BUZZARD CLUB OF AMERICA
HOUSTON CHAPTER NEWSLETTER
OCTOBER 2011
VOLUME 50
ISSUE 10
FOUNDED OCT 1961- ORGANIZED MAY 1963 FOUNDER - THOMAS E. WALTERS, JR
CHIEF BUZZARD - ARLEN DEASON
“Let there be no strangers in the BUZZARD CLUB - Only friends that have yet to meet”
Hello Fellow Buzzards:
This month is the 50th
Anniversary of the Buzzard
Club. Feel free to reminisce with
your fellow buzzards about
tournaments gone by! Not much
else to say, so let’s get to
bowling!
Meeting
Minutes:
Dennis
opened
the
meeting
and
presented the treasurers’ report
which passed. Three new
member applications were voted
on and also passed. The Annual
Tournament
results
were
discussed and the checks were
handed
out.
Dennis
also
mentioned Tyler, the hosting
chapter for the 2012 Annual
Tournament, has already secured
the bowling center and the host
hotel. More information on the
tournament will be later in the
newsletter. Dennis also brought
up that with Houston hosting
2013, we will start forming
committees within the next few
months. I brought up that with
my computer failing in August, I
have created a facebook page,
Buzzard Club of America –
Houston Chapter. Feel free to
come by and join! Also, a copy
of the newsletter is on the
Houston Buzzard club website:
www.houstonbuzzardclub.com
Attendance: We had 45
Buzzards at the gathering in
September including two that
did not bowl and one pacer.
Our next scheduled gathering
is on October 2rd @ Del
Mar Lanes 3020 Mangum
Houston (713) 682-2506.
The meeting begins at 1 PM
and bowling begins at 2 PM
so please be signed up by
1:30 PM.
Bowling Reminder: Please
keep in mind that there are
only two balls per lane during
warm-up and not 10 minutes.
First and last names of
bowlers are to be put on the
re-cap sheets each month.
Also, make sure the total
number of splits and your
games are totaled before you
sign the sheet at the end of
bowling. If you re-qualify,
please make a note on the recap sheet and you can receive
a Buzzard pin for $ 2.00 and
be entered for “THE ELLIE
DEASON
MEMORIAL
THREE – IN – A- ROW
“roll-off in January. Don’t
forget, if you show up to
bowl in your Birthday
month, you pay only $6.
Stupid State Laws:
In Lousiana - according to law,
Biting someone with your natural
teeth is “simple assault,” while
biting someone with your false
teeth is “aggravated assault”.
Monthly Trivia:
The Beatles had their first hit in
1962, with “Love me Do”, and
Started the “British Invasion”
with their arrival in 1964 to the
United States. They set numerous
records including being the best
selling rock band, of all time.
From their first hit in 1962, how
many years were they a group?
HAVE A SAFE AND BOOTIFUL HALLOWEEN!!!

President’s Message
A BIG HAPPY 50th ANNIVERSARY TO THE
BUZZARD CLUB OF AMERICA!!!
AS mentioned in our monthly gatherings and in the newsletters, the 2011-2012 season
marks the 50th year of The Buzzard Club of America that was established in October 1961.
You can go to our website at www.houston buzzardclub.com to read how it all started. We
have asked some of our “senior” members if they have any Memorable moments or trivia they
wish to share. We all have memorable moments, but like that old saying about Las Vegas –
“What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” – we also say “ what happens in our annual
tournament, stays at our annual tournament.”
I can also share some trivia that Arlen has shared with me over the years. Arlen’s mother
and father were original chartered members when the club was formed. Arlen’s mother was
the first female to re-qualify in the club, and his father was the first male to re-qualify.
When Arlen’s Son, Kenneth was born, he was officially named the mascot of the Buzzard
Club of America. And Arlen bowled the last 200 at Winchester Lanes and proudly his
mother was there. Arlen’s mother was in charge of our annual 3-in-a-row roll-off for
those that re-qualified during our monthly gatherings and upon her passing the 3-in-a-row
roll-off was renamed in her honor to “The Ellie Deason Memorial Three-In-A-Row”
roll-off.
I have many fond memories of my time spent with the club – both locally and at our annual
tournaments. I miss the ones no longer with us and look forward to meeting and knowing
new members. So here’s a Birthday wish for the first 50 years and to the next generation of
Buzzard Members.
And as Tom Walters used to say,…..”Until we split again”

FUNNY PAGES AND INTERESTING FACTS
JOKE OF THE MONTH
It was Halloween night when a driver called our
road-service dispatch office complaining that he
was locked out of his car. I forwarded the
information to a locksmith, along with one more
detail: The car was parked at a nudist colony. Of
course, the locksmith arrived in record time. But
when he called in later, he wasn’t amused.
“Figures,” he said. “I finally get to go to a nudist
colony, and they’re having a costume party!”
FAMOUS QUOTES:

ON THIS DATE
On October 2, 1921 – Babe Ruth hits his 59th
Homerun, making a all time record that held for 6
years, being broken by himself in 1927. That
record would then hold for 34 years, until broken by
Roger Maris in 1961.
WEIRD BUT TRUE
Jules' Undersea Lodge is an American hotel
located in Key Largo, Florida and is the only
underwater hotel in the United States. It is 30 deep

of the Emerald Lagoon and was opened in 1986.
The hotel’s name comes from the novelist Jules
Verne of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Scuba
certification is required for entrance as the front
door is located 21 feet under water.

. MORONS
Town of Onondaga, NY – A Parish man who was
participating in a motorcycle helmet protest ride
was killed this afternoon when he went over the
handlebars of his motorcycle and injured his head
on the pavement, state police said. Philip A. Contos,
55, of 45 East St., Parish, was not wearing a helmet
while driving a 1983 Harley Davidson motorcycle
south on Route 11 in Onondaga with a large group
of other motorcyclists, troopers said. About 1:30
p.m., troopers said, Contos hit his brakes, the
motorcycle fishtailed and went out of control and
Contos went over the handlebars. Contos was taken
to Upstate University Hospital where he was
pronounced dead, troopers said. Evidence at the
scene and information from the attending physician
indicate Contos would have survived if he had been
wearing a Department of Transportation approved
helmet, troopers said. The protest in which Contos
was riding was organized by American Bikers
Aimed Towards Education, Trooper Jack Keller
said.
