Northern India – December 2015 / January 2016 Blue-capped Redstart, Sattal Itinerary: 23. December 24. December 25. December 26. December 27. December 28. December 29. December 30 December 31. December 1. January 2. January 3. January 4. January 5. January 6. January 7. January Flight Zürich – Delhi Transfer to Sattal – afternoon birding at Sattah Sattal Transfer to Pangot – afternoon birding in Pangot Pangot Morning birding at Pangot – Transfer to Delhi Birding at Okhla Birding at Sultanpur – Transfer to Ranthambhore Morning birding at Ranthambhore Fort – afternoon Safari Morning birding at Soorwal dam – Transfer to Bharatpur Full day birding at Bharatpur Bund Bhareta – afternoon around Bharatpur Morning birding at Bharatpur – Transfer to Dholpur, birding at Chambal River Birding around Dholpur including Talab Shahi and at Chambal River Boatsafari Chambal River – Transfer via Agra to Delhi Flight Delhi –Zürich The first part of the trip was organised by Asian Adventures (http://www.asianadventures.net). Everything ran smoothly and Jungle Lore Lodge in Pangot is a very nice place to stay. The lowland part was organised by Gurudongma Tours & Treks (http://www.allindiabirding.com/). They provided me with the best bird guide I ever had in India, Sunil Kumar from Bharatpur. His knowledge is outstanding and his id-skills are excellent! Sites and species Sattal I stayed at the Pine Crest Resort, situated along the road from Bhimtal to Bhowali. Most birding was done along the road to Sattal and around Sattal (1350m) itself. From the dam a path goes down a small valley (passing the famous „studio“, a place where there are always bird photographers around). Birding was good, however activity was rather low in early morning due to low temperatures. Most notable observation was a White-tailed Rubythroat, which hopped around just outside the restaurant at the Pine Crest Resort. I almost fainted during breakfast..... Pangot Situated north of Nainital at 1850m, Pangot (or Pangoot) is a good base to explore the forests and slopes of the Kumaon Range. Jungle Lore Resort held many species (Laughingthrushes, Pink-browed Rosefinch, Black-headed Jay) and is absolutely worth the stay. We birded along the road from Pangot north along the ridge, searching for Pheasants (without much luck) and other birds. 2 nights is probably not enough for this area. We had stunning views of the Himalayas. Okhla Bird Sanctuary This sanctuary is situated at the River Yamuna on the Noida shore. There are two entrances, one in the north, at the beginning of the Delhi Noida Direct Flyway, the other one in the south along Amrapali Marg. The sanctuary is open every day, entrance fee for foreigners is 350 RS. We saw some good birds (including the rare Great Crested Grebe) but we failed with Grassbirds and the likes due to a very strong wind, which made birding difficult. I later found out that a vagrant Pallid Scops Owl would also have been present. Sultanpur National Park 15 kms west from Gurgaon, this was the location we wanted to visit on the 29th December. But that was a Tuesday and Sultanpur is closed on Tuesdays. However, we returned the next day and it was worth it. 100 m after the entrance we heard and eventually saw Brook’s Leaf Warbler. Among the many waterfowl a close White-tailed Lapwing was a nice addition to the list. We struggled a while finding a Sind Sparrow, but on the way out we found a nice male in the reed. Ranthambhore National Park Well, it was New Year and the hotels around the park were packed with Indian tourists. We first drove with the car from the park entrance to the fort. On the way up to the fort we saw a pair of Painted Spurfowl, looking for food in the garbage. Crested Buntings on the top were noteworthy and Yellow-throated Petronias were everywhere. On the way out we spotted another pair of Spurfowls in the rocks at an old gate. In the afternoon I did a tiger safari. Every safari car gets a zone in a lottery. However, the tickets for the best tiger zone (3) were miraculously given to the richest people. We ventured into zones 4 and 5, no tiger but an Indian Vulture. A single bird in the sky was a sad reminder of the fate of this and other vulture species in India. Soorwal dam is north of Ranthambhore. A small road leads to the dam. We encountered thick fog but once the fog lifted we saw lots of birds, including a flock of 19 Indian Skimmers. Bharatpur Keoladeo National Park is unfortunately no longer a wintering site for Siberian Cranes but it’s still full of birds. In the dry parts just after the entrance we found Indian Stone-curlew. In a thicket at the barrier the regular Siberian Rubythroat showed well. Indian Grey Hornbills were searching for fruits in fruiting trees, huge Black-necked Storks flew over and Dusky Eagle-Owls were sitting on a nest in the middle of the park. We also ventured into the southern, dry parts of the park, finding Long-billed Pipits and Black Francolin. Greater Painted-snipes were seen outside the park, in a small sewage pond at the southern tip of the village of Malah (10 minutes to drive from the park entrance). Local guides know the place and can bring you there. We took bicycles to be more mobile. Bund Baretha, a big artificial lake south of Bharatpur still sometimes helds Indian Skimmer. However, we didn’t see any. We first walked along the western shore (from the dam), finding White-capped Bunting and several Jungle Bush Quails. Then we moved on to the old palace in the east but with no other special sightings. About 20 minutes north of Bharatpur are some dry fields (Chaukipura – Chak Sakeetra on Google maps). We walked through the fields and had some nice birds including Desert Wheatear, Isabelline Wheatear and Indian Courser. Chambal River After arriving in Dholpur we immediately headed to the river and walked from the boating station at the northern shore along the river westwards. We saw 2 Indian Skimmers and several Black-bellied Terns. A Laggar Falcon was also a good addition to the list. The next day we explored the area west of Dholpur. One main attraction is the old Talab Shahi Lake, near the town of Bari. We had 31 Black-bellied Terns there among other terns, gulls, ducks and waders. South of the main road from Dholpur to Bari a small road leads to dry hills. We found Painted Sandgrouse, Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse and Barred Buttonquail along this road. The boat safari was a nice end to the tour. Although we didn’t see more Skimmers, we had very nice views of the endangered Gharials.
