Fossil collecting is no longer practicable, at
most of the guburbanPalaeozoiclocalities,but
therehave beensomenotablefinds in the past,
evenin the city area. Shelly and other marine
fossils have been found in building foundations and during street construction, in the
Dargile Formation in particular. The Black
Rock Sandstone,part of the PlioceneBrighton
Group mentionedearlier,contains similar
marine shells at the Beaumaris type locality.
Sharks teeth, whale, penguin and albatross
bones have also been retrieved from here.

The Atlus of Victoria Committee has worked for live years under the aegis
of thc Projects Division of the I)cpartment of the Premier.'l'he culmination of
iis efforts is the publication of this handsome volume, rvhich rvill, I arn conhdent,
prove to be of great vulue as :r work of refarence in schools, collcgcs, libraries,

The Atlas incorporates m.rny nerv and interesting mirps as well as others,
previously published, thnt appcar now in colour and in a strndardised format.
'lheir quality an<l uplleirLlncc reflect gre:rt credit on thc rrrrnpilcrs frrr thcir carcful
resertrch, on thc rlrirughtsuren for tlreir skill and palicut attcntion to detail, and
on the platemakers, priuters and binders, for their cfl'rrris to achieve a high
standar d of pr esentr r ti on.
An atlas is nr>t just a book illustraterl rvilh nraps irnd pictures. Rather it is a
volume of rnaps with supporting iext and photographs. That this subordinalion
of text to nraps i.t rarely obvious is a tribute to the work of the Editor, Dr J. S.
