（武媚娘傳奇）
When Wu Ru-yi was a little girl, she was sent to the palace. She was smart and beautiful, so Emperor
Taizong of Tang loved her much. One day, an accident happened, and many people thought it was Wu Ruyi who made this accident happen, so she was punished terribly and sent to the cold palace. One year later,
after Wu Ru-yi was released from the cold palace, she fell in love with Emperor of Taizong Tang and then
got a new name “Mei-niang.”
However, when Emperor of Taizong Tang died, Mei-niang felt sad and became a nun. Luckily, she
found she had Emperor Taizong Tang’s baby. To take care of her baby, Mei-niang planned to leave the
temple. But later when Mei-niang went back to the palace, Empress Wang made her lose the baby, so Meiniang decided to revenge.
Mei-niang not only revenged for her dead baby successfully but also won Emperor Gaozong of Tang’s
heart. Emperor Gaozong of Tang made her Empress. They both did many things to make Tang Dynasty
prosperous. But when Emperor Gaozong Tang died, no one was able to take over the leadership, so Meiniang decided to rule the country by herself. Though Mei-niang died in 709, people still remember her
now because she is the only female emperor of China in more than 4,000 years.

1. How is Wuzetian (Wu Mei-niang) valued in history? Surf the Internet for more information and discuss
with your classmates.
When Wuzetian ruled the country, she made the country prosperous. People didn’t worry about food because a lot
of crops were grown at that time. She also respected imperial examination very much, which made more competent
people able to work for the country. However, during her time, the territory of Tang Dynasty became smaller than
before.
2. If Wuzetian (Wu Mei－niang) were reborn, what would you hope her to do for the world?
Female workers are always paid less than men in many places around the world. They are paid less not because
they can’t do things well but because of gender discrimination. If Wuzetian were reborn as a leader, I hope her to do
something to make this different.
