to become
fossil fuel-free
by 2020
Region Skåne aims to be entirely free
of fossil fuels in transportation and energy
use in 2020. In June 2009 the Regional
Council adopted an ambitious fuel strategy
which involves our going further in
our climate work than what is required
nationally in this area.
Region Skåne’s ambition is to reduce its emissions
of greenhouse gases and to become climate-neutral.
Under this strategy all vehicles used by Region Skåne’s
administrations will run on renewable fuels in 2020,
and all real estate owned or used by Region Skåne
(approximately 1,700,000 sq m) will be heated solely
by renewable fuels in 2020. This fuel strategy is an
important part of Region Skåne’s climate work.
Its activities involve a lot of properties and vehicles
and the strategy is an important step in the task of
achieving a climate-neutral organisation by 2020.
Renewable fuels
At the present time (2009) 45 per cent of the energy
(excluding electricity) used in Region Skåne’s properties
comes from renewable fuels. The overall objective is
to be entirely free of fossil fuels, with the following
targets:
• 60 per cent of heating will come from renewable
sources by 2012
• 80 per cent of heating will come from renewable
sources by 2016
From 1 July 2009 all the electricity used in Region
Skåne’s properties will be 100 per cent renewable and
environmentally labelled. 24 per cent of Region Skåne’s
transportation currently takes place with renewable
fuels. In order to achieve the objective of 100 per cent
renewable fuels in vehicles by 2020, the following
targets have been set:
• 50 per cent of all transportation will take place with
renewable fuels by 2012
• 75 per cent of all transportation will take place with
renewable fuels by 2016

Filling up with biogas
The fuel strategy includes investments in renewable
energy. Region Skåne strongly favours the use of biogas
from Skåne and other fuels produced there, such as
green diesel/rape methyl ester (RME). These fuels
are good from an environmental point of view; they
promote employment and provide security of supply.
Region Skåne is a large customer, able to take advantage
of the opportunities to be found in Skåne. The fact
that we use more biogas increases the demand, which
is necessary in order to extend production and the
number of filling stations.
Skånetrafiken’s environmental goal Public transport
free of fossil fuels contributes to the realisation of
Region Skåne’s fuel strategy. The aim is to have town
buses which do not run on fossil fuels in 2015,
regional buses in 2018 and light vehicles in 2020.
Region Skåne – one step ahead
In its fuel strategy Region Skåne goes one step further
than the national targets in this area, which state that
Sweden should have a vehicle fleet that is independent
of fossil fuels in 2030 and buildings that are heated
with non-fossil fuels in 2020.
At a time when governments and international
negotiators are discussing reductions of 20–40 per
cent, we at Region Skåne are pleased to note that our
emissions of about 60,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide
from the use of energy and transportation will
decrease by 100 per cent by the year 2020.
