Quiet: Hearing God Above the Noise
Well, summer has finally arrived to Northwest Ohio. With it has come the long days of
working in the yard, going camping, vacationing and enjoying the world around us. Yes summer
pulls us all in many directions. It is easy to let our relationship with God take a back seat as we
fill our calendars with fun things to do and exciting places to go. Our lives move in waves of
excitement and rest and it is important to keep that balance. While summer is an exciting time
with lots of things to do it can also be a great time to intentionally rest from our on the go lives.
In June we will begin a sermon series that will look at how we can hear God above the
noise of this life. As I’ve been planning this series I’ve been looking through the scriptures and
finding all the ways God invites us to rest. Often I am reminded of a trip I took to Florida just a
few years ago. My family and I visited Sanibel Island. Its one of my favorite places in the world.
There is just something about the island life. Things are slower not he Island. People ride bikes
and golf carts to get around. Service is slower but that’s ok because it just means you get more
time to enjoy the ambiance at the restaurants. All around you an hear the crash of the waves on
the beach, the ebb and flow of peace that just seems to say “Relax.”
In the evening, after a day of beach combing and shopping and snacking on tasty treats,
my family and I went down by the ocean and sat on the sand to watch the sunset. As we
watched the bright orange sun sink into the brilliant blue sea, we listened to the waves. As they
flowed in and out across the beach, you could almost hear God calling you to admire and bask
in the calm. Ever since that night I find that I feel calm and at peace whenever I am at the beach
(If only we had a beach in Fayette). There is something about that call from God to let go of all
the things we have to do and enter into sabbath rest that seems perfectly designed for the
summer.
Yet in our culture, it seems, our summers are long awaited and short lived. As soon as
we adjust to the hot temperatures, we find them dropping. As soon as we begin to enjoy the
longer days, day light saving time sends us back to less and less daylight. So how can we hear
God above the noise - the hustle and bustle - of our lives?
Well, keeping Sunday as a sabbath time is a perfectly designed way to intentionally
commune with God each week. After all, rest on a sabbath was divinely created. In Genesis we
see God, himself, resting from his work of creation. Throughout the gospels we see Jesus,
going off to a solitary place to spend time in prayer and rest.
You know, on Sunday we, as Christians set ourselves and our lives apart by
participating in worship. We are filled by the word of God and empowered to take on the week
ahead. By intentionally setting time aside to worship we are making God our top priority and
after we set God as the number 1 thing in our lives, the rest of life seems to fall into place. The
to-do lists that seem to never end are manageable, and the hustle and bustle of life is much
more enjoyable. My friends, this summer, as we slow down and tune in to listen to God’s
speaking, I pray that you will join us each Sunday to spend some time worshiping and thanking
God. May we truly learn to quiet our lives and listen for God’s leading in all things.
In the grace and peace of Christ,
Pastor Andrea

Nuevo Progresso, Mexico – Medical Missions/House of Hope (Construction) Trip
November 9-13, 2016
If you are interested in going, see Robin Pfund for details
We will be sending a team to Mexico in November
Join us to hear how you can take part in this exciting opportunity.
What is House of Hope?
Children’s stories tell of evil trolls who live under bridges. Our story begins with innocent children,
ravaged by social chaos and poverty, forced to live under the bridge that connects Progresso, Texas to
Nuevo Progresso, Mexico. These unfortunate souls call out to Americans crossing the bridge on their
way to the small tourist town of Nuevo Progresso. They don’t have enough to eat. They don’t have a
safe place to live. And their only hope is the few coins they can beg from Americans lured to the town
and its musicians, artisans and vendors.
The United Methodist Church has been sending teams and support to this area for over 20 years.
Working with the Manos Juntas Ministry of the Mexican United Methodist Church, clinics, community
centers and other support structures have been built and supported for the humble and gracious people
of this poor region.
More must be done.
That’s where The Nuevo Progresso House of Hope comes in. In partnership with Manos Juntas, we can
provide a loving, supportive environment for children in desperate need.
A place to live, learn and flourish House of Hope is so much more than a shelter – It’s an inviting home.
It does more than serve meals – it feeds an aching hunger for love. It’s not simply a classroom – it instills
an ongoing sense of value and self-worth. House of Hope provides a safe, loving environment for
learning (two teachers are on site) as well as a home-like environment where children can play together
and interact with positive adult influences. A social worker, physician and dentist provide for emotional
and physical needs, while the House of Hope director and proctors help care for the development of
children.
We are partnering with other UMC congregations to help support the House of Hope.
