SPRING
Program Overview
F a c u lt y - l e d
This class provides an overview and a participatory examination of Cuba’s urban organic farming system, as well as the language,
history, and culture surrounding it. We will visit the country of Cuba during Spring Break, where we will participate in lectures
provided by agricultural experts on the island. Emphasis will be placed on the innovative approaches Cuba has used following
a change in available agricultural inputs, including social innovations. We will examine the possibility of applying the Cuban
model to southeastern North Carolina.
Academics
Students will construct a field resource notebook on Cuba to be used by the class prior to the trip. During the trip, students will
be responsible for taking notes on an assigned day.
Students will actively participate in field activities and discussions each day of the trip.
Based on the notes taken during the assigned field day, each student will:
Write letters to all hosts for that day, submit a complete journal entry on that day, submit 1-3 Powerpoint slides, assist with
material for poster creation, and formal, public, presentation of findings.
Students will be also required to submit a reflection paper on
the field trip experience.
