EVENT
Life Before the Dinosaurs
Step back in time 290 million years when bizarrelooking animals dominated life on land and sea, and
find out about the greatest extinction the world has
ever seen in Permian Monsters: Life before the Dinosaurs.
This unique exhibition brings the past back to life with
fossilized skeletons and full size life models of the
animals that ruled the world millions of years before
the age of dinosaurs, in a time known as the Permian.
The exhibition blends art and science with a collection
of new artwork which offers a glimpse back in time
through the eyes of award winning paleo-artist Julius
Csotonyi. View fossilised skeletons and reconstructed
models of these amazing but bizarre creatures that
dominated land and sea; and dig and identify fossils in
the interactive dig pits throughout the exhibition.
Admission $5pp, Adults at Children’s price.

BOOTCAMP: Crazy Science
Professional Learning (PL) for
Teachers Imagine a PL session
ATTENTION
TEACHERS
involving highly interactive hands-on learning that
shows you REAL activities to engage your students in
learning science concepts.
A hands-on PL session where YOU learn the
knowledge and skills to teach science concepts to kids
in a FUN and interactive manner. A session in which
you get to take home a science tool kit of goodies to
use with your class.
The Crazy Scientist is a teacher who understands the
time constraints and challenges of a teacher. He knows
how important (and hard) it is to get kids interested in
learning science concepts and will show you how using
amazing materials (most of which you take home)
together with tips and tricks can be used to ‘hook’ the
kids into learning science with ease.
The session jumps right into the high energy, hands-on
learning needed to engage reluctant and enthusiastic
learners alike, in the usual The Crazy Scientist style.
Perfect experience for beginning teachers or more
experienced teachers looking for that new spark.

National Science Week Lecture - Harnessing
the Oceans Energy for our Electricity An often
overlooked renewable energy resource is the power
of ocean waves and currents, and tidal movements.
Harnessing energy from the regular movement of
large amounts of water could provide cheap electricity
to power small coastal communities. The available
resource of wave energy alone is in the order of 15
percent of the global energy demand. So what are
the researchers at the Australian Maritime College
working on that could help this become a reality?
Join Associate Professor Irene Penesis, of the National
Centre for Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics,
University of Tasmania, as she guides us through
ocean energy technologies that could harness ocean
energy to create a sustainable source of unlimited
power.

More than Maps: Technology improves
understanding of our landscape Modern
map-making is very different from the old days when
a surveyor used a compass, telescope and sextant to
describe the land. Modern maps contain information
gathered using various technologies like aerial
photography and thermal imagery. This information
can be combined, allowing us to produce more
informative maps of our environment, which in turn
allows us to better manage our environment.
