report by the Tennessee Center for Policy Research, and an influx of out-of-state businesses
have relocated to this community in recent years.
ECONOMY
Maury County may be known for its old South roots
and antebellum homes, but with its thriving retail
market and diverse industrial base, it boasts one of
Tennessee’s most progressive business climates. The
county serves as a hub for manufacturing, services
and retail throughout south central Tennessee. The
area's top employers include Maury Regional Medical
Center, Tennessee Farm Bureau, TN Aluminum
Processors, Cytec Industries, Interco Print/Trader
Publishing, American Banknote Co., Numatics Inc.,
and Smelter Service.
Examples of Recent Economic Successes

Electric Industrial Company, opened its second U.S. facility in Mt. Pleasant. The company,
which produces seat adjusters and other automotive parts for clients that include Honda and
Nissan, is investing $50 million and creating 385 jobs. Sekisui Plastics USA, which located in
Maury County in 2006 to produce foam resin polymers used in doors, bumpers and other parts
of all U.S.-built Toyotas, Mazdas, Mitsubishis, Hondas and Nissans, has also expanded. Also,
GM brought in more than 500 employees to its Spring Hill facility to increase manufacturing
capacity of a four-cylinder engine.
A March 2011 cooperative purchase agreement
between GM and the South Central Tennessee
Workforce Alliance, the Workforce Development
and Conference Center at Northfield will serve as a
leading-edge workforce development and career
center, as well as, a business accelerator,
launching entrepreneurial businesses with a focus
on emerging technologies, including the soaring
solar industry.
In September, 2011 TRG Customer Solutions, a leading global business process outsourcing
provider of customer management solutions and technologies, launched a new contact center
facility in Spring Hill. The 50,000-square-foot facility at the Workforce Development and
Conference Center on Saturn Parkway and has brought over 900 jobs to the community.
TRANSPORTATION
Maury County is a 40-minute drive to Nashville International Airport and the Port of Nashville
on the Cumberland River. I-65 makes it well connected between the major commerce cities
of Nashville, TN and Huntsville, AL. Rail systems, CSX Transportation and the Tennessee
Southern Railroad, connects the county with several parts of middle Tennessee and north
Alabama. I-840 eastbound offers trucking access to east Tennessee, North Carolina and

Memphis, Arkansas and Texas.
Maury County Regional Airport is county-owned public-use airport that serves the needs of
area business and industry by accommodating both corporate passengers and freight. Target
Wal-Mart and Goody’s executives use it regularly.
HEALTHCARE
Year after year, Columbia's Maury Regional
Medical Center is ranked among the best health
systems in the nation. MRMC was named a top
health system in 2011 and 2012 by Thomson
Reuters. In addition, they have been named a Top
100 hospital four times by Thomson Reuters. It
was also the only middle Tennessee provider
among the Top Performing Hospitals in the
Premier health-care alliance's national QUEST
collaborative – an initiative that helps member
hospitals deliver the best possible care through
collaboration on process solutions.
As the region's only heart center, MRMC provides interventional cath lab procedures such as
angioplasty and stenting and cardiothoracic surgery through collaboration with Vanderbilt
Heart. Included by Thomson Reuters among 50 of the nation's top cardiovascular hospitals,
Maury Regional is also home to a Level III accredited chest pain center and provides cardiac
and pulmonary rehab to help patients recover faster. MRMC's Diagnostic Imaging department
recently became the first in Tennessee to install a high-field open MRI system. The Hitachi
Oasis open MRI system minimizes claustrophobia and anxiety and its high-resolution scans are
faster and clearer than ever. The hospital also is a leader in oncology and recently completed
an expansion into the Columbia Mall.
Orthopedic surgeons at MRMC were among the nation's first to perform the reverse shoulder
implant and the gender-specific knee replacement for women. Spine procedures include disc
repairs and cervical and lumbar disc surgery and fusion. The hospital also offers a full range
of neurological services, including stroke and injury treatment, while the tiniest patients
receive care in a neonatal intensive care unit staffed by specially trained physicians and
nurses from Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.
EDUCATION
Columbia State Community College, the first community college in Tennessee history serves
nine counties at five campuses in south central Tennessee. CSCC is accredited by the same
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools that accredits universities such as Vanderbilt,
Tennessee, Belmont, Lipscomb and Middle Tennessee State. The college offers 50 degree
programs and is especially well known for its nursing and elementary education curriculums.
CSCC also partners with area businesses to provide training and continuing education for
employees.
Acknowledging the growing solar sector in Tennessee, CSCC's Center for Economic and
Workforce Development now offers online sustainability courses for students interested in

At the same time, Columbia State also launched an extensive effort to make its own
sustainability improvements across the main campus in Columbia as well as four satellite
facilities.
The South Central Tennessee Workforce
Development and Conference Center at
Northfield is a unique facility to the middle
Tennessee area. The 320,000 square foot
building is divided into three sections:
Training;
Conference
Center;
and
Commercial Space. Centrally located and
conveniently off of the Saturn Parkway
adjacent to I-65, Northfield’s proximity is ideal for several reasons. Employers locating within
the facility find it easier to draw employees from the surrounding area with the reverse
commuting patterns. Another location benefit is the facility’s ability to hold regional
conferences, employee training sessions and association meeting. Students also enjoy the
ease of travel to the building and availability of job market driven classes in their area.
The training section at the Workforce Development and Conference Center enables many
different educational institutions to be housed under one roof offering classes such as:
Automotive Technology, Computer Numerical Control and EMT/Paramedic programs. While
much of the commercial space at Northfield is already under contract, it is impressive with
200,000 square foot of office space, 700 work stations, 50 conference rooms ranging in size of
2-25 persons, and 6,000 square foot of manufacturing space.
RECREATION/CULTURAL AMENTITIES
Maury County has an abundance of city and county parks. Woodland Park Center in Columbia,
a city park, and William Springs Park in Mt. Pleasant both offer extensive walking paths.
Chickasaw Trace Park offers hiking and biking trails in a wilderness setting as the trail winds.
There are 400-plus miles of the Natchez Trace Parkway that runs from Maury County to
Natchez, Mississippi.
There are 270 miles of the Duck River that
run through several cities and counties and
provide canoeing, kayaking, wildlife, scenic
views, gravel bars, sloughs and bottomlands.
Duck River is deep and quick flowing enough
for experienced paddlers, but easily managed
by beginners too. There’s also fishing, caving
and horseback riding. Hunting is superb due
to Maury County's large agricultural base and
abundant ponds, lakes and rivers. There is
also the Maury County Gun Club and Skeet
Range located in Columbia. The Southport
Saltpeter Cave is one of the largest in middle
