Characteristics of Life


Learning about the different types of living
things around you
› Many life forms have not been named or studied
yet
Learn why living things possess certain
features and how those features work
 Learn how living things depend upon other
living things in a variety of ways
 Biologists study problems and propose
solutions


What is living and nonliving?

Here are some questions that you may
ask yourself……..
 Does it move?
 Does it grow?
 Does it reproduce?
A flame can move
 It can grow
 And it can produce more flames


ARE FLAMES ALIVE???

Organism = Anything that possess all of
the characteristics of life

All Living Things…
1. Have an orderly structure
2. Make more living things
3. Change during their lives
4. Adjust to their surroundings
5. Adapt & evolve
Composed of one or more cells
 Each cell contains genetic material
(DNA) that provides information to
control the organisms life processes
 All of an organisms parts function
together in an orderly, living system

Reproduction- the production of
offspring
 For life to continue, organisms must
replace themselves
 Reproduction is not essential for the
survival of an individual organism, but it is
essential for the continuation of the
organisms’ species


All Life begins as a single cell and changes
over time to take on the characteristics of
its species.

Growth
› an increase in the amount of living material
› the formation of new structures

Development
› all the changes that take place during the
life of an organism

Living Things constantly interact with their
surroundings
› the air, water, weather, temperature, and other
organisms in the area
Stimulus = condition in the environment that
requires an organism to adjust
 Response = the reaction to a stimulus

› Ex: The fox responds to the presence of a rabbit by quietly
moving towards it, then pouncing
› Stimulus: the rabbit
› Response: fox moving towards the rabbit

Homeostasis = regulation of an organisms
internal environment to maintain conditions
suitable for its survival
› Without the ability to adjust to internal changes, organisms die

Adaptations
› any structure, behavior, or internal process
that enables an organism to better survive in
an environment
› Inherited from previous generations

Evolution
› The gradual accumulation of adaptations
over time
