Research
The research part of the science project is when you research and find all the
information that you can about your project (question). You can use books, the
internet, experts, magazines or videos to obtain information. You want to learn
everything you can about your project (question) so you can make an educated
hypothesis (prediction) about the answer to your science project question. Here
are some research questions you need to answer about your project. Remember
you need to use 2 books and 1 internet source.
1. There are two classifications of trees, what are they called and what are
the characteristics of both? ______________________________________

2. Why are trees important to our environment? _______________________

3. How many different types of trees are there approximately?

Hypothesis
The hypothesis is where you make a prediction about your science fair project
experiment. You look at your question and then make an educated guess/answer on
what you think will happen. For example your question is: Which classification of
trees is in my community? So, you answer that question based on what you learned
when you did your research. So you will want to determine what classification of
trees you think you have in your community. Look at your research question #1
Write your hypothesis below.
Based on my research I believe my neighborhood has ______________

Materials
This is where you list every item you need to complete the science project/
experiment.

3
Experiment (Procedure/ steps)
This where you list each step of the experiment, you would want to make sure to
list every step. If another person wants to recreate your experiment they need to
be able to follow the steps you listed. I have listed the steps for you.
1. Using a tree identification book (you can check one out at the public
library), determine what kind of trees are in your community. You will
want to identify at least 10 different types of trees. You will want to
2. After you have identified the tree count as many of them as you can
in your community. Record your results in the data table of the results
section.
3. Complete the conclusion questions.
Data and Results
Type of Tree
Number of trees you
counted in community
Is this tree deciduous or
coniferous/evergreen?
5
Conclusion
This is the part of the project where you look at your experiment and the data/
results and write 1-2 pages of what you learned from your experiment, you make
conclusions of what you discovered. For our science project you will need to
answer a few questions. Use complete sentences, with capitals and correct
punctuation.
1. What type of tree occurs most frequently in your community? _____________
_____________________________________________________________
2. Is the tree that occurred most in your community a deciduous or
coniferous/evergreen? ___________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________
3. What is your favorite tree that you found in your community, please tell me 1
reason why you like this tree. ______________________________________
_____________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________
_____________________________________________________________
4. Do you think that your community would look different without trees? Explain
what would be different about your community if it had no trees. ___________

Bibliography
The bibliography is where you list all the resources that you used while completing
your science fair project. I listed the science fair project book that I used to get
this experiment for you. Please list your 2 books and 1 internet source that you
used for your project. You could use and list more but must have the minimum 2
books and 1 internet source. My book I am listing does not count for your
resources.

Journal
The journal is the part of the science fair project where the scientist keeps their
notes or journal entries of their thoughts during the science experiment/ project.
Every time your child works on their science fair project have them make an entry
in their journal. They can talk about what they did, what they are going to next,
what they found out, something they want to find out, and anything else they want
to write about, as long as it has to do with their science project/ experiment. The
longer the experiment, the more journal entries you will have.
Example journal entry:
December 6, 2012
Today my teacher passed out the science fair packets. There are seven different
experiments that I can choose to do. I think I would like to learn about the
different trees in my community. I can’t wait to begin my science fair project
with my mom and dad..
