Project description
This project was designed to demonstrate the feasibility of safe CO2 storage in the Redwater Leduc Reef located near the Alberta
Industrial Heartland region, northeast of Edmonton. This storage site is close to several existing and planned large industrial sources of
greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including chemical and fertilizer plants and several oil sands upgraders. Preliminary work estimated
the total storage capacity of the saline aquifer portion of the reef to be one gigatonne of CO2.
Expected outcomes
The short-term outcome of the project was to complete storage site characterization studies and to confirm the geological formation’s
characteristics, capacity and suitability as a long-term storage site. In subsequent phases, the work could be extended to include
pilot injection and scaling pilot injection to a commercial demonstration project. Over the long term, possible outcomes include
demonstrating carbon capture and storage on a commercial scale (several megatonnes per year) and contributing to significant
reductions in GHG emissions.
