Self-Advocacy: Speak for Yourself!

Feeling apprehensive about talking with your
professors, asking for assistance, or just not
confident in your skills to speak for yourself? Refine
your ability to meet your personal needs in ways
that do not compromise the dignity of oneself or
others. Come to this self-advocacy workshop!

Praxis/PPST Preparation
Facilitators: Nick Jakusz, Math Specialist/Advisor;
and Margaret Kitze, Writing Specialist
To receive admission into the College of Education at
UW-Stout, you must first pass the general Praxis
test. This all-inclusive ongoing workshop will cover:
finding your way around the Praxis website, test
format options, state requirements for passing, fees,
how to register for the test, and more. Nick and
Margaret will be providing additional ongoing
tutoring support throughout the semester based on
individual need, just schedule time(s) at the ASPIRE
front desk!

This workshop will cover everything you need to
make the most out of your hard work both inside
and out of the classroom. Topics include: note
taking, memory enhancement, exploring your
learning style, tips to reduce test anxiety and more!

Math and Statistics
Algebra/Computational Skills (Ongoing) Workshop
Facilitator: Nick Jakusz, Math Specialist/Advisor
Are you taking an algebra course (i.e. Math 010, 110,
118, or 120) next semester? Want help preparing
for the skills you will need to be successful in the
course? This ongoing workshop is for you!
For computational skills: You will be given an indepth review of basic concepts necessary for success
in an introductory math course. Areas to be covered
include: fractions, decimals, percent, proportions,
signed numbers, and word problems. This workshop
is for those students who are required to take an
algebra course, but need review work first. Areas to
be covered include: integers, exponents, radicals,
and word problems.

Preparing for Statistics 130

Statistics is a required course for many majors
here at UW-Stout. If you have never taken
statistics, this will be a great workshop for you.
We will cover a review of material your professor
expects you to know before entering statistics, an
overview of what to expect in the course, tips to
reduce anxiety and special stats study skills.

sentence errors, this might be the workshop for
you. Join us for an hour to clarify the rules for
these common problems on the day that works
best for you.

run-on sentence
• Review common punctuation rules

errors

The Essay Paper versus the Essay Exam

Do you DREAD hearing your teacher assign an
essay paper or essay test? Are you interested in
getting better at writing papers and tests? This
workshop might be for you. Join us for an hour of
instruction about writing the essay paper and
writing the essay test on the day that works best
for you. Review structure, see examples, ask
questions, and pick up some tips for making your
writing clear, concise, and interesting.

of an essay paper and an essay test
• Learn how to make a plan for writing
• Learn how to make the paper long enough
• Learn helpful strategies for the PPST writing
component

letters of recommendation. Your personal statement
is likely one of the most difficult essays you will ever
write. Who are the right people to ask for letters?
With proper planning and careful attention to detail,
both can add strength to your application. Join us for
a workshop outlining personal statements and a
discussion about recommendation letters.

presentation with step-by-step instructions for

process can be quite overwhelming; let us help you
make sense of it.

“One Survivor Remembers” Forum at UWEC

Gerda Weissmann Klein is a Polish-born American
writer and human rights activist and Holocaust
Survivor. Gerda recounts her six-year ordeal as a
victim of Nazi cruelty, including the loss of her
parents, brother, friends, home, possessions, and
community.
