Ellen Ochoa
(1958-)
Dr. Ochoa
became an
astronaut in
1991 and flew
four shuttle missions. She holds 3
patents and, in 2012, was the first
Hispanic and second woman to be
the director of the Johnson Space
Center in Houston.

Laura I. Gomez
Founding member
of Twitter, Ms.
Gomez was
undocumented
until college. Trilingual (English, Spanish and
Portuguese) she expanded Twitter
en Español and 50 other languages.
On this date in 2014,
the MAVEN (Mars
Atmosphere and
Volatile EvolutioN)
spacecraft arrived at
Mars. It was launched
on November 18, 2013.
Mario J. Molina
(1943-)
In 1974 Dr. Molina
shared his findings
that CFC’s were
impacting the
ozone layer (stratosphere). In 1995,
he was received the Nobel Prize in
Chemistry (with Dr. Rowland.)
Today is the Autumnal
Equinox. The Sun is
directly over the
equator providing
roughly an equal
amount of solar energy
in both hemispheres.
Day and Night are about
the same length.

Co-founder of

who developed
the Ride app that helps commuters
find carpools.
1980: The Ethernet,
now known as local area
networks (LAN)
specifications are
released. It is the
standard networking
found in homes and
businesses.

Jose Hernandez-Rebollar
An electrical engineer, Dr.
Hernandez-Rebollar invented the
AcceleGlove. This gloved robotic
hand translates sign language into

speech in
both English
and Spanish!
In 1947, President
Truman gave the first
White House televised
address. President
Franklin Roosevelt gave
the first televised
address in 1939 at the
World’s Fair in New
York.
Mayra Artiles
Ms. Artiles was a thermal engineer
for the Ford Motor Company. Her
work included recovering heat from
the engine to turn into electricity in
hybrid cars. She is currently
pursuing a PhD
from Virginia
Tech.
In 1950, Willis Carrier
died. Carrier was the
inventor of
manufactured weather
also known as air
conditioning.
1947: 200-inch
telescope lens was
finished after 11 years
of grinding and
polishing.

Benjamin Banneker
was born. Banneker,
self-taught in math and
science surveyed
Washington, D.C.
creating the network of
streets we have today.
He finished what
L’Enfant started.

A geophysical mathematician, Dr.
Gonzalez works in the oil industry
using seismic data into 3D images to
help oil companies decide where to
drill.

Edwin Abbott, author
of Flatland died.
Flatland (1884) is a
book the uses
geometric figures to
represent the hierarchy
of Victorian culture.

Alberto Calderón (1920-1998)
Dr. Calderón is considered one of
the most influential mathematicians
of the 20th century. He developed
the Calderón-Zygmund theory of
singular integrals.

In 2010, Benoit
Mandelbrot, who
introduced the
importance of fractals in
math and nature, died.
He helped develop the
field of fractal
geometry.
