CAPTAIN’S CORNER
Last Sunday the weather and course were great and
the teams hit off with any one of six able to take out
the Championship with a low score.
The current holders again scored well on the first 9
but fell away with an 81. Saad/Jansson went out
slowly but came home with a 37 on the back 9 to
card 78 (165 total). However 2014 champions
Browne/Brown after a slow start had 3 birdies on
the back 9 to record 78 (162 total) and take the
trophy. This added to Jenni’s Women’s Foursome
Championship.

Game 3 and the ‘old boys’ take the lengthy drive to
Bankstown, which was in good condition, providing
a challenging layout.
We knew it would be our most difficult challenge as
they had not been beaten at home for 7 years.
After 9 we were ahead in 2, square in 2 and down in
4 – oh dear. Later 5 matches had been decided and
we were down 3 matches to 1 ½ - oh ‘bloody’ dear.
The remaining 3 matches go to the 18th. Fish at #7
is 1 up and wins the 18th for a LR win. Dwane then
hits a poor tee shot but recovers well to win 1up, so
we lead 3 ½ to 3. John was square and a half would
give us the win, but a lost hole and we lose… the
Captain gains more grey hair. But he came through
winning the 18th for a 4 ½ to 3 win.
We now play 3 home games with still a lot of work
to do, but are in a good position.
We play Muirfield on Sunday at 11 am, love to see
some support.

Mick Snell Cup
On a bitterly cold morning Amos Hessel & Andy
Elysee teed off in the final of the Cup.
Amos gave Andy 8 shots, one on every even hole
except 18. Both players were nervous but started
with solid pars. Andy made a great save on 2, a net
birdie to go 1 up. This became the pattern for the
match with Andy playing the even holes well, taking
advantage of his handicap, to record net birdies on
8, 12, 14 & 16. Amos fought well but was always
playing ‘catch up’. Andy’s net 3 on 16 gave him a 2
up lead but once again Amos came back on 17 with
a gutsy par to take match down 18. Both were on in
2 and Amos just missed his birdie, but it was all over
when Andy rolled hid birdie put in for a 2up win..
Congratulations to both players with the match
always close and played in a true spirit of friendship
and sportsmanship.

Score Card Return - Condition
 Score cards must be scanned at the ‘Kiosk’ in
the Clubhouse within 10 minutes of the last
group of the day finishing their round.
 Player is responsible to check the score on the
Kiosk Screen is correct and matches the written
score, then ‘Saves Score’ on the Screen.
 If two different scores are recorded for the same
hole (eg the number ‘5’ box is crossed (X) but a
‘4’ has been written down) the higher score will
count. (If only a number is recorded, or only a
box is crossed, that number or box cross will be
the score to count).
 Other requirements as per Rule 6-6 apply.
With winter now here please ensure you
get on with the game.. In the morning if
you hit off on the 1st it should take you a
maximum 1h 50m to get to the 9th tee and
off the 9th 2h 10m to the 1st tee = 4hrs.
This allows the afternoon players to hit
off on time and finish before dark.

RULES WITH GEORGE
QUESTION Audrey had hit her ball on the 9th
hole from the tee and it had gone right and ended
just over the margin and into the lateral water
hazard. The ball was lying on grass in the hazard
and she thought that she could play it. While she
was waiting to play, Audrey leaned on her her club
on the grass just inside the boundary of the hazard.
When it was her turn to play, Audrey took her
stance without grounding her club and played her
ball successfully up the fairway.
Which of the following is correct?
a. Audrey has now played two strokes.
b. Audrey has now played four strokes, having
incurred two strokes penalty for touching the
ground in the water hazard (Rule 13-4b) .
FROM THE WOMEN
Great to see everyone out and braving the cooler
weather.
In Pennants this week it’s great news. Silver 2 had a
superb 3.5 to 1.5 win over Cromer. All the hard
work is coming to fruition. They are hosting this
week at Long Reef.
In Bronze 2 they also had a fine win over Warringah
3/2 and will head out to play Manly at Warringah
looking for a similar result.
The Bronze 1 team start their season at Wakehurst
this week against Asquith. Thank you to Kim Sloane
for convening this team. Playing this week are Clare
John (F/C), Elaine Coldham, Julie Preston, Marg
O’Connell, Muriel Dawson and Gaye McCorby is
reserve.
We wish them all very good golf – and fine weather!
Tuesday this week saw our women members tee up
for charity to support the ladies from Mona Vale
Hospital Auxiliary. We had visiting teams from
neighbouring clubs who were among the winners.
Thank you to those who were unable to play but still
donated their entry money to the day.
The final amount will be tallied and communicated
shortly.
A new Swingers Golf Group will start next Tuesday
7th June at 10am. If anyone knows of people who
are keen to learn the game in a small supervised
team please contact Pam Burke, Sandy Christey or
myself.
It was great to have a couple of the established
swingers play in groups on Charity Day. A great
Introduction to competition golf and they just
happened to be in the winners’ circle! Well done Di,
Robyn and Gaye.

FROM THE ARCHIVES
What if?
What if C.H. Martin had not written to the
Warringah Council in September 1920
proposing, on behalf of golfing friends, that part
of Long Reef headland be used as a golf club?
Would we now drive by an exclusive housing estate,
a camping and caravan park, a restaurant strip on
Fisherman’s Beach, or sit around a pond with an
ornamental garden in boggy soil near huge sand
dunes. All of the above were suggestions by
individuals, groups and the new council itself.
It may be that in 1920 the Council were happy to
consider the idea of a Golf Club to satisfy pressure
put on them by the State to use the land fully and
wisely. It could also be that simply the speed of
acceptance shows that the councilors wanted to
play golf too! Remember that Manly was the only
course on the Peninsula at that time, and that
Collaroy and Long Reef were very popular
recreation and holiday home areas.
So the story goes that Mr C.H. Martin wrote to the
Council and from 1920 was never heard from again.
Well, our early research shows that it couldn’t be as
simple as that and we now know a little more about
him.
Cecil Herbert Martin was born in 1882 in Orange
NSW. His parents were born in NSW, and his
grandparents came from Cornwall in England. In
1920 he was living in Brookvale at the time of
writing the letter. He was a teacher, but as yet we
don’t know which school he worked at. In 1913 he
had been at Burrangang School, NSW. Also it is still
to be determined as to why he didn’t attend the early
meetings or join the club just 8 months later after
the first letter was written.
The Minutes of 20th September 1920 Warringah
Council Meeting say that a letter was received from
Mr C.H. Martin dated the 2/9/20. The request was
considered and it was resolved that Mr Martin be
invited to address the Council on the subject at the
next meeting.
Mr Martin accepted the invitation to speak and
attended at the 5th October 1920 Meeting. The
Minutes say “Griffith Park Golf Links. By invitation of the
Council, Mr C.H. Martin addressed it in
support of the application for the establishment
of golf links in Griffith Park. Resolved - (Crs.
Sterland & Greenwood) That permission be
granted for a period of two years, subject to the
selected site and the rules of the Club being
satisfactory to the council, and the Lands
Department raising no objection. (Councillor
Campbell alone dissented the motion.)”
Mr Martin was persuasive, and one of his arguments
was that the district needed a Golf Club “to cater
for players in a more democratic spirit than the
Manly Club.” * Also the offer that the Club would
be responsible for the area used and put down and
create the holes themselves must have appealed to
the council.
By the end of December the council had heard back
from the Lands Department and Mr Martin was
informed that approval was given. The first step in
the Club’s history was complete.
The Electoral Roles tell us that Cecil lived and
worked in Burwood throughout the 30’s and 40’s.
His wife came from Burwood; her name was
Henrietta Victoria. They had one son. His last
teaching position was in Franklin, Tasmania. Sadly
we know little about his death. By 1953 he was a
widower and died in July that year at the age of 71,
as the result of an accident. He was knocked down
by a car on the Midlands Highway and died in the
Royal Hobart Hospital.
There is satisfaction in being able to acknowledge
and belatedly thank Cecil for the part he played in
developing such an important area as Griffith Park
and the Golf Course in particular.

RULES WITH GEORGE
ANSWER: b. is correct. A player is not permitted
to touch the ground in a hazard before making a
stroke at a ball in the hazard (Rule 13-4b ). Ground
in a hazard would include such things as dirt, sand,
embedded stones to name a few. The Note to Rule
13-4 does in fact allow a player at any time including
at address, to touch with a club or otherwise any
obstruction, construction declared by the
Committee to be an integral part of the course or
any grass, bush, tree or other growing thing. It
would appear that Audrey has not incurred a penalty
for resting her club on the grass, but Decision134/8 defining “When Club Touches Ground in
Grass in a Water Hazard?” gives as the answer
“When the grass is compressed to the point where it
will support the weight of the club” .
The Note to Rule 13-4 allows a player to ground a
club on a bridge across a water hazard because a
bridge is an obstruction and is not " ground" in the
hazard...Decision 13-4/30 applies. Decision 134/4 allows touching long grass in a hazard during a
practice swing while a ball is in the hazard
