The Stichting Omroep Muziek (Dutch Music Broadcasting Foundation) (SOM) is the Dutch Public Broadcasters’ production centre for live music. Given its Live Music responsibilities and, on the basis of arrangements with the NPO (the Dutch Public Broadcasters), NTR (the independent Dutch public service broadcaster) and AVROTROS (an independent broadcaster), it is tasked with producing three major symphonic series for NPO Radio 4: the NTR ZaterdagMatinee (‘Saturday Matinee’), the AVROTROS Vrijdagconcert (‘Friday concert’) and the Zondagochtend Concert (‘Sunday morning concert’). The Radio Filharmonisch Orkest and the Groot Omroepkoor (Netherlands Radio Choir), which form part of the SOM, account for the lion’s share of the concerts in these series. With these three series and two ensembles, the SOM is the custodian of five leading icons of both tradition and innovation, partly thanks to its constructive and intensive cooperation with the NTR, AVROTROS and NPO Radio 4. We produce from our own premises, the Muziekcentrum van de Omroep (Broadcasting Music Centre), a listed building housing both permanent and temporary organisations which programme a number of successful concert series. The SOM produces at least 75 concerts a year for the broadcasting series. The ensembles under the SOM umbrella also put on productions elsewhere and, subject to their series schedules, give performances outside the context of their broadcasting activities. The Groot Omroepkoor is a professional symphonic choir with 60 core members. Led by its choirmaster Klaas Stok, it has occupied a prominent position in the Dutch music scene since 1945. The Groot Omroepkoor plays an important role in the NPO concert series. It also collaborates frequently with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as with foreign orchestras that visit the Netherlands. The Groot Omroepkoor performs the great symphonic choral works, ranging from the Romantic era to the present day.
