Exciting News for DCHS Students
By: Krystal Klawonn and Natalie Joos
The 2015 Publications class will be constructing a bi-weekly school newspaper, The Mustang Messenger, designed to bring you
news about events at DCHS. The newspaper will be published every other Tuesday. If you would like to see us include something in
particular, see a member of the staff. In addition to the newspaper, our class will continue our hard work to create another great yearbook.
Throughout the year we may approach you with questions or surveys, and we appreciate your willingness to contribute, as we’d love to
feature as many students as possible. We’re very dedicated to improving our school community by bringing you the news on sporting
events, sharing what’s going on in clubs, helping you get to know new students and staff, and updating you on what’s happening in the
classroom. We hope you enjoy and have a wonderful year!
Student Council Off to a Good Start
By: Kelly Lynch
On August 31 The Student Council Officer and
Representative Election was held and students were appointed a
position.
On Friday, following the election, The Student Council
officers met and discussed upcoming homecoming plans. They
also discussed fundraising and class meetings, which were held
that afternoon. Seniors met and discussed graduation planning,
such as class t-shirts, class song, etc. The junior class met in the
gymnasium and had a full agenda. They discussed ideas for
fundraising in order to decorate prom in the spring. Their plans
are to sell homecoming mums and homecoming t-shirts. The
sophomores had a little less to discuss. They made plans for
homecoming and also talked about next year’s fundraising efforts.
The freshman class also met for their very first class meeting. The
freshman class officers discussed fundraising and informed their
class about all of the fun events that come with high school
homecoming.
Mr. Wilson, student council advisor, is very excited for
the new year." We have a really hard working group of student
council members and great senior leadership. They are go
getters!”
Introducing Ellen
By: Brittney Rysdam
We are fortunate to have a foreign exchange
student at Davis County High School for the 2015-2016
school year.
Ellen Huang is a 17 year old from Taichung,
Taiwan. Her hobbies at home in Taiwan include art and
playing basketball. She also enjoys playing a board game
called "Go" which is similar to chess. Ellen hopes to
become better at speaking English and participate in
more sports while she’s in America.
When asked what some differences are between
Taiwan and America, Ellen explains that everything is
different. In her school at home, each grade level has
their own classroom that they stay in all day. Different
teachers come in and teach them different subjects. They
also eat lunch in this classroom. She enjoys switching
classrooms throughout the day. Ellen enjoys basketball
very much, but her school does not have a girls’
basketball team.
Ellen finds the Amish people very interesting, as
she has never seen anyone like them before. She has two
younger sisters at home that are 15 and 12 years old. She
is staying with Keith and Kerry Tucker. They have three
children, a boy and two girls. Ellen is scheduled to go
back to Taiwan on May 30th.
New Band Teacher Comes to DC
By: Caitlin Paddock
After a 32 year reign, Linda McConnell has
passed on her title of DCHS Band Director to Mr. Aaron
Ottmar. Mr. Ottmar started his teaching duties in July,
during the band’s summer band camp. He’s adjusting
well and enjoying the position.
“I love it here,” says Ottmar when asked how he
feels about his new position in Davis County. He adds,
“Both the students and the school are great.” He explains
that he loves music, so this is the perfect job for him.
While the main instruments that Mr. Ottmar plays
are the piano and percussion, he also dabbles in all of the
other instruments in the band. He likes to play along with
his students in their lessons. Not only does this help him
know what the students need help with, but allows him to
learn along with them. He states, “You can always learn
something new.”
In his free time, Mr. Ottmar likes both playing
and listening to music; playing the occasional basketball
game; and watching basketball, football, and soccer. We
welcome Mr. Ottmar to the district and wish him a great
year!
Coaches’ Comments
By: Hannah Rumohr
As the hustle and bustle of the first few weeks
of the school year begins, the hard work of the
practices put into the humid gyms, endless gravel
roads, and the muddy football field begins to pay off.
The coaches of the fall sports are excited for their
teams to finally play the games they have waited all
summer for.
Mr. Blake is pumped for this season. He says
that the main thing that he wants to focus on this
season is getting better each day, week, and game. I
asked him how he expected the season to go and he
plans on having a successful year. He told me he had a
lot of fun things planned- competition days, swimming
after practice, bonding over football movies, and
eating pizza and watching film on Wednesday nights.
As for any rivals for the football team this year,
there is no such thing in Coach Blake's eyes! The team
will take each opponent the same, and do the best they
can every game. He says that the players need to focus
on not comparing themselves to their teammates. Mr.
Blake says that he is starting the year with a very
inexperienced team: he has some players who have
never played high school football and some who have
never had varsity experience, but he is confident that
the team has what it takes. Lastly, Mr. Blake wants the
students to know that he is honored to be a Mustang
and the head football coach!

Davis County Art Club had their first
meeting September 10th. About 30 people
attended and showed their interest in art.
The Art Club does a lot of fun things
throughout the school year, such as selling cookie
dough, having bonfires, and going on trips to see
all kinds of cool, interesting and different art.
Art Club is run by our art teacher, Mrs.
Chaplin who is in her 39th year of teaching. “The
best thing about Art Club is you get to meet other
people. You might not always be in the same
classes but you get to meet by expressing your
love for art,” shares Mrs. Chaplin.
So if you are looking for a way to get
involved this year, art club is just one of many
ways at Davis County High School.
