Newsletter - St Peter`s School York

18 March 2016
Newsletter
I can’t believe we’re nearly at the end of
term and the Easter weekend is just a
few days away. The last two weeks have
certainly been action-packed.
Last week’s J3 production of
Mary Poppins was brilliant; such great
singing, acting, choreography and
foot-tapping fun. The children
thoroughly entertained us and my thanks
in particular to Mrs Adam, Mrs Holmes
and Mrs Spencer.
The J1 International Buffet was a great
excuse for us to taste all sorts of exotic
foods from around the world, whilst also
looking at the children's research on a
particular country. Thank you to all the
parents who brought in food; we
couldn’t have done it without you.
The J2s had a wonderful time on their
sports tour playing Clifton College,
Bristol and Cheltenham College, with a
visit to Bristol Zoo and Cadbury World.
They were such great ambassadors for
the school throughout and lovely
company.
Wow! What a fantastic night of Family
Bingo organised by the Friends on
Saturday. Over 150 people came and
played bingo and ate Domino’s pizzas.
Thank you so much to the Friends,
especially Charlotte, Gilly and Sarah.
There have been some notable sporting
tournament successes this term,
including:
U13 York and District Netball (winners)
U12 A and B York & District Netball
(winners)
U13 North of England In2Hockey
(semi-finalists)
U12 Barnard Castle Netball (finalists)
U13 HSBC Rosslyn Park National Rugby
7s (semi-finalists)
U12 Hymers and St Olave’s Rugby 7s
(finalists)
U11 North of England Boys’ Hockey
finals
U11 HMC North East of England
Swimming, boys and girls (winners)
Our J4s spent this morning carrying out
‘random acts of kindness’ as part of their
Archbishop of York’s Young Leaders
Award community project. They had
made paper flowers, bought stickers and
used their own pocket money to buy
mini Easter eggs, to give out to people
outside York Minster, at York Station
and in St Helen’s Square. The idea was
to surprise people and spread some
happiness at the start of the week,
because as we know, happiness is
contagious!
Habits of Learning
Collaboration, Creativity, Curiosity,
Embracing Challenge, Empathy, Flexible Thinking,
Next week we will have children skiing
in the USA and playing netball in Spain;
amazing opportunities for our pupils. I
am hoping to complete the Rome
Marathon on Sunday 10 April, raising
money for Clifton School’s charity
‘Walking with the Wounded’ (http://
uk.virginmoneygiving.com/
AndyFalconer).
Whatever you are doing over the next
few weeks I hope you have a lovely time
and look forward to hearing all about it
when we start back on
Wednesday 13 April.

J3 Minimus Competition
Inspired by their study of the Trojan War, Oisin, Jack, Kit and Louis in J3Z brought in their LEGO version of the Greek attack on Troy, a
great example of collaboration and creativity.
If you are in J3 and have some spare time over Easter, you may be interested in following their lead and producing something as an entry for
this year’s Minimus competition on the theme of Perseus and Medusa.
Anything creative will tick the box: paper mosaics, painting, LEGO, baking, writing, poetry etc.
Have a look on-line at www.minimus.co.uk (teachers’ page, Mythology competition) for examples of previous entries and competition rules.
ENTRY IS AS AN INDIVIDUAL, NOT A GROUP.
Any work to be photographed and entered should be brought into school after the holiday please. Mrs Benson.
Charity Update
Thank you so much for the fantastic effort with the St Olave’s Big Night In; we have had some really creative ideas. If you haven’t managed to
hold your own Big Night In event during term time, then feel free to arrange something for the Easter holidays. Please bring in your donations
when you come back to school.
Wear a Hat Day
We are supporting Brain Tumour Research (http://www.braintumourresearch.org/) in their Wear A Hat Day this year, although we will be
holding our event a day early, on the last day of term, Wednesday 23 March. We hope to see some fantastic creations. There will be prizes
for the most homemade hats in a House, and some individual prizes for the most effort. Get your thinking hats on! Donations will be
collected in House on Wednesday morning, so please ask your children to bring their money in with them. As we have been supporting
Ward L52 this year we have decided to divide the money that we raise between Brain Tumour Research and Ward L52 at LGI.
Thank you again for all of your fantastic support and there’s still time for a Big Night In.
Miss Morgan.

Happy Easter from Eco Club.
Members of the Eco Club have been growing daffodils
in the school Greenhouse which is attached to the
Science Labs.
They all took a pot home for Mother’s Day and
displayed all the rest in the school Foyer for everyone
to enjoy.
Congratulations to the Juniors who won the
competition for remembering to switch off the most
lights this term but well done to everyone for a
champion effort at saving the planet. Mr Sewill.
Look how Eco Club used your bottle tops to decorate their vegetable beds.

Read about Tanya Landman’s visit to St Olave’s school on
our website page.
The Scholastic Book Fair was a great success and thank
you to all those who supported it. We raised almost
£500 in commission to be spent on books to go into
classrooms and the library.

Our school has been gripped by ‘toilet fever’ this term.
We’ve seen toilet rolls being hurled through hoops, been the butt of dozens of toilet jokes and generally talked about toilets in far too much detail.
The shocking statistics about the lack of sanitation in parts of our world galvanised pupils in all of the Houses into action.
The many and varied fundraising ideas have been amazing. Ainsty and Alcuin focussed on cake sales, crafts and a mini fair complete with tombola,
lucky dip and sweetie jar game. York House organised the magnificent toilet Olympics with daring feats of toilet roll acrobatics. Elmet and Fairfax
explored their creative side, with replica constructions of toilet blocks and cute toilet roll creatures.
Pupils across the school got involved and the Houses each chose the location of their twinned toilets in Uganda, Bangladesh, the Ivory Coast and
the Philippines. The superb fundraising also meant that we could sponsor a whole toilet block in Pakistan too, providing a vital facility in a school
desperate for adequate and clean sanitation.
A huge well done to everyone for the amazing £677.77 that was raised.
Mrs Hebden.

Spelling Bee Regional Final
Hugo, Charlotte and Emily took part in the Spelling Bee Regional Final.
After Round One, Charlotte (representing Spanish) and Emily (representing German) won a place amongst the top four spellers in the
Region. In Round 2 Charlotte was placed second overall and Emily in fourth place. Both have therefore qualified to go to the Final in
Cambridge on Friday 1 July.
Three of them reached the Regional (Yorkshire and Humber) Final. What an achievement. They will be awarded their Stage 2 Certificates
in the final assembly.
Petersport
Please see below all details for Petersport week which takes place in the summer holiday.
Elliott’s Mini Triathlon
So far there has been a fantastic response to Elliott undertaking his
'Mini Triathlon'.
Elliott’s parents would like to thank everyone who has sponsored him
so far. In his first week Elliott has completed 0.5km of walking, 1.0km
of rowing and nearly 2.3km of cycling, as part of his regular physiotherapy routine.
His original aim was to achieve 3km in each, but as he is getting
stronger each day he thinks he can increase this to 5km!

children to improve skills and help them gain in confidence and enjoy themselves throughout Petersport Plus. They
may be supplemented with student sports coaches. All staff have undergone the legally required checks.

Safety is a main consideration in any activities involving children and our coaches are eminently well qualified in
working with young children. In the event of sickness or accident a child’s parent/guardian will be informed
immediately.

opt for activities for which they are not properly dressed. St Peter’s School, the site for all activities, has comfortable
and adequate changing facilities. Equipment may be borrowed but children may bring their own named equipment if
they so wish. No kit may be left on the premises overnight.
FOOD & DRINK
Each child will be provided with a lunch each day and the cost of this is included in the course fee. Cold drinks and
snacks are provided at morning and afternoon breaks. On the final day a barbecue will be held at lunch time weather
permitting. St Olave’s is a nut free environment.

Olave’s. Children are asked to assemble in the Shepherd Hall by 9.15 a.m. each day and are supervised whilst awaiting
collection between 3.30 – 4.00 p.m. Children must sign out before they leave the campus at the end of the
day. Children are not allowed to leave the premises during the lunch break or at any other time without permission
of parents and staff.
