The f i*ve
pillars
of Islam
By a Correspondent
A distinctive characteristic of Islam is that it is organised, disciplined and a complete way of life.
It does not confine its scope only
to the private life of a man, it
caters for all the fields cif human
existence.
Islam provides guidance in all
walks of life - individual and social, material and moral, economic and political, legal and cultural,
national and international.
Enjoins
The holy Qur'an enjoins man
to enter the fold of Islam without
any reservation and to follow
God's guidance in all fields of life.
Indeed it was an unfortunate
.day in the history of mankind
when the scope of a religion was
confined to the precincts of
man's private life alone and all
his multiferious activities in all
other fields were left to be guided
by the whims and caprices of
man himself.
No other factor has perhaps
been more important in causing
the decline of religion and consequently the human society in the
. modern age than its self-retreat
into the realm of private life.
Islam however emhatically dedares that its objectives are on
the one hand, purification of the
soul and on the other the reformation and reconstruction of society on the eternal and all-em-
bracing principles set forth in the
holy Qur'an and the life-example
of Prophet Muhammad
(p.b.u.h.).
Another unique feature of Islam is that it establishes a balance between individualism and
collectivism. It believes in the individual personality of man and
holds everyone personally responsible and accountable to
God.
Islam is not a new religion. It
is, in essence, the same message
and guidance which Allah re•vealed to all prophets:
"Say we believe in Allah and
that which has been revealed to
us and that which was revealed to
Abraham and Ismael and Isaac
and Jacob and the tribes and that
which was given to Moses and
Jesus and the other prophets,
from their Lord. We make no distinction to any of them, and to
Him we submit."
Worship
•The declaration of faith: To
bear witness that there is none
worthy of worship except Allah,
and that Muhammad is His Mes
senger to all human beings till the
.day of judgement. The
prophethood of Muhammad
obliges the Muslims to follow his
examplary life as a model.
•Prayers: Daily prayers are offered five times a day as a duty
towards Allah. They strengthen
Muslims refreshing themselves with condiments and other sweets which are sold around the mosquo in the evenings after the saying of
nrayers and breaking the fast during the Holy month ofRamadhan.t
and enliven the belief in Allah
and inspire man to a higher morality. They purify the heart and
prevent temptation towards
wrong-doings and evil.
•Fasting during Ramadhan:
The Muslims during the month
of Ramadhan not only abstain
from food and drink and sex from
dawn to dusk, but also from evil
intentions and desires. It teaches
love, sincerity and devotion. rt
develops a sound social conscience, patience, unselfishness
and will-power.
•Pilgrimage to Mecca: It is performed once in a lifetime, if one
can afford it financially and
physically.
Besides these pillars every action which is done with the
awareness that fulfills the will of
Allah is also considered an act of
worship.
Islam does not teach or accept
mere ritualism. It emphasises intention and action. To worship
God is to know Him and love
Him, to act upon His law in every
aspect of life, to enjoin goodness
and forbid evil and oppression, to
practice charity and justice and
to serve Him by serving mankind.
The Qur'an presents this concept in the following words:
"It is not righteousness that
you turn your faces to the East or
the West, but righteous is he who
believes in God and the Last Day
and the Angels and the Book and
the Prophets; and spends his
wealth for love of him."

desires which a man learns from
fasting, there are other benefits
too. F'rbm the viewpoint of
society, hunger during the month
of Ramadhan makes the rich and
the poor alike.
Moreover, fasting is the means
whereby our sense of gratitude
towards Allah is awakened. We
can rightly measure and truly
appreciate the countless favours
of the Lord when we are deprived
of them, even though for a short
span of time. 'l'hus we can thank
our Creator for His infinite
bounties that He has infinitely
pointed reference to this aspect.
"Ye should complete the

the Greatness of Allah for His
having guided you and that you
may give thanks (11:185)
All adults who are not ill or so
weak as to become ill from fasting
are required to fast. That is why
extremely old persons who fear
death by fasting are not required

work hard and earn his iiving in a
decent way. ''he dignity of work
stands high in the eye of Islam,
land we are urged to stand
dignified, dependable and
responsible workers. Thus, we
can provide for our families well.
Ihere are those who are forturiate and well capable of
working and providing for their
rsnsilies. 'I'here are those who are
less fortunate and may be in need
to various extents Islam urges us
to work hard for our living so that
we will not be in need of others
and lose our dignity and selfrespect.
But for those who are in a position not to be able to work God
provides for them in ordering us
to extend a helping hand. God
says in the Quran: "In their
wealth the needy and the
destitute have their due. Al-
Quran (51:10).
God's Messenger Prophet
Muhammed (p.bu.h.) says: "It is
better for any of you to take your
rope and bring a bundle of wood
and sell it, in which case God will
guard your honour, than to beg of
people, whether they give him or
not' ' . He who is able and fit and
does not work for himself or for
others, God is not gracious to
him."
"God is gracious to him who
earns his living by his own
labour and not by begging"
"He who has enough food for a
day and night - It is prohibited
to be".
A good Muslim is a decent man
and a gentleman. To earn his
living, he has to work for it.

It may be observed that the
worship of the fast of Hamadhan
is instituted to purii' the soul
and create moderation and
termperance, but many people
cross all imits and abandon all
restraints on the ldd day, and the
impact of Hamadhan seems to be
lost on them overnight. The good
of tasting however persists in the
greater part of the Muslim
Lfmmah, and it is a great bounty
