PRELIMINARY LIST
OF
JEWISH SOLDIERS AND SAILORS
WHO SERVED IN THE
SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR
JEWS IN THE SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR
INTRODUCTION
At the Seventh Annual Meeting of the American Jewish
Historical Society held at Philadelphia December 20, 1898,
it was announced that Dr. J. H. Hollander, of the Johns
Hopkins University, Baltimore, had been requested to collect details respecting the names, ranks and services of Jews
who were in the United States Army and Navy during the
Spanish-American War.
Later on it was arranged that the preliminary list should
appear in the American Jewish Year Book for 1900-1901,
with the understanding that the final list would be published
by the American Jewish Historical Society.
About the beginning of the present year, Dr. Hollander
formulated a plan and began the work, when he. was requested to go to Porto Rico for what was supposed to be a
temporary service. I agreed to carry on the correspondence,
meanwhile intending to turn the work over to Dr. Hollander
upon his return. A little later came his appointment to
the very honorable post of Treasurer of Porto Rico and the
necessity for his relinquishnient of work upon this list.
I accordingly determined to continue it. The sources for
the present list are as follows: For officers of the Army and
Navy, the official registers; for non-commissioned officers
and enlisted men in the Army and Navy, the Jewish newspapers and private information, since the War Department
muster-rolls are inaccessible; for the volunteer troops organized by the various States, the rosters where published and
again private information and the Jewish press. There are
scores of individuals all over the country to whom I am indebted for important aid. Their names will be given in the
final publication. Where names are starred, I have no evi-
.328
AMERICAN JEWISH YEAR BOOK
dence that the persons are Jews, and have judged simply by
the name; this statement does not apply to the New York
State list, where practically no stars are given, although the
Jewish identity has not been established in every case. If,
perchance, men who are not Jews find their names in these
lists, I am sure they will not object to being in the company
of those with whom they suffered privations and fought for
a common country.
To save persons who will be called upon to criticize this
list any trouble or undue expenditure of time, I will point
out some of its most glaring defects. It is inconsistent and
inconvenient in arrangement; it contains names which should
have been omitted, and omits names which should have been
included; it frequently gives names incorrectly or with insufficient data or under wrong commands, and it even contains
some repetitions. These faults are mentioned so that those
who might otherwise be obliged to give their time in discoving them will use it in aiding me to correct them.
It may not be unnatural for some readers to enquire why.
if the Editor was conscious of all these faults, the publication
of the list was not delayed until it could be made more perfect, and the answer is, that the improvement by waiting
would have been inconsiderable, but a publication of this
rough list at once gives the opportunity whilst the war and
the organization of regiments and companies is fresh in
mind to the five thousand and more members of the Jewish
Publication Society of America to aid in its correction and
improvement. Every Jew in the United States is interested
in this work, and each one can do something toward it. Will
they send their corrections at as early a date as possible to the
address given below?

MASSACHUSETTS
PREPARED BY PHILIP TWOKOGER
The Jews of Massachusetts, during the late Spanish-American
war, were not a whit behindhand in displaying- their patriotism;
immediately after the declaration of war in April, 1898, scores
of Jewish young men applied at the various armories throughout the State, but owing to the fact that the militia organization of Massachusetts is so thorough, but a small proportion of
the applicants were accepted, nevertheless there were about 100
Jewish young men from Massachusetts who wore Uncle Sam's
uniform during- the war.
Owing to the fact that the muster rolls are now in use at the
Adjutant-General's office, and will not be open for public inspection before September 15th, the writer has been unable to obtain
the names of all the Hebrews serving in the various regiments,
but by inquiry among the various regimental officers who served
during the last war he has been able to get the number of
Jewish young men in each of the regiments.
The 1st Massachusetts Regiment Heavy Artillery, which was
the first volunteer regiment mustered into the United States
service, contained 11 Jews, divided among the various batteries
as follows: Battery B, 3; Battery E, 2; Battery L, 1; Battery I, 3;
Battery K, 2.
The 3d Massachusetts Regiment, which served in Cuba, and
r,(iG
AMERICAN JEWTRI-T YEAR BOOK
was brigaded together with Tlst New York Regiment, contained
7 Jews, 2 from Springfield in Company K, :i from Worcester, 1 in
Company A and 2 in Company H; 2 from Northampton in Company I.
In the 6th Massachusetts Regiment, the writer himself served,
and he is therefore able to give the names of those who served
with him. It contained five (5) Jews, divided among the various
companies as follows:
P H I L I P TWOROGER, of Boston, in Company A.
JOHN HAMBERG, of Adams, in Company B'.
JACOB OSTREICHER, of Lowell, in Company C.
BENJAMIN BAKER, of Lowell, in Company'C.
ALFRED J. HERMANSON, of Boston, in Company H.
The 6th Regiment left Charleston, S. C, on the Yale, which
carried General Miles to Cuba on July 8, 1898, and was at
Santiago, but owing to the fact t h a t Santiago surrendered, was
not landed; the regiment, however, was taken to Porto Rico, being the first American regiment to be landed on t h a t island, and
took p a r t in the engagement at Guanica on July 26, 1898.
The 9th Massachusetts Regiment contained a larger proportion
of Jews than any other Massachusetts Regiment, owing' to
the fact t h a t it is almost exclusively a Boston regiment; there
were twenty-two (22) Jews in t h a t regiment. The 9th Regiment took p a r t in the battle of Santiago, being brigaded with
the 1st District of Columbia Volunteers.
The 8th Massachusetts Regiment, which was not fortunate
enough to do active service, contained onlj' two (2) Jews, both
in Company I of Lynn.
The 5th Massachusetts Regiment, which was not called into
the United States Service until the second call for volunteers,
and which did not see active service, contained eight (8) Jews,
divided as follows: Company E, of Medford, three (3); Company
F, two (2); Company L, two (2); Company M, one (1).
There were also ten (10) Jews in the Massachusetts Naval
Militia, and a large number of them enlisted at Boston during
the war and served in the Regular Army.
In addition to the above, there was an independent company
composed exclusively of Hebrews formed in Boston, of which
Samuel H. Borofsky, present representative to the Massachusetts Legislature from the Sixth Suffolk District, was Captain,
but owing to the fact of the short duration of the war, this
company was never mustered into the United States service.

JEWISH STATISTICS
The statistics of Jews in the world rests largely upon estimates. In Russia, Austria-Hungary, Germany, and a few other
countries official figures are obtainable. In the main, however,
the numbers given are based upon estimates repeated and added
to by one statistical authority after another. In spite of the irasatisfactoriness of the method, it may be assumed that the
numbers given are approximately correct. For most countries
the census of 1890 is employed, though where later trustworthy
information is at hand it has been utilized.
THE UNITED STATES
As the census of the United States has, in accordance with the
spirit of American institutions, taken no heed of the religious
convictions of American citizens, whether native-born or naturalized, all statements concerning the number of Jews living
in this country are based upon estimate, though several of the
estimates have been most conscientiously made.

SELECTED HEBRAICA AND JUDATCA
5660
Compiled by ISKAEL ABRAHAMS
The following list contains a selection from works published
during the past year on the Hebrew Bible, the Hebrew language, Biblical and Post-Biblical Jewish theology, literature and
history. Rabbinica and mediaeval and modern Jewish history
and literature are included. The list is arranged alphabetically
liy the authors' names. No articles in Periodicals appear in
this list, and this unfortunately implies the exclusion of much
of first-rate importance. Works on Semitics generally are also
omitted, and the same remark applies to New Testament literature.
