California Drought! Chase Kneller, Staff Reporter Aleen Khedesian, Staff Reporter Guess what’s coming up? It’s the spookiest time of the year - it’s the Seaside Monster Mash! If you paid your PTA membership, then you will gain free access to this awesome event. The Monster Mash goes from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, October 30th, in the Kindergarten playground. Are you new to the school and don’t know what the Monster Mash is? The Monster Mash is when kids come to school in their costumes and dance, play games, eat, and of course, have fun! Last year there were games like:Twister and ring toss, and they give free prizes to the winners. There will be food for sale, including: hot dogs, popcorn and treats by the Fifth Grade Champs as well as glow toys. A DJ will be there with his cool music, rad lights, and there will be crazy dancing. It is always a blast for the kids and even the parents. Come to this year’s Monster Mash! Hello Seaside! Some of you might not know that California is currently in a drought for the fourth year in row. The word ”drought” means that the earth does not get rain for a long period of time. Some of the things that can waste a lot of water are grassy lawns, leaky faucets, and taking long showers. Here are few little things you can do to help save water. Take shorter showers, turn the faucet off when you brush your teeth, and while you rub your hands with soap. Let’s all be kind to our environment and help save water. Photo by: Allison Hamilton & Abigail Peterson How Halloween Started! Pranathi Senthil-Kumaran & Rebecca Hsu, Staff Reporters The legend of Halloween states, that on November 1st, spirits of the dead would move between their world and our world. They called this day Samhain. The Celts would provide sweets and offerings to the spirits to keep them away. This later evolved into Trick-or-Treating. Eventually, the Christians came and told them what they were worshiping was bad. Then they changed the name Samhain to All Saints Day, which turned into All Hallows Eve, which became Halloween. Later on, the Irish immigrated to America and spread the holiday of Halloween nationwide. Kids dress up as many different monsters and other creatures because of the tradition that in which the Celts dress up to scare the bad spirits away. Jack-o-lanterns are a symbol of the mean spirits. They are named after a myth called Stingy Jack. Halloween isn’t proved to be an actual holiday, so it’s just a day for kids to have fun. The Heat! Lilly Pirotto Staff Reporter The heat! It can be hard to be active at recess and it may feel like you want to sleep. You should always sit and rest if you get a headache. The water fountains around the school aren’t just sitting there for no reason; they’re there for you to drink water. You should be drinking at least the amount of two small sized water bottles a day. Make sure you sit out a round or a few minutes of what you playing if you get hot. Don’t wear to much black! The color black sucks up the most heat in the air making it the hottest color. White is the best color to wear because it reflects of the most heat. Remember to drink lots and lots of water! Who Am I? WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO BE FOR HALLOWEEN? Isabella Pirotto, Staff Reporter Halloween is coming up, and people are figuring out who or what they’re going to be. But, not everyone can decide on which cute Halloween costumes is for their animals (pets). I have created a survey on the cutest animal Halloween costumes, to help all those humans with their loveable pets. The cutest animal Halloween costume turned out to be a banana, with a high score of twenty votes. The bee buzzed its way to second place, with a score of fifteen votes. The teddy bear crawled its way into third, with a score of five votes. There was a tie between the panda and the present in fourth, with four votes each. st 1 2 nd rd 3 th 4 th 4 Google Has a New Logo! Keira Ungar, Staff Reporter Have you noticed that Google’s new logo changed from a fancy Serif font to a more basic Sans-serif font? Google says that the new logo will be rolling out across all their products. Google has changed their trademark g to a capitol G. You can see it now by going to Google.com. You might be wondering what the difference between a Serif font and a Sans-serif font is. Well a Serif font is a fancy font like the old Google logo. You can tell a Serif font by the little feet on letters like m and n. A Sans-serif font is a more modern font. The Serif font originated as a font they used in the Latin alphabet. Serif font is mostly th th used for body text. The first Sans-serif font used was in the 18 century. It became popular in the 19 century. About 3.5 billion people see Google’s logo every day. That’s more people than any other logo. If Google didn’t have this nice logo maybe people wouldn’t want to see it every day. Think about other logos you see on stores and products. Google’s logo is important because a company’s logo is what gives people a first impression. Where at Seaside?
