Bridging the Gap
Measures Length
The introduction of the new National Curriculum in September 2015 means that a huge gap has opened up between
the skills needed to master P8 and those needed to complete Year 1 in Mathematics.
Six Birmingham Special Schools have worked together, funded by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching
of Mathematics (NCEMT), to look at ways of helping teachers to bridge this gap. It is expected to be useful to both
SEN and Mainstream schools.
This document tracks back to provide information on key steps that were previously covered using the old NC levels.

Year 1
Measures- Length
 compare, describe and solve practical problems for: lengths and heights [for example, long/short, longer/shorter, tall/short, double/half]
measure and begin to record the following: lengths and heights

Objectives
BTG
 Pupils begin to use
standard units of
length to measure
and compare objects
 They are beginning
to make simple
measurements of
length, becoming
familiar with using
standard units of
measurement

Possible Teaching Activities /Outcomes
 Measure and draw lines of different lengths with a ruler
 Given 2 lengths of string/ lines measure and find the difference between them.
 Use wool to measure and compare circumference of heads of variety of adults
and children
 Use trundle wheel to measure length in playground / around school
 Use foot measure and record – compare sizes
 Measure and compare heights, handspans etc
 Use the outdoors – measure and compare leaves, sticks etc
 Throwing beanbags, long jump, throw javelin etc – measure and compare
distance thrown
 Measure 3 lengths to within 1 cms and record
 Measure and draw lines etc that have a regular length – 1cm gradients
 Measure measuring worms
 Throwing beanbags, long jump, throw javelin etc – measure distance thrown
with support

Measuring worms
 They suggest
suitable units and
measuring
equipment to
estimate and
measure a length
 They compare two
lengths, by direct
comparison
2C
 They measure and
order more than two
objects by length
using direct
comparison.
1B
 They use everyday
vocabulary for
properties
 They order objects
1C
1A
 Measuring using cut out handprints, footprints, cubes
 Concrete objects to be matched to suitable measuring equipment e.g fruit,
bricks, milk, clothes, drink can, books– match to either scales, jug , ruler
 Measure objects using multilink/unifix cubes

Measuring worms
Indicate whether a child’s scarf or an adult’s scarf is longer
Compare the height of two pupils and indicate who is taller
Compare the sizes of two shoes and indicate which is larger / smaller
Indicate which of two pieces of string is longer / shorter
Rolling cars down a slope and comparing how far they roll.
Given an object find something longer or shorter/ bigger or smaller than
How many steps to measure 2 different areas e.g playground & classroom
Given 3 objects of different lengths measure and put in order from longest to
shortest / biggest to smallest.
 Order with lots of different concrete objects e.g socks, trousers, scarves, toy and
real cups & plates
 Order set of Russian stacking dolls
 Find big and small / long and short/ tall and short objects on request
 Order 3 objects by size
 Collect leaves or sticks and order by size
