Finishing Up with the Puritans

Issue 29
3/28/2016
This week we will get back into our Greek and Latin Root unit of study.
The students will be studying words that have the roots grapho (meaning
write) and quad (meaning four). Just like our first two weeks of this unit,
students will be responsible for studying these words for a quick quiz on
Friday morning, along with completing 2 spelling options.
Conferences
At the end of the week, the Delaney School will
be having Spring Conferences. Thank you for taking
the time to set up a time-slot on either Thursday
evening or Friday afternoon. Report cards will be
going home tomorrow (4/29), so feel free to come
with any questions regarding your child’s recent
grades. I am hoping to give you a picture of your
child’s progress across the third grade curriculum,
as well as to share and develop goals for the
remainder of the school year. I look forward to
meeting with everyone at the end of the week!
Important Dates:
Evening Conferences 3/31
(1/2 Day)
Afternoon Conferences 4/1
(1/2 Day)

April Vacation 4/18-4/22
Forms of Energy
The scientists in Mrs. Jeffries’ room have finished their unit about space and are moving
on to build an understanding of basic forms of energy. The students were lucky to
participate in an experiment to begin understanding potential and kinetic energy last week.
Soon they will be working with a small group to create a graphic source showing pictures of
different types of energy including electrical, mechanical, and nuclear energy. Typically the
students enjoy finding or creating their own visuals to recall what different energy types
could look like in our daily lives. For example, students could draw powerlines to model a
form of electrical energy or a moving vehicle to show mechanical energy.
Finishing Up with the Puritans
This week will be our last studying the Puritans of Massachusetts Bay
Colony. By now, students are able to answer questions such as, why did the
Puritans leave England for North America? Where did they settle? Who
were some important leaders and figures of the colony? and How did the
Puritans get along with the Native American tribes of the area. Instead of
taking a big test for this unit, students will use their notes packets and
books to complete a short task. We will also take time to play a Puritan
Kahoot, a good way for me to assess understanding, but a fun way for the
students to show what they have learned. Once we have played the game in
our classroom, I will post it to our website for use at home.
