Did you know that the notion of “time off” is a product of modern industrial society,
in other words the Industrial Age? Yes, with industrialization came factories, and all the
factories had time clocks. It was the workers punching time clocks in factories who made
us so aware of “time on” the job and “time off” the job. Workers became concerned about
how much of their time belonged to the factory owners and how much of it belonged to
themselves. In non industrialized or more agrarian societies, the division between time on
and time off is not as clear. There are, of course, no time clocks on the farm. But even
there you’ll find plenty of days set aside for celebration, feasting, and rest.
Long ago, in prehistoric times—before written records of events were kept—we
think there was probably little distinction or even no distinction between work and play,
between time on and time off. How do you like that idea? People got up in the morning,
gathered food, ate, then rested so that they could get up next day, gather more food, eat,
rest, and then continue this pattern day after day. To work was live. I would have enjoyed
living then; what about you? Do you think this pattern has changed?

A contract is a legal agreement that is made by two or more people. Usually a
contract involves a promise to perform an action or to abstain from some action. Because
a promise is made as a contract, the people who are called parties in legal language have
an obligation under the law to act as they said they would. Failure to follow the terms of a
contract is enough reason for a court suit. Such legal arrangements as contracts are
essential for the free enterprise system; business cannot work, without a method of
making certain that people will deliver merchandise, perform services, or pay rent as they
had agreed to do in the contracts they signed.
