Common questions from new families
Why does my child cry when I try to leave him/her in the morning?
It is normal for children to experience anxiety when a parent leaves, especially when they are in a new
environment. The longer you stay and try to console them, the harder it will be the following day, because
the child will learn that he/she can control you by dragging out his/her emotional meltdown.
Our suggestion: Tell your child, in advance, that you will be giving him one big hug and kiss at the classroom
door and remind him/her that you WILL be back soon. Then, even if he/she is crying, leave your child in the
care of our very capable staff and we promise to give him/her the best care possible until you return.
Although you may feel like you are abandoning your child, you are actually teaching him /her to be more
independent, which builds self-esteem. Keep in mind, you can call and check on your child as many times as
you like.
Why doesn’t my child want to leave when I come to pick him/her up?
It is normal for a child (especially those who are very social or those who have no siblings) to want to stay in a
lively, child-friendly environment because they are regularly stimulated with a variety of activities geared
specifically toward their age group. At home, they are frequently forced to adapt to an “adult world” and/or
entertain themselves. Therefore, if it becomes a battle to get your child to leave each day, it may be
necessary to implement consequences and/or rewards.
Our suggestion: Tell your child in advance that when you come to pick them up, it will be time to leave. Tell
them that they will have time to say good-bye to friends (this will help them “shut down” in the event that
they are involved in something exciting) and then explain what the consequence will be if they do not
cooperate (i.e. No cookie after dinner, No television, etc). Be sure to follow through with the consequence,
even if they cry or promise you they will do better next time. Then, if they cooperate all week, reward them
with a milkshake or a trip to the dollar store for a “special” price.
Where can I find a nap mat?
Wal-Mart sells red/blue plastic mats that are perfect for rest time. (They must be plastic so that we can spray
them with cleaning solution each day.) However, Wal-Mart only sells them during their “Back to School”
season. If you need one in the middle of the school year, we can order one out of a catalog or you can
purchase one from Educational Wonderland on Broad River Road in Columbia. Their mats are more
expensive, but they come with a two year warranty.
What should I send for lunch?
Try to send a balanced meal that includes the following:
• Meat or beans (Ex: Ham/Turkey Sandwich, Bean burrito, chicken nuggets, 100% beef/turkey hotdog)

We start our day with a song called “¿Cómo Están Ustedes?” which means “How are you?”
Then, we say our pledge to the flag in both English and Spanish.
The last thing we do before entering the classroom for our lesson is say a prayer that is traditional in many
Spanish-speaking countries.
Pledge of Allegiance
El juramento
I pledge allegiance to the flag
Yo juro fidelidad a la bandera
of the United States of America
de los Estados Unidos de América
and to the republic for which it stands,
y a la república que representa
one nation, under God, indivisible
una nación, al amparo de Dios, indivisible
with liberty and justice for all.
con libertad y justicia para todos.
Morning Prayer (Translation)
La oración de la mañana
Guardian angel, sweet company,
Ángel de mi guarda, dulce compañía,
don’t leave me during the night nor during the day,
no me desampares ni de noche ni de día,
until you place me in peace and happiness
hasta que me pongas en paz y alegría
with all the saints, Jesus, Joseph, and Mary.
Con todos los santos, Jesús, José, y María.
Amen.
Amen.
