E-Safety Fortnight
like to thank PC Mike Taylor for all his
help and support over the fortnight,
also the parents/ex-parents in our ESafety working group – Mrs Viv Arthur,
Dr Elaine Booth and Mrs Nicola Cruden.
For those parents who missed the
event, leaflets created by the ESafety Working Group are available
from the school office.
The key
message is to check your child’s online
activity and talk to your child about
their lives online. The leaflet includes
places
to
access
support
or
information.
If you require any
further information please contact Mrs
Grugeon.
 Valentine’s Disco
SFSA are running a disco on Friday 17th
February at the village hall from 67:30pm. There will be some ‘added
extras’ we have ‘Photohoot’ Photobooth
so children will have a memento of the
occasion! Thank you for the positive
response for helpers, Suzie will be in
touch and if you are not contacted this
time you will contacted to help at
future events.
Please remember ALL children MUST
be collected. Parents are asked to be
patient in this as we must ensure all
children
are
collected
safely,
therefore we will dismiss one class
group at a time. ALL P1 parents must
stay for the duration of the disco. The
entry costs £2 please take small
change for the tuck shop.
Our E-Safety whole school focus over
the past two weeks has been an
overwhelming success as well as
conveying a vitally important message
to all children and families. We would
P5/6 and P6/7 BBC Science Live
Show
Thank you to Mrs Robertson for
organising the BBC Science Live Show.

I liked the live lesson because we were
learning at the same time as the
children in the studio. – Reuben
I liked it when they set the food on
fire. – Cameron
I enjoyed how we could interact with
them. – Ross
I liked how over the week we have been
taking part and I have learned some
crazy facts. – Alfie
It was like they were in our classroom
but on the smartboard. – Kaitlyn
I really enjoyed watching the live
lesson I learned that a blue whales
tongue is the same weight as an
average elephant! – Keira
I learned that inside a human the small
intestine is 6.5m long. – Campbell
 Topics
Each class learn through various
themes over the course of the session.
Read on to find out the exciting
learning that is taking place!
P1 are learning about living things and
how they depend on each other through
their topic ‘Rumble in the Jungle’. They
have been learning about living and nonliving things. They created a pet fact
file and have made an exciting jungle
explorers hut in the classroom. The
story of Elmer was shared with nursery
and children have been looking at real
elephants and learning about African
and Indian ones. They have got really
exciting plans for the weeks ahead!
P2 are learning about the body. So far
they have made a body labelling the
main organs. They made a giant ear,
mouth, eye and brain before learning
about taste. There have been some
very scientific reports written about
the taste test and children learned
about the importance of saliva and
tastes. The weeks to follow will be
focusing on the senses.
P3 are learning about Scottish history
through their topic ‘Castles’.
They
have been finding out about how
castles are made and what they were
used for. Next they will be finding out
about the people who lived in castles,
learning about knights, mottos and
chivalry.
been making some detailed mosaics too.
P6/7 are learning about the world
through their ‘Guitar Hero Tour’.
Firstly they have been concentrating on
Scotland, focusing on the landscape and
mapping before they embark on their
world tour!
Then they will be
comparing Scotland to another country.
P4/5 are learning about how people live
today and in the past through their
‘Pirates’ theme. Children have been
finding out about some famous pirates
for their pirate passports, organising a
timeline and writing some creative
stories on being shipwrecked. Children
will be learning all about crime and
punishment too!
If you can help with any of these topics
in anyway please contact the school
office and let us know.
P5/6 are studying the past through
learning about Ancient Rome. They
have been finding out about Roman
soldiers and the army. They have also
 Questionnaires
Thank you to those who returned the
parental questionnaires which form
part of our quality assurance. This is
just one of the many ways we take
parental views into account.
Any
trends of responses are noted and
improvements are made. We also ask
for comments at school events and
have a suggestion box located at the
front vestibule where notes can be left
sharing any ideas or giving feedback.
We have an open door policy, if you
have
any
queries,
concerns
or
compliments. Mrs Grugeon and Mrs
Sutherland would be delighted to
arrange a mutually convenient time to
discuss any issues to support families in
ensuring St Fergus School is an
excellent school for your children.
If you have any ideas for how we could
ask for views and show that these are
taken into account please contact Mrs
Grugeon/Mrs Sutherland to share
these.
benefitted from some introduction
sessions for August intakes before the
summer, this will be organised for next
session during May/June. Thank you
for all your responses and feedback.
We received 38 responses from the 89
families in school, this is a 43% return
rate.
Nursery celebrated Robbie Burns Day
in lots of different ways. The made
Scottish flags, had haggis, neeps and
tatties for snack, made their own
tartan and Shortbread. They were
dancing to Scottish music and recited
the poem ‘The Highland Coo’. Have a
look in the children’s profiles to see
the fun they had!
Almost all responses noted that they
either strongly agreed or agreed with
all statements. Thank you so much for
your positive feedback, this greatly
encourages staff. We also appreciate
any ideas of how to improve.
We will strive to continue to publicise
the many out of class clubs and
opportunities available for pupils. In
the better weather The Gardening Club
will commence, The Choir and Music
Club is strongly supported. The Bible
Club numbers are continuing to rise.
Pupil participation groups are continuing
to have a positive impact through the
work done by Junior Road Safety
Officers, Pupil Council, E-Safety and
Digital Leaders. Our magazine group
will begin work on their second edition
soon. This session we have Active
School clubs, Zumba and Hockey. If
your children are interested in taking
part in any of these clubs/groups ask
them to ask their class teacher or Mrs
Grugeon/Mrs Sutherland about getting
involved.
 Nursery News (ELCC)
Nursery questionnaires received 6
responses from 18 families, this is a
33% return rate. 100% of responses
either agreed or strongly agreed with
all statements.
One comment
mentioned that their child would have
P1 visited for Elmer day and everyone
wore colourful clothes. P1 read the
Elmer stories to children in nursery as
part of the transition between nursery
and P1.
