Presenting her Demonstration at the Big E. Carolee Longley, 4-H Volunteer / Big E Chaperone, write’s about Amie Weagle doing her demonstration at the Big E: “What an amazing girl she is!!! Hard to believe she is only 12 - hopefully we will see her again at the Big E!! Her knowledge of Hippology clearly came across and was very impressive! She was nervous at first and she worked so hard to overcome that and she truly did a TREMENDOUS job!! We were so proud of her!!!” Jessie Hooker of Silver Snaffles 4-H Club (Maidstone, VT) with her winning sheep. Dan Call of Animal & Craft Adventures 4-H Club (Whitefield, NH). Team Leader at the Big E. Daniel Call represented Coös County as one of four NH Horse ‘Team Leaders’ at Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dan was at the Big E from Wednesday, September 18 Sunday, the 22nd. As a team leader Dan’s job was to help the 17 NH riders take care of their horses, get ready for shows and help keep things in order for the NH Horse team. Dan also had the opportunity to participate in the Horse quiz bowl and a fitting & show halter class with a horse from Merrimack County. Dan says he had a good experience, lots of fun and would do it again. Jessie Hooker went to Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, MA from September 27-29 to compete on the New Hampshire Sheep Team along with two other 4-H’ers from NH. The delegates arrived Friday morning and had to compete in a skill-a-thon Friday afternoon. Breed classes started Saturday morning. Jessie and her market lamb, Latte, won 2nd in the market lamb class. Her Tunis ram lamb, Goliath, won 1st for his age group and also won overall Tunis ram champion and champion bred and owned. Jessie's Tunis yearling ewe, Mary Anne, and ewe lamb, Shirley, also won 1st in their age groups, the yearling won champion overall Tunis ewe and the lamb won bred and owned champion Tunis. Saturday afternoon Jessie won 3rd in the leadline class. New Hampshire's block and trim team of Jessie and Amanda Towne of Lempster, NH, won 3rd out of 16 teams this year. In Sunday's fitting and show class Jessie took 5th out of 12. New Hampshire came in 3rd in the quiz bowl. NH also came in 3rd this year for overall Herdsman. Jessie won the NH state shepherds crook. This award was voted on by all other delegates from the attending states for the 2013 Big E 4-H sheep show. Congratulations Jessie! Congratulations to the LION CUBS 4-H CLUB of Stratford, NH for being the first 4-H club in New Hampshire to complete the 2012-13 “Healthy 4-H Club Challenge”! Pierre Allard, 4-H Member from Pittsburg, NH with his bred and owned Simmental Heifer, Berretta New Hampshire makes history at The Big E. Sixteen youth from six NH counties competed to be the first New Hampshire Beef Team in over 50 years to win the “Overall Sweepstake Award” at Eastern States in Springfield, MA. Each year seven states including Dutchess County, NY choose delegates that will represent their state competing in contests that display knowledge of all aspects of the beef production industry. Pierre Allard of Coös County was a delegate on the NH beef team, with his bred and owned Simmental Heifer, Berretta. New Hampshire’s Beef Team did very well, coming home with some big wins including three Champions and two Reserve in the five breed shows, as well as overall Champion and Reserve. TOM GILL MEMORIAL AWARDS The Berlin Kiwanis Club invites the winners of the Tom Gill Memorial Gardening Program to an awards dinner every year. This year the winners and their families were honored at the Kiwanis meeting on Tuesday, October 29, at The Northland Dairy Bar in Berlin. Great placing in Educational Exhibits, Beef CookOff, Posters, Logo’s and Memorial Sweepstakes Awards, all contributed points to the “Overall Sweepstakes Award”. The highlight of the Big E for the Beef Teams is the steers which cumulates in the auction. This is the backbone of the beef team. This gives the kids the ability to earn the dollar value of the project which will enable them to reinvest in a project for next year. Re-enrollment Process: Re-enrollment packets have been mailed. They include forms with every current member and leader enrolled in your club. Along with additional forms for new members and new leader applications. We ask that each leader, member and member’s parent/guardian review their information, make any necessary changes, sign and return to your club leader. Each club will then return the packets to the office to be updated and re-enrolled. The deadline for re-enrollments is November 2. OPPORTUNITIES: Take the Healthy NH 4-H Club Challenge Join now! The National Youth Summit is a series of national conferences for high school students, both 4-H'ers and non 4-H'ers. Participating students advance their skills in specific subject areas, visit related organizations in D.C., meet and interact with mentors, and explore potential career opportunities. All students and their adult chaperones will prepare to become Champions of Agri-Science, Robotics or Healthy Living, and will be taught how to re-teach this material to their peers and their community.
