Gaye Adams - Canada House Gallery

Canada House Gallery
Presents:
Sat May 7 1 - 5 pm ROBERT GENN – Bugaboo 10
Exhibition runs May 4 – 17
Renowned painter & author, this Canadian art icon returns to the Rockies for inspiration and to allow us the privilege to celebrate his
talent. In September 2010, Robert Genn took 10 friends and fellow painters into the Bugaboos with CMH Summer Adventures for the
ultimate mountain painting experience. There, the artists/friends were inspired by each other and the spectacular vistas. This
exhibition features Robert Genn’s works resulting from this inaugural heli-painting experience plus 1 painting from each of his 10
friends, thus the exhibition is titled BUGABOO 10.
Robert Genn SFCA
Robert Genn's work is well known internationally and he is recognized as one of Canada's most accomplished painters.
His manner of portraying subjects along Canada’s West Coast has received acclaim in North America and throughout the
world. Robert Genn has painted in most parts of Canada as well as in South America, the U.S.A., Europe and the Orient.
Robert Genn works mainly in acrylic paint on canvas. He likes to put his own stamp on nature’s grand themes. His
techniques include a tradition of strong design: harmonic patterns and colour arrangements that poignantly capture the
essence of the composition. His personal style is unmistakable, as grand themes are often translated and transformed
into small panels in a manner reminiscent of several of the Group of Seven members. Although the influence of this
group and their contemporaries is evident in his paintings, Robert has successfully extended many of their techniques as
he produces images that are distinctively refreshing in design and colour. His paintings can be found in major collections
throughout North America and Europe.

Nathan Cao
Canadian artist Nathan Cao paints landscapes with Western realism perspective while pursuing the beauty of serenity of
the East. His paintings depict poetic natural scenery with purity and tranquility. Passionate about sketching and painting
since childhood, he worked with textile design and fashion industries from the 1980s to the beginning of 1990s. This
allowed him to travel and visit many museums and galleries in China, Paris, Vienna, Rome, Milan, Florence, and many
other European cities, inspiring him with the masterpieces of classical and contemporary artists.
After moving to Alberta in 1991, Nathan has renewed his pursuit of sketching and painting. Working mainly in oil, acrylic,
pencil and charcoal sketch, and Chinese ink painting, his plein air painting and travel expeditions have been exploring
the ways to express his deep affinity for the Canadian West landscapes and its environment.
For more than twenty years, Nathan Cao has dedicated part of his time in Art Education through lectures, art classes,
and television presentations. His students have won many national and provincial art competitions in Canada for the last

Don Hodgins FCA
Don Hodgins lives on Salt Spring Island, where he actively pursues his interest in painting. Don was born in Ottawa in
1945, and developed an early interest in drawing and painting through encouragement from his father. He studied art in
high school, and drew inspiration from regular visits to the National Gallery of Canada, where the Group of Seven
collection held special interest.
Don went on to university gaining degrees in civil engineering and physical oceanography. He was fortunate in 1974 to
have an opportunity to study in Europe, and over the next three years visited many of the major European art galleries in
England, Scotland, Holland, France, Italy, Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. These gallery visits provided remarkable
exposure to paintings and sculpture from the old masters to the major movements in 20th century art -- and they kept his
interest in art growing over a period when time to practice was in short supply.
Following a career in consulting engineering, Don returned to painting in 2002. His current interests center on portrait,
figurative and sport action artwork in a representational style. Don is an Associate Signature Member of the Federation
of Canadian Artists and a member of the Salt Spring Island Painters' Guild.

Carmen Miller
Carmen was born and raised in Athabasca, AB and has always enjoyed the outdoors and wilderness. Her passion for art began at a
very early age and for many years she decorated cakes, painted, and taught ceramics and has now settled painting on canvas.
Carmen became a member of the 'Foothills Art Club' in May 2004. Shortly after joining, she participated in creating their logo as an
active member and was Vice President of the Club in 2006. Pursuing an active life style and her quest to improve her painting skills
and repertoire, she departed the club. She has participated in various art workshops and courses with artists such as Lori PullmanMacDonald, a realist painter and David Kitler, a wildlife artist. She also completed courses in drawing, painting, and mixed media
with Suzanne Northcott. Other local artists, Doug Levitt, a western artist and Dr. B.K. Remington, creator of western and wildlife
creations in leather supported and encouraged her experimentation with painting,
Carmen loves to learn various techniques of applying paint through experimenting and the discussion and observation of other
artists. The majority of her painting resources come from photos that she or her husband has taken or her still life drawings. Although
she may pull different items from various photos and incorporate them through different concepts, she creates a single work of art.
She prefers to have her own reference material in which to paint from. Her favorite medium is open acrylics; she finds them forgiving
and very easy to work with. Color washes, thick brush strokes, lift-off, or layering techniques are easy to manage with open acrylics
especially if applying with different techniques: crinkled plastic, stamping, tissue papering, stippling, sponging, and sgraffito. Most
recently she has been painting with oils.
In 2010, she experienced painting en plein air spending time in the Rocky Mountains and Columbia Valley Mountain ranges via
hiking and helicopter flights taking along her prochaud box as her new best tool. She loved it there so much she is booked again for
another excursion in Sept 2011. She resides outside of Cochrane and is employed part time as a Registered Nurse in Calgary, AB.

Tatjana Mirkov-Popovich
I discovered and fell in love with the Canadian Pacific North West in 1994, when I immigrated to Canada and made my
home in Vancouver area, in BC. My childhood in a small charming mid-European town overlooking river Danube was
filled with reading and drawing. The years of growing up, however, took a direction of science, ending up with a
Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
Immigration to Canada and a career in technology took a significant part of my life. After many years of my internal artist
being bottled up, it was the high time for the "real me" to get unleashed. I took intensive art training in the Vancouver Art
Academy from 1998 to 2002, which opened up the magical door of art to me.
I joined the Federation of Canadian Artists in 2002 and became actively involved in the art community. After several
years of serving on the FCA Board of Directors, I was elected the President in 2008. I am a senior member of the
Canadian Institute of Portrait Artists since 2005 and a senior member of the FCA since 2009. My work has been
exhibited and collected since 2002.
In my art, I explore the past and present worlds and connections between them.
The road of art is long, and the journey is full of delights. For all this happiness I thank my best friend, my supporter, my
mentor, my model, my great love forever, my husband Sinisa. My paintings are an invitation to you to share the joy of
art.

Louise Swan
Louise was born in Ontario. In her early twenties while working in Washington, DC and Virginia she took classes at the
University of Virginia in acrylics and got hooked on painting. Many of her works are inspired by her early roots, spending
much of her youth on or in the water. Her love of nature, water, animals and scenery has inspired her to capture this
beauty on canvas. Louise’s painting style is treasured for its captivating reality and acute attention to detail expressing
the wonders of lighting, contrast and shadow.
Louise’s work has been influenced over the years through study with internationally known artists including Brian Atyeo,
Tony Couch, Tim Deibler, Robert Genn, David Goatley, Brent Laycock, Mark Hobson, Diane Maxey, Gordon MacKenzie,
Claudia-Jean McCabe, Stephen Quiller, Michael O’Toole, Janice Robertson, Brigitte Schreyer, Mike Svob, Liz Wiltzen,
Alan Wylie and others.
Louise lives in British Columbia where her acrylic, oil and watercolour painting are sold, held in private collections and
commissioned by fine art enthusiasts of her work internationally. As an active status and juried artist member of the
Federation of Canadian Artists, she continues to explore new ways of expressing her love of painting.

Elizabeth Wiltzen
Elizabeth's hiking, climbing and skiing expeditions were her initial inspiration to begin a career in art. Over time, her experiences
have made her intimately aware of the magic and beauty that is present in the natural world, and in painting she has found an
instrument to convey her reverence for it.
For 15 years Elizabeth explored watercolour, but in 2003 she became intrigued with oil painting in her pursuit of new and continually
challenging ways to share her perceptions, and in this medium she has found a channel that more clearly enables her to express her
personal artistic vision. “Oils free me to explore adventurously and confidently, giving me the opportunity to change things on an
ongoing basis as the painting unfolds and finds its own voice.”
Throughout her career Elizabeth has discovered what invigorates, captivates and entertains her is challenge. Therefore, while
continuing to pursue her love of landscape, she has added still life and figurative work to her subject matter painting directly from
life has become her approach of choice. There are nuances in painting from life that cannot be addressed when painting from
photographs, and she finds this pushes her to see at a more sophisticated level, keeping the process continually stimulating,
engaging and rewarding.
While being primarily self taught, she attributes much of her success to the valuable influence of the prominent artists with whom
she has studied, combining their guidance with her dedication to developing a style of her own. She has exhibited in numerous solo,
group and juried exhibitions, has garnered international recognition and awards and is in demand as a workshop instructor.
Elizabeth is a member of the Oil Painters of America, and a signature member of the Society of Canadian Artists, the Canadian
Society of Painters in Watercolour, and the Federation of Canadian Artists.
