Garden Visit
The students can show the LGT Coordinator what is happening with their plants and worms. The
LGT Coordinator can help troubleshoot problems and answer student questions.
Microclimates
Discuss microclimates and their effect on plant growth and natural resources. Brainstorm some
microclimates either in the schoolyard or inside the classroom. Make predictions about where the
temperature, air movement and precipitation might vary.
In groups, plant bean seeds and place them in areas with different microclimates. Measure and
record the temperature and describe the weather in that microclimate.
Follow-up
Monitor and record the weather and growth daily. Measure and graph the growth. Compare growth
in each microclimate.
Conclusion
 How do weather and microclimates affect our natural resources?
 Why is it important to know the ideal conditions and locations for plant growth?
 How can we extend the short Calgary growing season?
