His yachting career began during his college years in the early 90's when he worked as a lifeguard and sailing instructor at a large beach resort on the west coast of Florida. During summer breaks, he would crew aboard yachts; and he also had the opportunity to sail as a cadet in the US Merchant Shipping Fleet. Upon completing studies at the University of Central Florida, and following up with classes at the Texas A&M Maritime Academy, Rafe acquired his Third Officer Unlimited Upon Oceans License. This gave him the necessary qualifications to secure a position as Third Officer with a large shipping company engaged in foreign trade. He worked his way up to become the Navigation Officer. In 1997 he put the Commercial side of the industry behind him to start sailing as Captain on yachts. He created a great charter following on many of the yachts and eventually fell into the role of Build Captain, and Owners Representative on New Construction projects. Through experience over the course of his career, Rafe has gained extensive knowledge in the operation, management, and general requirements for vessels of all sizes.
