Imperialism and Colonies in Africa


What reasons might a country have for wanting to take over another?
Would you support the United States getting involved in stopping a conflict if we
had nothing to gain from the outcome?
Imperialism - The policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over
foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies. (Can you think
of any examples of Imperial countries?)
Colony - A region politically controlled by a distant country; a dependency. (Can yu
think of any examples of a colony?)
During the Age of Imperialism, Europe viewed the world as their possession. No where
else was this more evident than in India, SE Asia, and Africa. Between 1870 and 1914,
the African continent was carved, sliced, and basically butchered by people who had little
knowledge of the land or the people.
