oprimidos, también
debemos estar nosotros de ese lado. La plena comunión con Dios
y con los demás es incompatible con cualquier tipo de
injusticia, explotación, prejuicio o intimidación. Así que,
habiendo recibido el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo durante la
Eucaristía, debemos salir de misa renovados para transformar
el mundo en que vivimos. Muchas veces, los estándares políticos elevan la barra por encima
de nuestros propios valores morales o cristianos. Nuestras profesiones, dinero, cultura, estilo
social determinan nuestras relaciones, pero no debe ser así para los cristianos... Los ricos, los
pobres, los enfermos y los sabios, así como los religiosos y los obreros debemos superar las
diferencias para convertirnos en uno solo en la mesa del Señor.
Muchos de nosotros, cuando pensamos en el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo sólo pensamos en el
pan y el vino consagrados, y en cierto modo, nuestro pensamiento es verdadero. Sin embargo,
si nuestra experiencia se detiene con esta comprensión y no va más allá, entonces perdemos
algo que es más significativo, la necesidad de amar a nuestro prójimo. Es cierto, que el pan y
el vino consagrados son el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Jesús, pero igualmente importantes somos
nosotros y nuestro prójimo.

Reflexion sobre la Lectura de la Segunda Sesion
(Lucas 24, 17-20)
En la primera sesión vimos como Jesús primereó a los discípulos uniéndose a su caminar hacia
Emaús. En esta segunda sesión nos concentramos en cómo Jesús se involucra en la vida de los discípulos
preguntándoles sobre lo que van hablando. Esta acción de Jesús es una de las más sorprendentes en este
pasaje. Jesús sabe muy bien lo que ha pasado en Jerusalén, y está muy consciente de la situación difícil
que aflige a sus discípulos.
Este gesto tan sorprendente de Jesús, el de preguntar primero y volver a preguntar, es un aspecto
muy importante en la metodología del V Encuentro. El encuentro con los demás, sobre todo con personas
que pasan por momentos muy difíciles, debe iniciarse preguntándoles sobre sus vidas, sus preocupaciones,
sus esperanzas, sus ideas, sus necesidades, sus sueños. Esto les permite que hablen de su realidad desde
su perspectiva, que compartan su experiencia, sus sentimientos, sus ideas. Escuchar profundamente crea
un espacio de confianza y seguridad que permite saciar su sed de desahogarse.

Reflection on Scripture (Luke 24:17-20) Session 2
In the first session we saw how Jesus took the initiative toward his disciples by
joining them along the way to Emmaus. In this second section, we focus on how Jesus
gets involved in the life of the disciples asking them about their conversation. This
action by Jesus is one of the most surprising in this passage. Jesus knows full well what
happened in Jerusalem, and he is very much aware of the diƥcult situation aƫicting his disciples. Why,
then, does Jesus ask the disciples what they are talking about along the way, as if he himself did not know
the answer?
This very surprising gesture by Jesus, asking first, and then asking again, is a very important aspect
of the methodology of the V Encuentro. The encounter with others, particularly with people who are going
through diƥcult moments, must start by asking about their lives, concerns, hopes, ideas, needs, and
dreams. This also allows them to speak about their reality from their own perspective, to share their
experiences, their feelings, their ideas. To listen deeply creates a space of trust and safety that allows
people to quench their thirst and unload their burdens.

The International Centennial Pilgrim Statue of Our
Lady of Fatima, which was blessed by Pope Francis,
will be at St. Anthony Church on Olden Avenue in
Hamilton, NJ on Monday, June 26, 2017 at 7 PM.

and that devotion will bring a period of great peace
