Dear friends in Christ,
We're now entering the liturgical season of Lent. Many consider the period of Lent to
be a time of confession, repentance, and a time to focus on our sin. Put another way, Lent is
viewed as a time of self-examination. A time for us to consider the gap that exists between us
and God. An important element in that discussion should be for each of us to consider the
steps we need to take in order to close that gap. With this in mind, I am making a proposal.
Let’s worship God together. Let’s pray to God together. Let’s study God’s Word together. As
you enter into a time of self-reflection, do your best to live your life God’s way.
During the season of Lent, we will engage in a study of Jesus’ parables. To do this, we will utilize a
resource that I have mentioned to you in the past, RightNow Media. One of the studies available for use is R.C.
Sproul’s study on The Parables of Jesus. During Lent, Cross Roads will offer a couple of weekly opportunities
to gather for this study.
One opportunity will be on Sunday morning, during the Faith Works class time. Each Sunday morning
during Lent, we will gather in Fellowship Hall from 8:45 to 9:45 am to watch the video and engage in
discussion of the parable for that week. The same class will be offered on the following Wednesday evening
from 6:30 to 7:30 pm in the Parlor. So, you can pick one of those two options and join the group! If those
times do not work for you, you are still invited to gather a small group of your own, at a time that is convenient
for the group, and engage in study with us! You can even do the study on your own. The goal is to get more
folks engaged in studying the Bible.

RightNow Media is a resource available to all the members and friends of Cross Roads Presbyterian
Church. If you have not received an email invitation to create your own user profile, contact the church office.
Let us know which email address you would like the invitation to be sent. It’s that easy! You can preview the
video at home, prior to the weekly gathering.
I will purchase the license agreement for 25 copies of the Parables of Jesus Study Guide and make these
copies available to those interested in the study. The study guide is also available online for $3.75 each. The
link is found on RightNow Media. I know, this is all quite new to all of us. So, don’t be afraid to ask questions
as we engage with this new resource.
I hope that your Lent is a season of self-examination that bears much fruit.
In Christ,
Pastor Rob

Ash Wednesday is March 1
Cross Roads will offer two worship services on Ash Wednesday, March 1.
Traditional Worship
We will hold a traditional worship service at 9:30 a.m. in our Sanctuary, with
Communion and the Imposition of Ashes for those who would like to receive them.
Following worship, a light continental breakfast will be available in Fellowship Hall.
Contemporary Worship
At 6:30 p.m. our Alternative Ministry Project team will offer a special Ash
Wednesday service, with Communion and the Imposition of Ashes available as well.
This service will begin with a shared soup supper in Fellowship Hall, followed by a
time of reflection and contemporary music as we begin the season of Lent. All are
welcome!
Sunday Morning Worship at 10:00 a.m.
March 5 – First Sunday in Lent – Pastor Rob’s
sermon will be titled “The Truth Concerning Lent,”
based on Romans 5:12-19 and Matthew 4:1-11.
Lent begins in the wilderness. The wilderness time
of Lent is a time of turning around and
disorientation. But it is disorientation for the sake of
reorientation towards the truth of our
lives and the truth about God. Jesus
has been presented to us by Matthew
as the Messiah, one who is fully
human and fully divine. Therefore,
as Jesus begins his ministry, he
begins in a very human way – being
offered tempting alternatives by
Satan. We will share in Communion
together.
March 19 – Third Sunday in Lent – Today’s texts
are Romans 5:1-11 and John 4:5-42, and Pastor
Rob’s sermon will be “The Divine Initiative.” In a
Samaritan city Jesus encounters a woman at a well
and engages her in conversation. In response, she
proclaims to her friends and neighbors her
experience of Jesus. John 4 can be read
as a sort of missionary text. Jesus has
moved out of his accustomed setting. He
is in Samaria, and encounters a Samaritan
woman. Jesus takes the initiative in this
conversation with the Samaritan woman.
Here is a vignette that illustrates a central
truth of our engagement with Jesus Christ
– he comes to us before we know how to
come to him.
March 12 – Second Sunday in
Lent (50th Anniversary Celebration) - Fifty years
ago, on March 12, 1967, the first service of worship
was held in the sanctuary. The congregation made
the move to a new facility on Haymaker Road. On
this special day in the life of Cross Roads, we will
be re-creating much of that first service. Sheldon
Sorge, the general minister to Pittsburgh Presbytery,
will be delivering the sermon, “Past, Present and
Future,” based on 2 Chronicles 6:12, 14-21 and 1
Corinthians 3:10-15, just as his predecessor did 50
years previously. Plan to attend this special
celebration of worship!
March 26 – Fourth Sunday in Lent Pastor Rob’s sermon will be “Point Your Finger
Elsewhere,” based on Ephesians 5:8-14 and John
9:1-41. Jesus heals a man who was blind from birth,
thus provoking a controversy about sin and sinners.
Many people feel that the whole point of religion is
to separate the righteous from the unrighteous, the
sinners from the saved. Jesus reveals a God who is
more into healing, compassion, and salvation than
into divine condemnation. Before we followers of
Jesus point our fingers at the sins of others, we need
to humbly recognize and confess our own sin,
confident that Jesus Christ comes into the world to
save sinners.

One Great Hour of Sharing To Be Received
For more than 50 years, Presbyterians have joined with Christians throughout
the nation in supporting One Great Hour of Sharing, responding to Christ's love for
all people by joyfully sharing that love with people in need. The refugee and the
stranger have found food and safe shelter; those stunned by the aftermath of disasters
have found relief and help rebuilding; and communities seeking to take control of
their future have found partners in development. The hundreds of millions of dollars
Presbyterians have given over the last half-century have enabled a powerful witness
to the love of the One who came that all might have life more abundantly. After
deducting administrative costs (up to 5 percent) and the costs of creating and
distributing promotional materials (roughly 5 percent), the remaining undesignated gifts are divided among
three programs as follows:
Presbyterian Hunger Program (36 PERCENT)
For ministries working to alleviate hunger and eliminate its causes, responding with compassion and
justice to poor and hungry people in local communities, in the nation and throughout the world, as well as
ministries addressing homelessness and affordable housing.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (32 PERCENT)
For disaster response and ministries with refugees.
Self-Development of People (32 PERCENT)
For partnerships with groups of people who are oppressed by poverty or social systems, who want to
take charge of their own lives, have organized to do something about their own condition, and have decided
what they need to do to produce long-term benefits for themselves.
Cross Roads will receive the One Great Hour of Sharing offering during Lent. Please give generously
using the One Great Hour of Sharing offering envelopes found in the pew racks.

From Great to Good
Jim Collins’ 2001 book Good to Great featured companies that had “made the leap” to
greatness. Years later, many of them are no longer great; some aren’t even around.
Should Christians seek greatness? After all, our attempts to be great — wealthy, powerful,
successful, famous — often become the “enemies” of our doing the good God commands.
God’s Word flips on its head the saying “good is the enemy of great.” The meek, Jesus teaches,
will inherit the earth (Matthew 5:5). “Whoever would be great among you,” he says, “must be your
servant” (Mark 10:43, ESV). One of Jesus’ most famous parables is called the Good Samaritan, not the
Great Samaritan. And goodness, not greatness, is a fruit of the Spirit.
Christians and churches are called not to greatness but to doing good for the sake of the world.
Let’s shift our focus “from great to good.”

Art Exhibit and Shopping

shopping? Join us on a field trip to the Jewish Community
Center in Squirrel Hill on Saturday, March 11, leaving the
church at 10:00 a.m. We’ll view the exhibit “Sixty
Paintings from the Bible” featuring artist Archie Rand’s
distinct mash-up of comics, pulp-style drawing and biblical
narrative. Riffing on 17th century artist Matthaeus Merian’s
engravings of bible scenes, the works in Sixty Paintings are
straight from the Old Testament and depict the foibles and
struggles that human beings seem doomed to repeat.
After our tour at the Jewish Community Center
we’ll head over to 10,000 Villages in Shadyside for some
shopping. Remember that your purchase provides
employment for women around the world. Then, if you are
hungry, we will pick a restaurant in that neighborhood and have a little lunch before returning to the church.
Meet at Cross Roads at 9:30 a.m. to carpool, or meet us at the Jewish Community Center at 10:00. Signup on the Bulletin Board by the water fountain in the office hallway.

Faith and Fiction Book Club
If you enjoy a good book, join our Faith and Fiction book club! We are
reading “The Housekeeper and the Professor” by Yoko Ogawa. He is a brilliant
math Professor with a peculiar problem―ever since a traumatic head injury, he
has lived with only eighty minutes of short-term memory. She is an astute young
Housekeeper―with a ten-year-old son―who is hired to care for the Professor.
And every morning, as the Professor and the Housekeeper are introduced to
each other anew, a strange and beautiful relationship blossoms between them.
Though he cannot hold memories for long (his brain is like a tape that begins to
erase itself every eighty minutes), the Professor's mind is still alive with elegant
equations from the past. And the numbers, in all of their articulate order, reveal
a sheltering and poetic world to both the Housekeeper and her young son. The
Professor is capable of discovering connections between the simplest of
quantities―like the Housekeeper's shoe size―and the universe at large,
drawing their lives ever closer and more profoundly together, even as his
memory slips away. Yoko Ogawa's The Housekeeper and the Professor is an
enchanting story about what it means to live in the present, and about the curious equations that can create a
family.
We will meet Sunday evening, March 5, at 6:00 p.m. in the church parlor. Pick up a copy of the book at
the library or a local bookstore and be ready for a friendly discussion. Everyone is welcome.
Adult Education For March
Our Faith Works class for adults is held at 8:45 each Sunday morning in Fellowship Hall. For the
season of Lent, which begins on Sunday, March 5, Pastor Rob will lead us in a discussion of the parables. He
will use material available on RightNow media and show you how to access the resources at home as well. Join
us for an interesting look at these teachings of Jesus, each Sunday March 5-April 9.
If you can’t attend the Sunday morning lessons, the class will be offered again on Wednesday evenings
from 6:30-7:30 in the church parlor. Please see Pastor Rob’s article on page 1 of this newsletter for a complete
schedule, and plan to join the discussion!

PLANNED GIVING OPPORTUNITIES
We invite you to have lasting impact on our Church by including Cross Roads in your gift
and/or estate plans. Your enduring statement of faith will be used to further Christ’s work and
will have an impact on future generations of our church family. Individuals who have included
the Church in their gift or estate plans are eligible for the Pillars of Cross Roads Program,
which recognizes individuals who have made or who are making bequests, estate plans or
irrevocable gifts.
I/we would like to know more about how I/we might make a planned gift to Cross Roads.
I/we have already included Cross Roads in my/our estate plans.
