Nurturing One Another, Discovering Together, Inspiring All
Learning in Year 1
This week Year 1 have been introduced to the text 'The
Emperor's Egg'. This text tells the story of the birth of an
Emperor penguin using factual information. This has been a
good opportunity for the children to recall learning from the
beginning of the year when they focussed on the Arctic and
Antarctic in our NLC learning. The children used role play to explore what it
might be like to be in the Antarctic. The children looked at various media such
as pictures and video clips of both animals in the Antarctic and Scientists who
live there for parts of the year. This resulted in the children being able to
produce a piece of writing describing the setting of an Antarctic winter.
Learning in Year 2
Year 2 have begun their new Geography learning
challenge, ‘Why do we love to be beside the seaside?’
They listened to sounds of the seaside and used their
senses to try to imagine what they would see, smell
and taste. After, the children began to think about features of coastal areas and
identified human and physical features which then helped them to annotate
pictures of beaches using geographical vocabulary. Children considered the
human geography of coastal areas by discussing the different roles of people
such as tourists or local people such as fishermen, shopkeepers and life guards.
They then thought about whether these people improved or affected the area
and gave reasons for their opinions.
Year 2 are looking forward to learning more about the seaside.

They loved having to learn the story off by heart. They used lots of different
techniques in their drama such as: intonation, gestures, facial expressions and
body language. They also had to use key words and phrases from the text along
with a narration in their performance.

On
the
Wednesday
before half term, Year 3
spent the day at Kew
Gardens to develop their
understanding
of
pollination and the life
cycle of plants. They had
a fantastic time taking
part in a workshop
during which they had to go hunting for pollinators
among the colourful array of flowers at Kew
Gardens. They also experienced the view that
animals that live in the treetops of jungles and
forests around the world have by wandering along
the treetop walkway. They also learnt about how
plants can be used as medicine in the Kitchen
Gardens and had fun sketching some of the herbs
they learnt about. They also took part in a work
shop all about pollination. They learned lots of new
plants words including ‘stamen’ and ‘stigma’ which
are parts of flowers.
Learning in Year 5
As part of the 'Shakespeare' NLC unit, Year 5 have
been learning about Shakespeare's plays, life in
Shakespearean times and the Globe Theatre. This
week the children have been carefully designing
their own model Globe Theatre. Alongside their
learning about the Theatre, the children have
studied pictures in groups and created their own
detailed plans and designs. They have begun to
build their designs. We think the final products will
be excellent!
Sophia 5J: 'I liked making the Globe Theatre
because it gave me a better understanding of how it
looked. This lesson was great!'
Brooke 5L: 'I really enjoyed making the Globe
Theatre because it was really fun making the design
and the actual building.'
Riya 5J: 'I loved the Shakespeare learning. It told me and returned to Nelson exhausted, but very
about lots of his plays and the theatre. I found proud.
Well done, and thank you for your
making the theatre really fun.'
exceptional behaviour and determination all day.
Abi 5L: 'I enjoyed designing and constructing my
Globe Theatre as I got to take part in my favourite
subject. Also I got to work with people I work as a
good team with. I think that making the Globe
Theatre was a great way to learn about it.'

Borough Sports
On Wednesday 3rd June, some Nelson children
were taken to St Mary's University to compete in
the
annual

Sports
competition. Here we competed against 36 schools
in a range of athletics events. We had an amazing
day of competition and thoroughly enjoyed
ourselves. We did not win any medals or awards as
a team, but individually we exceeded challenges
that we set ourselves. Huge congratulations to
those who performed amazingly in their individual
heat events; Hannah (Yr4) who came 4th in her
400m heat, Liam (Yr5) who came 1st in his sprint
heat and performed exceptionally well at the vortex
throw, Cheick-Kalil (Yr5) who came 1st in his sprint
heat, Zaira (Yr6) who came 5th in her 600m heat
and 1st in her sprint heat. We had a wonderful day
Walking to School Day
On Friday 19 June, along with St
Edmunds School, we are holding a
‘Walking to School Day’ where we really
encourage those of you who currently
drive to school to try walking instead. It
will be great to see how much safer
Nelson Road becomes if the majority of
parents from both schools leave their
cars at home. Not only will the roads be safer, but
walking to school will reduce air pollution, will
improve your child’s overall health and
concentration by getting them active in the
morning, will develop their road safety skills and
gives you an opportunity to have a nice chat with
them too!
So, please see if you can go into work a little bit
later for just one day and let’s see how much safer
we can make the school journey.
