Business Continuity Planning
During the Randolph County strategic planning process it was identified that the
County needed to improve countywide business continuity planning to keep the County’s functions operational during an impact to normal operations. As a result, strategies
were developed and a Business Continuity Team was created. The Business Continuity
Team is guiding us through the process of creating a comprehensive countywide plan.
All departments have submitted function lists describing business operations and service areas. The criticality of each function was identified based on specific criteria and
has been reviewed by the implementation team.
What is a business continuity plan? Where would
you work and how would you continue to serve citizens
if your building had a fire?
A Business Continuity Plan is a complete, comprehensive and living document that establishes the processes and procedures required to keep our County
Government running during a period of displacement
or interruption of normal operation. It is important for
all Randolph County elected officials, County management designees and citizens to
know Randolph County Government has a Business Continuity Plan.
Next, the Implementation Team will be focusing on the business impact analysis and
may be asking for your assistance.

May is Internal Audit Awareness Month
What is Internal Auditing?
Many of you have seen me in your departments and may not
know who I am. My name is Lori Wright, and I am the Internal
Auditor for Randolph County, recently celebra ng my one-year
anniversary. In January, I received my Cer fied Fraud Examiner
license. Here at the County, my job entails the following:
Advisory Services
Performance Measures
Best Prac ce for Process and Procedures
Business Con nuity Planning
Audit Departments and Service Areas
Compliance Monitoring
Fraud Awareness
Iden fy Risk
Five Classic Myths
About Internal Auditing
Myth #1: Internal auditors are accountant by training.
Lori:
“I understand the importance each function serves in an organization. In order to best serve Randolph County and our
citizens, it is important to have knowledge in Accounting but also to understand our culture and to build relationships.”
Myth #2: Auditors are nit-pickers and fault finders.
Lori: “Honestly, I enjoy the details to any process. However, I like a more collaborative approach. I make it a mission not to
have a ‘one-size fits all approach’ to a process or procedure. Each department and service area are very different. My
focus is identifying major or potentially major risks and advising on how to correct an error without pointing fingers.”
Myth #3: It’s best not to tell the auditors anything unless they specifically ask.
Lori: “To me, it is all about ‘Intent.’ Everyone makes mistakes. My job is to help provide insight on best practices and to help
mitigate further mistakes/risks.
Myth #4: Internal auditors follow a cycle in selecting their audit “targets” and use standard checklists so they
can audit the same things the same way each time.
Lori: “I have to admit, I LOVE Checklists! However, each time that I help a department, I find that my checklist or process
changes a bit. Culture in a department plays a big part in having to adapt to meet the needs of that department.”
Myth #5: Internal audit is the corporate “police function.”
Lori:
“In Randolph County, we recognize that there may be a time where we have to perform audit/monitoring services. How
ever, I am here to be an asset/extension to each department providing advisory services and best practices for process
and procedures.”

Cool Movies You Might’ve Missed
Aimee Scotton-Resident Movie Reviewer/Aficionado
This is typically one of my lighter movie reviews of the year. After all, it encompasses January,
February and March, the dreaded post-Oscar slump. This year is no real exception—one of the
movies I’ve reviewed, I caught at the $2 theater (I think it’s currently available at Redbox).
Passengers
So how adventurous are you? Suppose, you could travel from earth to
another (distant) planet that needed colonizing, and that said travel would
take 120 years, years that you’d pass in blissful slumber? Would you chance
it? You could be part of a whole new world—space, the final frontier, and all
that jazz. Now suppose that the ship making this journey has a malfunction
in its sleep chambers that results in two passengers being awakened 90 years
too soon. 90 years. Let that sink in for a minute. 90 years is a long time—so
long, in fact, that if you woke up 90 years early, odds are you’re gonna die on
that ship without ever seeing the promised land. This is the premise of Passengers, a science fiction film starring Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence.
I’m not going to go into details about the plot. I went into it knowing nothing other than what I’d seen in the trailer, and that’s a good thing. There
were a few twists that made the story much deeper and presented some interesting moral questions. The story is interesting and thought-provoking and well-acted. It’s not as much of an action film as the trailer led me to believe, but I didn’t mind that so much. If you can just accept
the film for what it is (and don’t question the science to death), it’s a decent little movie. There’s
at least one moment that did make me say—OK, that couldn’t happen—but that’s pretty good for
a sci-fi flick. It’s available at the Redbox now. Check it out. I think you might like it.
Get Out
Here’s another one that I liked. This is the story of a young African American man who is dating a young white woman. She’s taking him home to meet
her parents. Naturally, he’s apprehensive—particularly since she hasn’t told her
parents that he’s black. Turns out, he has every reason to be apprehensive.
This is not Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner. This is one creepy (and often funny) horror movie. It’s also a very clever social commentary on race and marginalization. I don’t want to go into too many details since I don’t want to ruin the
twists and turns for you. It stars Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams as the
young couple and Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener as her parents. I
thought it was fantastic. Can’t recommend it enough.
13
Kong: Skull Island
In case you don’t get the gist from the title, this movie takes place on Skull Island, an uncharted island in the Pacific that is home to many very-large creatures, but that is ruled by one,
that giant cinematic ape, Kong. In this film, a group of scientists (with a military escort) go to
Skull Island to see what they can see. And, boy, do they ever! Now in reviewing this, I want to say
something that should go without saying. This movie is not going to get nominated for any Oscars; it’s not going to win any writing awards; it’s not going to win any acting awards (despite featuring some really good actors—Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Samuel L. Jackson,
John C. Reilly). That being said, it’s a lot of fun. It’s also a film that really
needs to be seen in the theater for full enjoyment. I mean, it’s a special effects
vehicle—big monsters fighting big monsters and human folk just trying to survive long enough to get off the island. The characters are stereotypes and onedimensional, but the quality of the acting helps. So does the spectacle of the
big screen. I think a lot of its charm would be diminished if you tried watching
it in your living room. So if you’re looking for a fun, summer popcorn movie
that you can watch and enjoy and then never have to think about again, this
might be the movie for you. And I’d like to add that it is a MILLION times better than that King Kong movie from Peter Jackson (the one with Adrien Brody
and Jack Black and Naomi Watts). That move was crazy-long and you were
waaaayyy into it before you even saw Kong. This movie gets right to it.
Logan
It’s finally here, the third and final film in the Wolverine trilogy. Before I get into this movie
in particular, let me tell you how I’ve felt about this trilogy so far. The first film (X Men Origins:
Wolverine) was OK—not great, but OK. The second film (The Wolverine) was long—at least, it felt
long—and boring. How you gonna make Wolverine boring? They found a way. And both films
were just dismal. So I was not particularly enthusiastic about seeing Logan. I expected just more of the same. I was pleasantly surprised.
Don’t get me wrong, Logan is not a happy movie. Wolverine is not a
happy character and this film starts with him at his most unhappy. He’s
hiding from the world, working as a limo driver, when a young mutant
shows up needing help. If you’ve seen the trailer, you know that this is a
young girl with incredible powers who is being pursued by dark forces.
It’s a road trip action movie with mutants. There’s plenty of action and
the relationship between Logan and the girl gives the film plenty of
heart. And for you film buffs, pay special attention to the movie that
Professor X is watching on television; it’s an old film that parallels the
story of this movie perfectly. If you’re an X-Men fan, go see this one. It’s
easily the best of the Wolverine trilogy.
We’re about to get into the big budget movie season—the Memorial Day to Independence Day plethora of action movies. There are lots of interesting films on the horizon—
The Fate of the Furious, Wonder Woman, Dunkirk, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2, King
Arthur, and many more, so Happy Viewing!
