I Have…Who Has…? Text Features, Level 1
Congratulations on your purchase of the Really Good
Literacy Center-in-a-Bag™ I Have…Who Has…? Text
Feature Game, an engaging literacy center game that
builds your students’ ability to identify text features.
Meeting Common Core State Standards
The Really Good Stuff I Have…Who Has…? Text Feature
Game aligns with the following Common Core State
Standards for English Language Arts:
Craft and Structure
RI.2.5 Know and use various text features (e.g., captions,
bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic
menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a
text efficiently.
RI.3.5 Use text features and search tools (e.g., key
words, sidebars, hyperlinks) to locate information
relevant to a given topic efficiently.
This Really Good Stuff product includes:
• 32 I Have…Who Has…? Cards
• 1 Text Feature Reference Mat
• 1 Center Task Card
• This Really Good Stuff Teaching Guide
Text features found in informational text help readers
understand and locate key facts and information.
This I Have…Who Has…? Text Feature Game is
designed to keep a small group of players engaged and
eager to participate. Students must identify key text
features after hearing their definitions and description
of their usage. The game presents two topics that each
have a series of important text features. Each text
feature is isolated on a card so that students gain a
fuller understanding of the importance of that feature
and of how it relates to the topic. The content of this
activity is at the second- and third-grade level; however,
the text cards can be used to review the usage of text
features with students at any grade level.
Each text feature is isolated on a card to
give students a fuller understanding of its
importance and how it relates to the topic.

Introducing the I Have…Who Has…? Text Feature Game
The I Have…Who Has…? Text Feature Game is fun and
easy to play. The two color-coded sets of cards present
text features related to two different topics. The greenbordered cards explore the life of Roald Dahl, and the
orange-bordered cards examine volcanoes. Each set asks
students to think about unique text features. The Roald
Dahl Cards provide questions that require students to
understand the definition of any given text feature, such
as, Who has a text feature that uses bars to show and
compare information? The Volcano Cards are slightly
different in that they require students to identify text
features from a description of their usage. For example,
Who has a text feature that helps you understand what
a photo is about?
A Text Feature Reference Mat is included for added
support. Post it at the center and advise students to
reference it during the game.
Model the I Have…Who Has…? Text Feature Game
With four players, each with four cards, players must
stay focused, as their turn could come at any moment.
Before play, remind students to use the Text Feature
Reference Mat if they have trouble identifying a text
feature. The game starts with the player who has the
Start Card. He or she reads the card aloud and asks who
has the next text feature in the sequence, such as, “Who
has a text feature that helps you understand the order
of events by seeing them displayed on a line?” The Start
Card is then placed face up on the table. The player with
the card that shows a timeline must respond and then
read the lower half of the card, asking who has the next
text feature. Once this is done, the card is placed to the
right of the Start Card.

Really Good Literacy Center-in-a-Bag
I Have…Who Has…? Text Feature Game, Level 1
4 students
Object: Identify text features
Materials: 1 colored set of I Have…Who Has…? Cards,
4 Using Text Features Record Sheet Reproducibles
(optional), Text Feature Sequence Table Reproducible
(optional), Text Feature Reference Mat (optional)
Players identify text features and place their
cards in the order in which they are identified.
The game continues at a fast pace as players read
each card aloud and check to see if they have the next
text feature in the sequence. A piece of construction
paper folded into a tent makes it easier for players to
hold the cards upright and quickly check to see if one of
their text features is described. The game is over when
all the text features have been identified and the Finish
Card is placed on the table. Players can check their work
by referencing the Text Feature Sequence Reproducible.
Extension
After playing the game, students select four cards to
examine more closely. They list the text features in the
first column of the Using Text Features Record Sheet
Reproducible, and then record what they learned from
each one in the subsequent columns.
Center Task Card
Post this at the literacy center in a visible position.
A student or a helper can refer to the Center Task
Card for instructions. Refer to the shaded section at
the top of the card for center preparation, including
needed materials.
Directions:
1. Shuffle the cards. Pass out four cards to each player.
2. Players study the text features on their cards and
prepare to identify them based on their definitions
or usage.
3. The player with the Start Card starts the game by
reading the question aloud: “Who has…?” and then
places that card face down in front of players.
4.The player who has that text feature on his or her
card answers the question and reads the next
question on that card, always placing each card
face up next to the last card in the sequence once
it is read aloud.
5.Play continues in this way until all the text features
have been identified and the Finish Card is read.
6.Players review the cards in front of them, checking
to make sure they are placed in the correct
sequence.
7.As an option, players can check their work by using
the Text Feature Sequence Table.
