LEARNING OUTCOME
4. Know the structure and function of the respiratory system
CONTENT
4. Know the structure and function of the respiratory system
Structure of the respiratory system: epiglottis; trachea; bronchus; bronchioles; alveoli; diaphragm; intercostal muscles
Function of the respiratory system: mechanics of breathing (inspiration and expiration); gaseous exchange (alveoli,
diffusion of oxygen into the blood, carbon dioxide out of the blood and into the lungs)
ASSESSMENT GUIDANCE
PASS
P6 – DESCRIBE the structure and function of the respiratory system
MERIT
M3 – EXPLAIN how the cardiovascular and respiratory system work together to supply
the body with oxygen.
DISTINCTION
D2 – EVALUATE how the cardiovascular system and respiratory system work together
to supply the body with oxygen and remove carbon dioxide.
SCENARIO
You are continuing your training to become a Health and Fitness Instructor and would like to learn more about
how the human body works. You understand that in this job it is important to have a knowledge and
understanding of the structure and function of the body systems.
The fourth and final section focuses on how we get oxygen into our body and get rid of carbon dioxide. We call
this the respiratory system. You are hoping to put all of your posters up in your gym so they need to be clear
and informative.
Your task is to produce the following:

Design a poster to DESCRIBE the structure and function of the respiratory system. Your poster must
include:
 A labelled picture of the respiratory system including the key terms in the content.
 A picture and description of how we breathe in (inspiration) and how we breathe out (expiration)
 A cross-section picture of an ‘Alveoli’ to show how gaseous exchange takes place.
 Answer the question: What is the key function of the respiratory system?
(P6)

Produce a report to EXPLAIN how the cardiovascular system and respiratory systems work together to
supply the body with oxygen.
(M3)

In your report you can go on to EVALUATE how the cardiovascular system and respiratory system work
together to supply the body with oxygen and remove carbon dioxide.
 When evaluating these systems answer the question; How well does this currently work? Does it do
its job efficiently? Could it be improved?
(D2)
