(Beginning Surf) Summer 2013

(Beginning Surf)
Summer 2013
Who? Anyone wanting to learn to surf with the ability to swim in the dynamic ocean environment!
What? Beginning Surf – No previous experience necessary!
When? 4:30-6pm Tuesday & Thursdays (9/10-9/17)
Where? Newport Pier
Congratulations on wanting to become a surfer and welcome to one of the most popular and fun classes offered
through Campus Recreation at UCI!
Frequently Asked Questions:
Are wetsuits provided? No. If you feel like you will need a wetsuit, try to borrow one from a friend. The cheapest
options seem to be Trestles surf shop in San Clemente and Costco (when they have them). If you intend to be a surfer,
you will eventually want a wetsuit. It is not required for this class (although the Pacific Ocean is not known for its
warmth).
Where is Newport Pier? On the Balboa Peninsula, there are two piers. If you are driving onto the peninsula from the 55
or PCH via Newport Blvd., it will be your first pier. It takes about 25 minutes to get there from UCI. From campus, take
University Dr. to Jamboree. Take a left on Jamboree to PCH. Take a right on PCH until Newport Blvd. Take Newport
Blvd. onto the peninsula and follow signs to Newport Pier. This is just one way to get there. Check out a map and find a
way that works for you!
Is there a shuttle? No, the UCI shuttle does not make the Newport run anymore.
What about parking? There is a big parking lot at the pier that requires meter-feeding. You might also find free street
parking.
Where do we meet? Meet literally underneath the Newport pier. The surfboards are stored underneath the pier. Try to be
a few minutes early as class will begin at 4:30pm.
Who is the instructor? Scott Morlan has been teaching surfing for the City of Newport for over 30 years. He also coaches
the Newport High School surf team. He has been teaching surfing for UCI for as long has we have had a program.
I heard there was a swim test? Yes. On the first class there will be a swim test (roughly 100 yard swim). Sometimes
people do not pass the swim test and cannot, then, take the class.
What if I cannot make the first class? If you do not make it to the first class (and, thus, miss your opportunity to
participate in the swim test) your space will be given away to somebody on the waitlist (and there are always people on
the waitlist).
How can I prepare for class? If you are not sure that you can pass the swim test, get in the pool and practice. More
importantly, get down to the beach and play around in the water to get comfortable in the dynamic ocean environment.
Is there a materials fee? No. You will receive a surfing handbook but those costs are included in the course costs.
What if I am on the waitlist? If you are on the waitlist, go to the first class anyway. Most of the time, waitlisted folks
make it into the class. Sometimes people that sign up for the class miss the first class or do not pass the swim test. In
those cases, people on the waitlist who are there and pass their swim test are allowed into the class.
